1 Claim.
This invention relates to a gate structure which is especially adapted for use on farms, and it has more particular reference to a type of gate adapted to be controlled from a distance on either side of the gate by a simple pull of a lever cord.
Visualized from a slightly more specific viewpoint, it is to be pointed out that the assembly comprises a vertically swingable gate to extend across the roadway, said gate being mounted for swinging on a horizontal axis and controlled by springs and weights to render it easy to operate, there being a pair of operating levers extending at right angles to the gate on opposite sides of said gate, so as to permit one lever to be actuated when approaching the gate and the other lever to be'actuated when leaving the gate so as to permit it 'to be raised and lowered by a person riding in an automobile Without alighting.
Needless to say, I am aware of the fact that gate structures of this general style are not new and, therefore, the present invention has to do with a structurally refined and improved arrangement characterized by requisite simplicity and durability and capable of fulfilling the requirements of an assembly of this type in a highly practicable and satisfactory manner.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and drawings.
In the drawings:--
Figure 1 is an end View of the complete assembly, showing the gate closed and illustrating its relationship with respect to the oppositely extending operating levers and supporting means therefor.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the structure shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view showing the gate closed in full lines and lifted to open position in dotted lines.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of the pivoted or anchored end portion of one embodiment of gate.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a longitudinal reciprocatory type gate retaining latch.
Figure 6 is a detail sectional view on the plane of the line 66 of Figure 2.
Figure 7 is a detail sectional view of the gate post and latch keeper.
Figure 8 is a fragmentary detail elevational view of a lever supporting standard.
Attention is first invited to Figures 1 to 8 inclusive of the drawings. In Figure 3, the numeral 13 designates the gate. The frame of this may be of horizontally elongated type and of any suitable construction and appropriately covered with wire (not shown) or made in any suitable manner. The gate frame includes among other parts an upright 14 having a guide bracket 15, as shown in Figure 6, which bracket is adapted to slidably accommodate a reciprocatory latch rod 16. This latch rod is adapted for cooperation with a keeper 1'? on the gate post 18. The numeral 19 merely designates a stop collar and 20 an eye to which a return spring 21 is connected. The numeral 22 designates a pivotally mounted U-shaped adaptor or actuator element which is suspended on the frame bar 23 and connected with the latch rod by way of a pivoted link 24. The actuator 22 is con trolled through the instrumentality of a flexible cable or equivalent rod element 25 which may be conveniently differentiated as a connector. The gate is formed with a substantially triangular anchoring member at its pivoted end which embodies inclined bars 26 and a connecting bar 27 which may be described as a fulcrum, this being mounted for oscillation in bearing eyes 28 mounted in the concrete supporting or anchoring block 29.
The numeral 30 designates a return coiled spring and 31 a gate lifting spring which are both anchored on the block 29, the spring 31 being attached to the rear upright or member of the gate frame and the spring 30 to the lower member of the frame.
The rear upright of the gate frame is formed at its extreme upper end with a supplemental triangular frame 32 which constitutes a carrier for a counter-weight 33 held in desired adjusted position through the instrumentality of a set screw 34. This weight 33, together with the companion spring 31, constitutes the means for facilitating swinging the gate, as a unit, on a horizontal axis and through a vertical are from the full line position shown in Figure 3 to the dotted line position shown in the same figure against the tension of the spring 30 when the latch rod 16 is released, and the gate set into motion.
The latch rod 16 may be released from either side of the gate by way of the actuating levers.
is being entered on the side indicated by the arrow B in Figure 1. Thus these two levers 35 and 36 are disposed at right angles to the pivoted end portion of the gate. Each lever is supported on a vertical standard 37 formed at its upper end with a fork 38 in which the intermediate portion of the lever is pivotally mounted, as indicated at 39, the numeral 40 merely designating a stabilizing guide which Works back and forth through the fingers of the fork to aid in insuring rigid operation of the lever. The free end of the lever is provided with a pendent grasping or manipulating cord or equivalent element 41. i
It follows that by entering the roadway on the side A of the gate and catching hold of the depending cord 41 and pulling it down, the lever 35, which is connected at its inner end to the pull cord 25, serves to release the latch rod 16 from the keeper 1? and to start the gate to lift. When this is accomplished, the spring 31 comes into cable 25 to swing the gate to closed position, the
spring 30 facilitating the closing movement of the gate. As before indicated, it is intended that the gate be operated by a person driving a vehicle and approaching the gate from either side, this being accomplished without requiring said person to alight from the vehicle.
It is thought that the description taken in connection with the drawings will enable a clear understanding of the invention to be had. Therefore, a more lengthy description is thought unn ssary.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it is to be understood that minor changes coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to if desired.
I claim:
A gate structure of the class described comprising a supporting member, a pair of spaced eye members extending upwardly therefrom, a gate having a cross rod connected at its center to the lower rear corner of the gate, said rod passing through the eyes of said members, a spring having one end connected to the rear of the supporting member and its other end to the rear upright member of the gate, a second spring having one end connected to the front edge of the supporting member and its other end to the lower member of the gate, a substantially triangular-shaped part having one corner connected pivoted to a part of the gate, a link connecting an intermediate part of said limb with the latch bar, and means connected with the other limb of the Ushaped member for operating the same, and exerting a pull on the gate from remote points.
