Furthermore when materials are thus packed in fiat condition, the containers are often so handled as to place the material on edge which often results in ,movement and wrinkling of the material in the container. In addition to the wrinkling, the shifting of the fabric against the container walls ,often times causes injury to the texture of the material. The goods when offered for sale often appear wrinkled, mussed and unattractive.

An object of my invention is to provide a method of packaging sheet material in a neat, effective and efficient manner so that when the material is removed therefrom, it is fresh and uncreased, unwrinkled and uninjured.

Another object of my invention is to provide a container adapted to effectively package sheet material, which is so constructed that shifting of the. material in' the container is prevented, and which will generally preserve the material 1 against creasing, wrinkling and injury.

Another object of my invention is to provide a container for packaging sheet material in roll form which is easily and quickly assembled either by hand or machinery, which is strong and dura- 3'5 ble in construction and attractive and pleasing in appearance.

Although the novel features which are believed to be characteristic of this invention will be particularly pointed out in the claims appended 40 hereto, the invention itself, as to its objects and advantages, and the manner in which it may he carried out, may be better understood by referring to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, in which:

"My container is preferably made of strong cardboard material and may be shaped so as to most efiiciently accommodate the sheet ma terial to be packed therein. I have shown in Fig. 1, an elongated container of octagonal form.

portion 14 of the cover. A plurality of side wall extensions 15 and 16 project outwardly from the scored lines 13 to form the side walls of the cover portion. The side wall extensions 15 are provided 5 with tabs 17 extending laterally from each side of the side wall extension and separated therefrom by scored lines 18. The side wall extensions 16 are without side tabs as will be noted by reference to Fig. 3. The side tabs 17 may be out to any 1 shape desired from the material provided between adjacent side extensions 15 and 16. Each of said side extensionsl5 and 16 is provided with an end flap 19 separated from the extension by a score line 20.

The method of assembling my cover shown in Fig. 3 will now bedescribed. The side extensions 15 and 16 are raised upwardly so that they extend substantially at right angles to the bottom portion 14 of the cover, bending at the creased line the side extensions 15 and 16. The side extensions. W

15 and 16 forming the side walls of the cover are thus maintained in permanent upright position.

I have shown in Figs. 6 and '7 a modified cover ,constructicn. R ferrin more par i larly t Fig- 7, a band of paper board material is provided which has vertical spaced score lines 21 to define the vertical side portions 22 of the cover. The band may be made continuous by securing the ends thereof together with an adhesive strip, not shown, or other means. A tab 23 is formed integral with each side wall portion 22, but is separated therefrom by a score line 24. Each tab. is bent to extend inwardly as shown in Fig. 7 and may be" out out at the corners so as not to interfere with adjacent tabs when in inwardly bent position. The continuous band forming the side portions 22 is placed upon a heavy cardboard blank 25 cut to conform to" the'shape of the side wall portions 22. A sheet of strong and tough paper rnateri al"26 is glued over the exterior of the card.- board portion 25 and is provided with tab portions 27 which extend upwardly. Tab portions 27 are adhesively secured to the side wall portions '22, as clearly shown in Fig. "I. A strip '28 ofsheet paper material is then adhesively secured around the outside of the side wall portions 22, covering the full height thereof. The upper portion 29 of the strip is folded over the horizontal edge of the sidewall portions 22 and adhesively secured 'to the inside face thereof." To hold the cover completelyassembled and'give it strength, an inner disc '30 of strong and tough paper material, slightly oversize, is pressed into the cover ands'eats on the inwardly projecting tab portions 23. In any event the sheet material when so handled is not creased or pressed in any manner. The roll of material is then inserted endwise into the tubular barrel of the container. One of the. cover portions may, or may not, be placed upon the end df the tubular. barrel before the roll ofmaterial is inserted. If. it is desiredto fix thecover permanentlyto the barrel after the roll of material has been inserted, it is merely necessary tov place a a small amount of. glue or other adhesive materialion the inside face of the cover and then telescope the cover over the end of the barrel.

As shown in Fig. 1, I may cut an opening 31 in one wall of the barrel portion 10, which serves as a display window, making visible the goods within, without requiring the removal of the goods from the container. A stiff strip of cardboard or other opaque material 32 may be inserted between the goods A and the interior face of the windowed side I all to cover the window and protect the contents during storage and shipping. 2. A bedspread package, comprising a rolled bedspread enclosed in a container having a body portion of relatively stifi paperboard material in the form of a regular polygonal prism, the outer ply of the bedspread roll being in pressure engaging relation with substantially the entire surface of the inner portion of each face of the prism, whereby relative movement of the roll with respect to the container is prevented, a removable cover member for each end of the body comprising a polygonal shaped bottom portion having a side wall extension projecting radially of the bottom from each edge thereof, means associated with the side wall extensions for maintaining them in the erect position, an unobstructed opening in one of the faces of the prism forming a window in the body of the container through which the contents may be viewed, and an opaque removable shutter for said opening, the shutter being insertable through either end of the container body and held in position by the roll.
