This invention relates to a kit containing the various articles necessary for use in polishing shoes or the like, and to the various component parts thereof.

It is a further object to provide a container which is of convenient shape and size to be leasily carried and yet which may be fully opened up to form a container from which each article may be separately removed at will.

Yet another object is the formation of a polishing pad in such a manner that it is convenient for use and so that it will receive and interengage with the other parts of the kit.

One other object of this invention is to a dauber or applicator having provision provide 'for the concealment and protection of the applicator 0 proper, and being so formed asto inter fit with the polisher .in the manner hereinbefore set forth.

In accordance with this invention, there is provided a polisher consisting of a base member 1-, a cushion 2, a body of polishing material 3, and a handle 4. The base 1 is provided with upcurled side edges 5 terminating with a downward disposition as at 6, and with reversely bent ends -7. The pad 2 is secured to the base 1 by means of cords 8 or the like which are passed through the pad 2 and through openings provided therefor` in the base, and which are knotted together at 9.

Passing around the pad 2 in a longitudinal direction is a iiexible web member 10 to which is attached the polishing body 3. The ends of this flexible web memberl 10 are each provided with a U-shaped reinforcing bar 11 for a purpose which will presently beset forth. The handle 4 is formed or" a single piece of sheet metal or other suitable material which is bent to form along the sides of the handle member a pair of oppositely disposed substantially cylindrical concavities 12 and 13 respectively, and has its lower terminal edges extending in opposite directions and disposed between the downwardly directed terminal edge portions 6 and the base member. The member forming the handle is also bent at 14 and 15 so as to provide the upper slightly concaved portion 16 `of the handle. It is to be noted particularly by reference to Figures 2 and 4 that the resulting handle provides two very distinctly defined concave portions or cavities in the opposite sides of, the handle in that portion which is adapted to be gripped by the hand.

For the purpose of securing the reinforced end of the exible web member 10 and the oppositely disposed edges 17 of the handle to the base member, there are-provided a plurality of bolts 19 which are provided with nuts' 20. The handle member is formed with slots 21 for the purposeof receiving Vthese bolts and for allowing the handle member tobe properly centered upon the base. Y

The dauber constructed in accordance with this invention consists of the base 22 having a reducedstem portion 23 and having a brush portion 24 secured thereto on the 'opposite side from the stem portion 23. To the end of the stem portion 23 there is secured by means of the. screw 25 `having a head 26 the end 27 of a cup member having cylindricalside VwallsA 28I and forming a part of'thec'asing' for the brush. 119

This cup member is of slightly larger diameter than the base 22 and is of such size as to fit readily within one of thek cylindrical concavities in the sides of the handle member of the polisher. Surrounding the base 22 and telescopingly engaged within the side Walls 28 of` said cup is a casing 23 which is adapted to slide into and out of the cup. Within this casing 29 there is provided a guide member 30 which closely engages the stem portion 23 of the base member so as to guide the casing in its reciprocatoryv motion upon said stem. The casing 29 is of such extent that when moved to one eXtreme position it will completedly surround the brush portionY 24 and serve to protect the same. When moved to its other eXtreme position it willcompletely expose the brush portion 24 so that it may be used. Disposed between the guide member 30 and the end 27 of the cup there is provided a j spring 3l which is adapted at all times to urge the guide 3C!A downwardly as illustrated in Figures 5 and 6 so that the casing will completely surround the brush 24 as illustrated in Figure 5. When in this position, there is provided a cap member 32 for closing the end of the casing 29 and for completely concealing the brush 24. This cap 32 is provided with a flange 33 which threadedly engages the threaded end 34 of the casing 29.

Adjacent the inner end of the cup, its side wall is provided with a plurality of pins.35 which project inwardly therefrom. The upper end of the easing 29 is formed with a corresponding number of bayonet slots 36 adapted to receive the pins when the casing 29 isV moved against the tension of the spring 31, and hold the casing 2 9 in its uppermost position with the brush exposed during the time that the brush is in use. It will readily be seen that it is a very simple operation to remove the cap 32 from the casing 29, to push the casing upwardly against the tension of the spring 31, and to engage the pins 35 in the bayonet slots 36 so as to hold the casing in this position. When iin- 'ished using the dauber, itis merely necessary to give the casing a slight twist and it will be forced by the spring 31 into the position illustrated in Figure 5 after Which the cap 32 may be placed in position thereon.

