Description
Oct. 23, 1934. w. WENIGER TYPEWRITER ATTACHMENT Filed July 14, 1932 \nventor: W'xHibald Wen'xger",
W 5 M 1 b5 V HIS Attorrweg Patented Oct. 23, 1934 PATENT OFFICE 1,978,068 TYPEWRITER ATTACHMENT Willibald Weniger, Corvallis, Oreg.
Application J ly 14, 1932, Serial No. 622,415 '1 Claims. (01. 191-180) UNITED STATES My invention relates to typewriters and has for an object the provision of a simple and reliable means whereby more and different characters than those controlled-by the typewriter keys are made available.
- In scientific work characters other than those found on'the standard keyboard are nearly always used. For example, letters of the Greek alphabet and mathematical symbols are essential for the writing of formulae and equations. I-Ieretofore special typewriters have been supplied for such special uses but their field of usefulness is limited. v Furthermore skilled typists use the touch method of operating the standard keyboard and as a rule refuse to use a special machine.
In carrying out my in ,ention in one form thereof, I provide a support which is secured to the typewriter in such a manner that auxiliary type bars may be placed on the support in operative relation with respect to the platen of the typewriter. a projection by meansof which the bar may be driven against the platen by oneof the regular .type bars.
For a more complete understandingof my invention reference should now be had to the drawing in which Figure 1 is .an enlarged perspective view of my invention as applied to a typewriter; Figure-Zis a front elevation of Figure, 1, while Figure 3 shows a side elevation of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawing, I have shown my invention in one form as applied to a typewriter of which a type guidelo is shown secured to the typewriter frame 11. A support 12 for an auxiliary type bar, for example the bar 13, is mounted from the ends 14 and 15 of the type guide 10. As shown, the support 12 is slotted as indicated by the reference numeral 1'7 so that the type guide ends 14 and 15 cooperate in securing the support in the position shown. The auxiliary bar 13 is rigidly secured at its upper end to a rod 19. This rod 19, nesting in the grooves 20 of the support 12, serves to suspend the bar 13 for movement against the ribbon 22 and the. platen 23. It will be understood that there are provided as many auxiliary type bars as may be desired and at the lower end of each bar there are provided special reference characters, as indicated at 24. A projection 26 is formed on the opposite side of the type bar 13 and is of such a dimension and is so placed that when the bar 13 is actuated by any type bar of the typewriter, for example the Each auxiliary type bar is provided with of the type bars on the typewriter. For example, on the standard keyboard any type bar may be ,used to actuate the auxiliary bar except the one having the underscore. If the underscore type bar is used the underscore would. strike the projection to the damage of the underscore type.
In applying my invention to a typewriter, the support 12 is attached to the typewriter by means of the slots which engage the ends 14 and 15 of the type guide. The typewriter is then used in theordinary way until a special character is desired.- The proper bar, for example 13, is then selected and placed in position on the bearings 20 of the support. Any key (except the underscore) is depressed in the ordinary manner causing its type bar to strike the projection 26. The auxiliary type bar 13 is thereby caused to strike the ribbon 22'and the platen 23 and thus print ona piece of paper in contact with platen 23 the particular character needed.
It will be observed that each auxiliary type bar, as illustrated by the bar 13, is provided with two special characters and a particular one is selected by the operation of the shift key in the usualmanner. The special characters strike the platen with sufficient force so that carbon copies and stencils are easily made; As soon as the special character, or characters, have been printed the auxiliary key is'removed from the support 12 and in the art that the type of support for the auxiliary bars may-be radically altered for easy mounting on commercial typewriters, while changes may be made in details, dimensions and arrangements and certain features used without other features without departing from the spirit of this invention. Reference is, therefore, to be had to the claims hereto appended for a definition of the limits of saidinvention.
' What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. An attachment by means of which additional characters are made available on a typewriter. comprising, an auxiliary type bar, and removable mounting means for mounting said auxiliary bar in such manner that it can be 01)- erated by any selected one of the type bars on the typewriter into engagement with the platen of said typewriter while preventing the engagement of said selected type bar with said platen.
2. An attachment for typewriters of the type having outwardly extending projections on the type guide, combining supporting means having slotted ends for engagement with said projections, an auxiliary type bar, and means on said supporting means for pivotally mounting said type bar in printing position between said projections of said type guide.
3. An attachment for a typewriter provided with a platen, type bars, means for operating said type bars, and a type guide, comprising a supporting member, means for mounting said member from said type guide, and an auxiliary type bar provided with reference characters on one face and a projection on the opposite face, said supporting membenproviding a pivotal support for suspending from a point above said type guide said auxiliary type bar with said reference characters between said type guide, said projection serving to receive a character imprinting blow from one of said type bars.
4. An attachment'for a typewriter having a type guide, a platen, and type bars, comprising an auxiliary type bar provided with reference characters on one face thereof and a projection on the opposite face thereof, a support provided with grooves located above said type guide, a pin secured to'said type bar in spaced relation with said reference characters and arranged to rest within said grooves for pivotally mounting from a point above said type guide said auxiliary bar so that said projection receives an imprinting blow from one of the typewriter type bars to actuate said auxiliary bar into engagement with said platen.
5. An attachment for typewriters of the type having outwardly extending projections on the platen. 4
type guide, comprising supporting means having slotted ends for engagement with said projections, an auxiliary type bar provided with reference characters on one face and an operating projection on the opposite face, and means on said supporting means for pivotally mounting said type bar in printing position between said projections of said type guide, said operating projection of said type bar serving to receive an imprinting blow from one of the type bars of said typewriter. 6. An attachment for typewriters of the type having outwardly extending projections on the type guide, comprising a supporting member having slotted ends for engagement with said projections, an auxiliary type bar provided with reference characters on one face and an operating projection on the opposite face, said supporting means being provided with supporting grooves for pivotally mounting said type bar in operating position between said projections of said type guide so that any one of the type bars of said typewriter can be operated into engagement with said operating projection to actuate said auxiliary bar into printing engagement with said '7. An attachment by means of which additional characters are made available on a typewriter provided with a platen and type bars having reference characters thereon, comprising, an auxiliary type bar provided with reference characters on one face thereof and a projection on the opposite face thereof, removable mounting means for mounting said auxiliary type bar in such manner that it can be operated by any one of the type bars on the typewriter into engagement with the platen of said typewriter, said projection being positioned' so that it is engaged by the selected one of said typewriter type bars intermediate the reference characters on said typewriter type bars.
