This invention relates to liquid dispensing apparatus and more particularly to that type f gasoline dispensing pump, commonly known as a meter pump, in which the gasoline is delivered from an underground storage tank to a ilexible delivery hose through a meter which measures the quantity of gasoline delivered. A dispensing apparatus of this kind may employ various means for delivering the gasoline from the storage tank to the hose. In one form of apparatus a motor driven pump is employed for this purpose and in another form the gasoline in the tank is subjected to uid pressure which forces it through a discharge pipe to the hose. The means for delivering the liquid from the tank to the hose is controlled in different ways, as by a switch controlling the operation of the ptunp motor or by a valve to control the delivery from the pressure tank. Such a valve may be either a cut-off valve in the discharge pipe or a relief valve to relieve the pressure in the storage tank. The delivery hose is usually provided with a valved nozzle so that the delivery of the gasoline may be controlled at the nozzle but it is desirable, and in many places the authorities require, that the delivery mechanismshall be rendered inoperative upon the completion of each delivery of gasoline, so that the fluid remaining in the hose line will not be subjected to pressure. In practice it is found that the operator upon the completion of a delivery will hang his hose upon the supporting device or hook provided for that purpose but will neglect to operate the controlling device for the delivery mechanism, thus permitting the pump to continue to operate or leaving the hose under fluid tank pressure, as the case may be. It has been proposed to automatically operate the controllingl device by connecting the same with a movable hose supporting device or hook so arranged that when subjected to the Weight of the hose it willV operate the controlling device to interrupt the delivery of gasoline to the hose. Such devices are open to various objections and do not provide for the full manual operation of the controlling device.
One object of the present invention is to provide means separate from the hose supporting device for controlling the operation of the delivery mechanism and of such a character that when moved to a position to render the delivery mechanism operative it will positively prevent the hose from being hung upon the hose supporting device.
A further. object of the invention is to provide such a device which will be simple in its construction and operation and which can be quickly and easily installed upon the existing pumps.

In the drawing we have illustrated one embodiment of our invention and have shown the same as applied to a meter pump of that type employing a motor operated pump and utilizing a switch to control the delivery of liquid to the hose. It will be understood, however, that this particular embodiment has been chosen for the purpose of illustration only and that the invention may take various forms and may be applied to dispensing apparatus employing a valve or other means for controlling the delivery of the liquid. The term hose as herein used is intended to include any conduit through which the liquid may be delivered and having a flexible portion which may be hung up when not in use.
The apparatus here illustrated comprises a housing 5 within which is mounted a pump 6 85 driven by an electric motor 7 which in turn is controlled by a switch 8, The intake side of the pump is connected by a pipe 9 with an underground storage reservoir l0. The outlet side of the pump is connected by a pipe 11 with a meter 90 12 which in turn is connected by a pipe 13 with a flexible hose 14 having at one end a nozzle 15. The nozzle is provided with a valve 16 which is operated by a handle or lever 17 pivotally mounted on the nozzle, and a guard 18 extends about 95 the handle on that side opposite the body of the nozzle. Mounted on a suitable part of the apparatus is a hose supporting device or hook, here shown as a ilat bar 19 rigidly supported at its inner end on the pipe 13 and extending through a 100 slot 20 in the housing 5 to a point some distance beyond that housing. The guard 18 of the nozzle is provided with a. slot 2l to receive the supporting device 19, the slot being just large enough to permit the guard to be easily placed upon and removed from the supporting device. The housing 5 is provided with an opening 22, above the hose supporting device, adapted to receive the end of the nozzle when the guard is placed upon the hose supporting device. Y In the present instance the valve operating handle or valve 17 is also slotted to receive the supporting device, as shown in Fig. 2. When the apparatus is to be locked up for the night the hasp of a padlock 23 is inserted through an opening'in the supporting device 19, thus retaining the nozzle thereon and also preventing the operating of the valve handle 17. In practice the operator will not always take time to insert the nozzle in the opening 22 and place the guard on the supporting device 19,

This member is operatively-connected with the motor switch in such a manner that when it is in its interfering position the switch will be closed but when moved out4 of its interfering position to permit the hose to be hung on the supporting device the switch will be j opened. The interfering member may take various forms but is here shown as an arm 24 having depending lugs 25 by means of which it is mounted on some part of the apparatus adjacent to the supporting apparatus. In the present instance, it is mounted uponl the inner end of the supporting device itself. The arm is preferably of a length approximately equal to the length of the supporting device and is so arranged that when moved downwardly about its pivotal support it` will assume a position above and lengthwise of the supporting device, thus effectively preventing the supporting device from entering the opening vin the nozzle guard. Having new fully described oury invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patenhis: Y
1. In a liquid dispensing apparatus comprising a casing, a delivery hose, a device within said carsing to control the delivery of liquid to said hose, and a device projecting laterally beyond said casing to support said hose when it is not in use, an arm pivotally mounted ne-ar the innerend of said supporting device for movement into and out of a position above and substantially parallel with that portion of said supporting device which extends beyond said casing and having its upper edge sloped downwardly toward the outer end of saidfsupporting device, and an operative connection between said arm and said controlling device.
2. In a liquid dispensing apparatus comprising ar delivery hose, a nozzle carried by said hose and having a part provided with a slot eX- tending lengthwise of said nozzle, a device to control the delivery ofeliquid to said hose, and a supporting device mounted on said apparatus and having-a substantially horizontal portion extendingv outwardly beyond said casing and adapted to enter the slot in said part of said nozzle and support said hose when the latter is not in use, a member mounted'for movement into and out of a position above said portion of said supportingV device to prevent said Vsupporting device from entering said slot, said member 'being so shaped and arranged as to prevent said hose being supported thereon in any manner, and an operative connection between said member. and said controlling device.
3. In a liquid dispensing apparatus comprising a pump, an electric motor to operate said pump,V