As liasgbeen noted above, both sides of the handle 4 of the polisher are provided with substantially cylindrical'concavities. Into one of these is fitted the dauber which has just been set forth, and into the other there is fitted a tube 37 adapted to be rolled up `from one end 38 and provided at its opposite end with a suitable closure 39 and which is adapted to contain the polishing material. With the dauber disposed in the concavity in one side of the handle 4 of the polisher, and with the tube 37 disposed in the ccncavity in the other side of the handle 4, it will be seen that the entire set is formed into a compact and convenient bundle..y

For the purpose vof holding the component parts just described in their proper position and of protecting them from contact with clothing or the like, there is provided a container which will now be set forth. This container consists in'general of an elongated flat substantially rigid base member 40 and of a pair of oppositely disposed side, end and top members 41 which are hinged to the opposite edges of the base. IThe opposite ends of the base are turned upwardlyv as at 42so as to lfornil an upwardly extending f wallwhich is equal to substantially half of the width of the base member. There is thus formed a channel-shaped member which is of such width and length as to receive and be covered by the polislier previously described. To the opposite side edges of this base member 40 there are hinged at 43 and 44 respectively the members 41. These members 41 consist of side wall portions or sides 45, end Wall portions 46, and top Wall portions 47. The side wall portions 45 are preferably joined to the top wall portions 47 ,by means of an inclined corner part 48 which forms a beveled corner upon the container as will 'be presently apparent. The end wall portions 46, are so disposed with respect to the upper end portion 42 on the base that when the side wall portions 45 are hinged upwardly totheir upright position, these end wall portions 46 "will overlap the lupstanding part 42 and dispose themselves adjacent the outer face of said upstanding part. The end Wall portions 46 and the top wall portions 47 are integrally joined together, and are, Aprovided adjacent their free edges with an outwardly extending beaded edge portion 49. When the side walls are hinged about the hinges 43 and 44 to occupy an upright position, it will be seen that the beaded edges 49 will come in Contact with each other so as to form a completely closed container. When in this position, a movable latch member 50 having an enlargement 51 on the end thereof may be engaged with a yoke member 52 to hold the oppositely hinged sections in their closed position in contact With each other.

, It Will be appreciated that when the container is closed in the manner just set forth with the various component parts. of the kit in their interengaged relation with' each other disposed within the container, the side walls of the container will serve to retain the dauber and the polish container within the cylindrical conoavities in the opposite sides of the handle and the polisher, and the whole will form a very compact and neat kit containing all of the necessary articles for polishing shoes or the like.' On the other hand, when the container is opened up, there are provided three separate places where the three articles may be separately disposed so that either may be picked up at will. The upstanding end portions 42 of the base 40 being of substantially half the width of the base are of approximately the same height as the end wall portions 46 when in open position. Thus, the entire container when open forms a shallow retaining member which will not permit any of the various parts of the kit to roll off or to become otherwise displaced therefrom.

From the above it Will be apparent that a means has been provided for carrying out all of the objects and; advantages of thisinvention and that one embodiment thereof has been set forth by way of illustration. It is to be understood, however, that the same is not to be construed 1 as in any way limiting this invention except according to theterms of the appended claims.

What I claiml ist- 1. In a polishing kit, a case member having upstanding ends, an elongated at base portion portion, a handle member disposed longitudinally of and integrally joined to the upper surface of the polishing pad and extending upwardly therefrom substantially to the top of said case When closed, said handle member having its opposite sides formed with longitudinal, substantially cylindrical ooncavities, a substantially cylindrical dauber of a size to iit Within one of said concavities and be held therein by the adjacent side member of the oase when in closed position, a substantially cylindrical, polish container of a size to t Within the other of said concavities and be held therein by the other side member of the case when it is in closed position, and means for securing said side members in upright position.

2. In a polishing kit, a case member having a flat base portion and end, side and top portions secured thereto, a polishing` pad of a size to fit against and substantially cover said base portion, a handle member extending longitudinally of and integrally joined to the upper surface of the polishing pad and extending upwardly therefrom substantially to the top of said case when L closed, said handle member having its opposite sides formed With longitudinal, substantially cylindrical conoavities, a substantially cylindrical dauber of a size to t Within one of said concavities and be held therein by the adjacent side member of the case, and a substantially cylindrical polish container of a size to fit Within the other of said ooncavities and be held therein by the other side member of the oase.

3. In a polishing kit, a case member having a fiat base portion and end, side, and top portions secured thereto, a polishing pad of a size to fit against and substantially cover said base portion, a handle member secured to the upper surface of the polishing pad and extending upwardly therefrom, said handle member having concavities in its opposite sides, a dauber of a size and shape to t within one of said concavities and be held therein by the adjacent side member of the case, and a polish container of a size and shape to fit Within the other of said concavities andv be held therein by the other side member of the case.

4. In a polishing kit, a polishing padV having a soft polishing surface, a handle member secured to said polishing pad on the side opposite said soft polishing surface, said handle member having ooncavities in its opposite sides, a dauber of a size and shape to lit Within one of said concavities, a polish container of a size and shape to fit Within the other of said concavities, and means adapted to t around said polishing pad, dauber, and polish container to hold said dauber and polish container in position within said concavities.
