Description
CONTAINER Filed June 1'7, 1953 EN OR H RNHN w BL O CK,
BY f g i5 ATTORNEY Patented Dot. 2, 1934 PATENT oFFiee entree srerss This invention relates to containers, and is particularly directed to boxes for cards bearing sample swatches or cloth, and the like articles.
An object of this invention is to provide a box of the character described, having compartments at the opposite ends thereof, which may be selectively opened, said box being constructed to permit articles within said compartments to be viewed from above and removed from the ends of the box.
A further object of this invention is to provide a strong and compact box of the character described, which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to open and close and yet practical and efficient to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement or" parts which will be exemplilied in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope or" application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a box embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a View similar to Fig. 1 but with one compartment partially open;
Fig. 3 is a partial, cross-sectional View taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of my improved box with both compartments partially open, and parts broken away to show the interior construction; and
Fig. 5 is a side elevational view of my improved box with one compartment open and showing cards within the compartments of said 40 box. 7
Referring now in detail to the drawing, 10 designates a box or container embodying the invention, here shown to comprise a bottom wall 11 of rectangular shape from the sides of which there extend upwardly a pair of similar, parallel, rectangular side walls 12 and 13. Interconnecting said side walls 12 and 13 and contacting the upper surface of said bottom wall 11, is an upa standing transverse partition 15, preferably of the same height as said'side walls. Hinged to the ends of said bottom wall 11, as at 17, are a pair of similar end walls 18, adapted to be swung to vertical position to close the ends of the box. When the end walls are in vertical position the end portions 19 thereof preferably contact the end edges 20 and 21 of the side walls 12'and 13, respectively.
The walls 11, 12, 15 and 18 of the box may be constructed of cardboard, paper board, wood or any other suitable stiff material, and are preferably covered with canvas or the like flexible sheet material on one or both sides thereof. The flexible covering preferably interconnects the end walls 18 to the bottom'wall 11, thus providing the hinge connections 1'7 for said end walls.
The box 10 is thus divided by partition 15 into two compartments. partments of said box there is provided a cover member 23 comprising a pair of similar, symmetrically disposed cover portions 24 and a narrow central strip 25 overlying the upper edge 25a of partition 15.
Each of the cover portions 24 covers one of the compartments and comprises a top wall 26 from the sides of which there extend a pair of parallel, similar side walls 28 adapted to receive the upper edge portions or" side walls 12 and 13 therebetween. Interconnecting the side walls 28 of each cover portion 24 and extending from the outer end of top wall 26 of said cover portion is' an end wall 29 adapted to receive the upper edge portion of the hinged end wall 18 for retaining the same in vertical position.
The walls of said cover 23 and said central strip 25 may likewise be made of cardboard, paper board, wood or the like stifi material covered on one or both sides thereof, by canvas or other suitable flexible material. The flexible covering preferably interconnects said walls 26 with the central strip 25, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
The strip 25 is disposed between the inner ends of top walls 26 and is provided with portions 32 contacting portions of the outer surfaces of side walls 12 and 13, and disposed between the inner ends of side walls 28 of the cover. Nails 33, or the like fastening devices, driven through said strip 25 and its end portions 32 and side walls 12 and 13 and piercing the top and side end edges of the partition 15, serve to firmly attach the cover to the central portion of said box. The cover portions 24 are thus hinged, as at 27, on opposite sides of said central strip, each cover portion thus being provided with a separate hinge.
It will now be understood that each cover portion 24 may be swung into position overlying and resting on the other cover portion, as illustrated in Fig. 5. When one cover portion is swung open, the adjacent end wall swings down to lie on the table or surface supporting the box. In such For covering the con:
position, a stack of cards 35, for example, bearing sample swatches of cloth, or the like articles, within the open compartment, may be viewed from above, and the top cards may be slipped out successively from the open end of the dorm pertinent, the box thus serving as a display device. 7
Althoughil ig. 5 of the drawing illustrates the box as a container or display device for cards bearing cloth swatches,- said box may obviously be used as a receptacle for various other articles. The canvas or other flexible inges for the end walls 18 and cover portions 24 may also be replaced by other suitable hinges, such as ordinary metal hinges. Instead of covering the walls of the box entirely with canvas or the like flexible material, strips of such material may be used to connect the end Walls 18 to-the bottom wall 11, and to connect walls 26 to the central strip.
After the cards of one compartment are displayed and removed, the same may be replaced, the end wall 18 for said compartment swung upwardly the open cover portion 24 swung into closed position, thereby retaining said end wall in vertical position to close said compartment. The other cover portion 24 may 't 1611' be swung open to overlie the closed cover portion, thus permitting the other end wall 18 to fall to horizontal position and expose the articles in the othe compartment.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters'Patent: l.
