To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NATHANIEL WATER- BURY, of Baltimore, in thecounty of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scoops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description. thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which-- 7 Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved scoop. Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detached plan view of the same.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters.

This invention relates to improvements in scoops; and consists of the construction and combination of the parts, as clearly pointed out in the claims.

In the annexed drawings, A refers to the blade of the scoop, constructed from three or more layers of veneer, a a a laid one upon the other and glued, or otherwise suitably united together, after having been bent or pressed into the desired shape. The said layers are brought together so that the grain of the intermediate or middle layer will cross that of the other layers.

From this construction and disposition of parts, it will be observed that strength, durability, and cheapness are obtained, and a scoop produced serving equally as well as the metallic scoops.

B is the head or end, to which the blade A is fastened in any known way. This head or end is undercut, forming a shoulder or flange, b, which is preferably beveled inwardly upon its front surface to bind or secure the inner end of the blade A, abutting against it, firmly in place, and is preferable to a groove, into which the blade is made to fit, since the nice fitting of the parts to each other is thereby avoided, besides the loss which is caused by the frequent destruction of the heads.

Upon the inner side of the head or end B, and extending around its curvature, is a tapering wooden flange, I), having its grain running in the direction of its length, and

which, it will be observed, slants off flush with the bottom and sides of the blade A, to prevent the wedging of its contents in between the said blade and head, to permit of the expeditious removal of adhering particles therefrom, and to strengthen the parts by crossing the grain of the wood, and thereby diminish the weight of the head.

G is a handle, having a screw, c, for its attachment to the scoop-head B. d is a pin insorted and driven down through the head B onto the screw 0 of the handle 0, the screw being provided with an aperture for its reception, to prevent the handle becoming unscrewed or detached from the said head.

The scoop is dipped into orsaturated with paraffine, in order to resist the action of acids.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.-

1. In a scoop, the head or end B, having an undercut shoulder or flange, 11, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The blade A, in combination with the head B, having an undercut shoulder, I), substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The wooden head B, having the curved tapering wooden flange b, with the grain crossing each other, as described, in combination with the blade A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. The head B, having an undercut shoulder, b, in combination with a threefold veneer plate, A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

. 5. As a new article of manufacture, a grocers scoop conissting of the head B, having the undercut or beveled flange b and the interiorly-concaved projection b, the threefold veneer plate A, and the whole saturated with paraffine, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

6. As a new article of manufacture, a grothe undercut or' beveled flange b and the interiorly-concaved projection 12, and the threefold veneer plate A, as set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