4. In a liquid dispensing apparatus comprising a pump, an electric motor to'operate said pump, a switch to control "said motor, a casing to enclose said pump, said motor and said switch, a hose connected with said pump, and a device extending laterally beyond said casing to support said hose .when it is not in use, a member pivotally mounted for movement into and out of a position in which it will extend above and lengthwise of that portion of said supporting device which extends beyond said casing and prevent said hose being supported on said supporting device, and means controlled by said pivoted member to maintain said switch open when said member is in a position to permit said hose to be supported on said supporting device.
5. In a liquid dispensing apparatus comprising a pump and an electric motor to operate said pump, a switch to control said motor, a casing to enclose said pump, said motor and said switch, a hose connected with said pump, and a device extending laterally beyond said casing to support said hose when it is not in use, a member mounted for movement into and out of a position in which it will extend above said supporting device and lengthwise thereof, said member having its upper portion sloped downwardly toward the outer end of said supporting device to prevent said hose being supported thereon, and an operative connection between said member and said switch.
6, In a liquid dispensing apparatus comprising a pump, an electric motor to operate said pump, a switch to control said motor, a hose connected with said pump, a nozzle carried by said hose and having a part extending lengthwise thereof and provided with an opening, a hose supporting arm extending laterally from said apparatus and adapted to enter said opening in said nozzle and thereby support said hose, a second arm pivotally mounted on an axis transverse to said hose supporting arm for movement into and out of a position adjacent to and lengthwise of said supporting arm to prevent the latter from entering the opening in said nozzle, and a connection between said second arm and said switch to cause said switch to be opened when said arm is moved out of said position.

In a liquid dispensing apparatus comprising a pump, an electric motor to operate said pump, a switch to control said motor, a hose connected with said pump, a nozzle carried by said hose and having a part extending lengthwise thereof and provided with an opening, a hose supporting arm extending laterally from said apparatus and adapted to enter said opening in said part of said nozzle and thereby support said hose, a second arm pivotally mounted for movement into and out of a position above said hose supporting arm to prevent the latter from entering the opening in said part of said nozzle, said second arm having its upper surf-ace sloped downwardly toward the outer end of said hose supporting arm to prevent the hose being supported thereon, a connection between said second arm and said switch to cause said switch to be opened when said second arm is moved out of said position.

In a liquid dispensing apparatus comprising a pump, an electric motor to operate said pump, a switch to control said motor, a hose connected with said pump, a nozzle carried by said hose and having a part extending lengthwise thereof and provided with an opening, a hose supporting arm extending laterally from said apparatus and adapted to enter said opening in said nozzle and thereby support said hose, a second arm pivotally mounted for movement into a position adjacent to said laterally extending hose supporting arm to prevent the latter entering said opening in said part of said nozzle or into a. position topermit said hose supporting arm to enter said opening, and means controlled by said second arm to cause said switch to be closed when said second arm is in the rst mentioned position and to be open when said second arm is in the last mentioned position, said second arm being so arranged that it will be retained in said last mentioned position by said nozzle so long as said nozzle is on said hose supporting arm.

In a liquid dispensing apparatus comprising a casing, a delivery hose, a device mounted in said casing to deliver liquid to said hose, and a device projecting laterally beyond said casing to support said hose when it is not in use, an interfering member mounted for movement into and out of a position in which it will extend lengthwise of and adjacent to that portion of said supporting device which extends beyond said casing, in which position it will prevent any part of said hose being supported on said supporting device, and means controlled by said interfering member to prevent the operation of said delivery device when said interfering member is in a position to permit the hose to be hung on said supporting device.
10. In a liquid dispensing apparatus comprising a casing, a delivery hose, a device mounted in said casing to deliver liquid to said hose, and a device projecting laterally beyond said casing to support said hose when it is not in use, an interfering member mounted for movement into and out of a position above and adjacent to said supporting device and having its upper edge sloped downwardly toward the outer end of said supporting device to prevent the hose being hung thereon, and means controlled by said interfering member to prevent the operation of said delivery device when said interfering member has been moved from its position above said supporting device.

In a liquid dispensing apparatus comprising a casing, a delivery hose, a device mounted within said casing to control the delivery of liquid to said hose, and a device projecting laterally beyond said casing to support said hose when it is not in use, an interfering member mounted for movement into and out of a position in which it will extend above and adjacent to said supporting device, said interfering member being of such shape that when it is in said adjacent position it will prevent said hose from being supported on said supporting device, and a connection between said movable member and said controlling device to cause said controlling device to be moved to a position to permit liquid to be delivered to said hose when said member is in said position adjacent to said supporting device.

In a liquid dispensing apparatus comprising a casing, a delivery hose arranged exteriorly of said casing, a device mounted within said casing to control the delivery of liquid to said hose, and a device extending laterally beyond said casfet' ing to support said hose when not in use, an actuating device for said controlling device Vhaving a part mounted for movement into a position in which it will project above that portion of said supporting device which extends beyond said cas ing and will prevent said hose from beingv supported on said supporting device, said part Vof said actuating device beingso shaped and arranged as to prevent any part of the hose from being supportedY thereon when it is in the aforesaid position. 1 3.
