Description

G. KROTO Nov. 13, 1934.
TONGS Filed Dec. 26, 1933 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 flea rye [from I nvcnior 9 By Wm fltlomcy Patented Nov. 13, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1Claim.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in implements particularly adapted for household and industrial use.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide an implement in the form of tongs which can be conveniently employed for handling wet dishes and various other articles submerged in hot or other injurious liquids not desirable to touch with the bare hands, or articles which may be damaged by unprotected jaws.
During the course of the following specification and claim, other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader.
In the drawings:-
Figure 1 represents a side elevational view of the no-.'el implement.
Figure 2 represents an edge eievational view of the novel implement.
Figure 3 represents a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 represents a cross sectional view taken substantially on line 4- of Figure 2.
Figure 5 represents a cross sectional view taken as substantially on line 55 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 represents a fragmentary face elevational view of one of the jaws, with the resilient sleeve removed.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that numerais 55 represent longitudinally curved handles which are provided with oppositely curved extensions 6. One of these handles is provided with an opening 7 through which the other handie extends, the handle having the opening therein being substantially bulged, as at 8. (See Figure 1.)
A pin 9 extends through the flanged portions 1; of the handles 55 and thus pivotally connects tions being in opposed relation so that a relativethe handles together. The extensions 6-8 are likewise provided with flanges b, while these extensions 6-6 are provided with relatively wide jaw members c, each of which is provided along each longitudinal edge portion with a pair of ears ee. A rubber or other resilient sleeve 10 is stretched over each of the jaws and assumes a position on the jaw, shown clearly in Figures 1 and 2. A wire spring 11 is curved around the pin 9 and its leg portions bear against the handles 5 so as to normally spread the handles and likewise maintain the Jaws spaced apart.
Obviously, the resilient sleeve will prevent marring or damage to anything handled by the tongs and it is, obviously, convenient to replace these resilient sleeves when they become worn.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
An implement of the character described comprising a pair of pivotally connected handles each of channeled sheet metal construction, each of said handles being provided with flattened out portions at. a pair of their adjacent ends to provide jaw portions, each of the said jaw portions being provided with an enlargement at each end thereof, and a resilient sleeve adapted to be stretched over each of the jaw portions so as to seat between the enlargements, said flat jaw porly broad gripping surface isavailable when the implement is in use.
