SCIlaims.
This invention relates to a device intended for attachment to a package of cigarettes to protect the cigarettes and support and maintain the shape of the package. The invention also includes a cigarette lighter which is ignited by the opening movement of a cover member for the package and extinguished by a closing movement of said cover.
The object of the invention is to provide a combination device of this character which will fit on a standard paper-covered package of cigarettes and'which will serve to not only maintain the shape of the package and prevent the cigarettes therein from being crushed when the package is carried in the pocket, but which will also provide the convenience of an automatic lighting means which is ignited when the cover member of the device is slid open to permit the removal of a cigarette from the package. By a closing movement of the cover, the lighter is automatically extinguished. The operation of the lighter is thus automatically performed without requiring any additional effort on the part of the user.
These and other objects are attained by the structure hereinafter described and set forth in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a cigarette package with the com- 39 bined protecting frame and cigarette lighter attached thereto; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig.

plate; Fig. 5 is a plan view of the structure shown in Figs. 1 and 2, showing the cover plate in its open position; Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 66 of Fig. 2, looking'in the direction of is arrows; Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line 4w 7-7 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrows; Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the combined reinforcing frame and lighter, looking at the side thereof opposite to that shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 9 is a horizontal sectional view adjacent the top of the device showing the upper end of the fuel chamber.
In the drawing, 10 and 11 indicate the opposite side members or legs of the frame of the device, these sides being of sheet metal and of skeleton 59 form and adapted to be inserted between the outer wrapper 12 of a cigarette package and the inner wrapper 13 thereof. The side members or legs 16 and 11 are spaced the proper distance apart so that they embrace the package, and form part of a relatively rigid frame which reenforces the package and maintains the shape of it to prevent crushing of the cigarettes 14 contained within the package. At their upper ends, the sides 10 and 11 are united by an integral, fixed top plate 15 which is spaced from a lower similar fixed plate 16. Between the two plates 15 and 16 is a slid-' able cover plate 17 which is of greater length than the fixed plates 15 and 16, so that when in its closed position it completely covers the top of the package, as shown in Fig. 2 and conceals the cigarettes therein contained. The top plate 15 of the frame is provided with a longitudinal slot 18 within which a screw 19, secured to the sliding cover plate 16, projects and is movable. The screw 19 is preferably provided with a rounded head enabling it to be easily engaged by the finger to slide the cover 17 back and forth to either expose a number of the cigarettes 14 in the package to permit their successive removal therefrom, or else to completely close the top of the package. 1
At one of its ends, the top plate 16 is bent down at 20, said bent-down portion being formed integral with, or secured to the upper end of an elongated, relatively flat fuel chamber 21 which lies flat against one edge of the cigarette package, and by reason of its shape does not materially increase the size of the package. The chamber 21 has an enlarged upper portion 22 provided with a closure screw 23 through which a wick 24 extends. Said wick projects downwardly into the interior of the fuel chamber, which may be either filled with an inflammable liquid 25 or else may be packed with an absorbent material saturated with such a liquid. With either arrangement, the wick 24 is kept saturated with the inflammable liquid so that its projecting upper end may be ignited by means of a spark produced by diagonally frictional contact of an abrasive strip 26 located on the under face of the sliding cover member 17 with a flint or piece of pyrophoric material 27 projecting above the upper end of the fuel chamber and located adjacent to the upper end of the wick 24 as shown in Figs. 6 and 9.
In using the device, the smoker places his thumb against the rounded head of the screw 19 and pushes it toward the right, when viewed as in Fig. 1. This slides the cover 1'? toward the right, and since the cover plates 15 and 16 of 105 the frame are of shorter length than the top of the cigarette package, the sliding movement of the cover will act to uncover a part of the top of the package to expose some of the cigarettes therein, as shown in Fig. 5. This opening moveno meat of the cover produces a spark by the frictional action of the abrasive strip 26 against the upper end of the flint 27, the spark acting to lgnite the upper end of the wick 24.
The cover plate is provided with a cut-out section 28 which, when the cover is slid to its open position, becomes located in registration with the wick 24, and serves 'to uncover the same so that the cigarette which has been extracted from, the package may be readily lighted by the smoker. When the cover plate is slid to closed position by movement of the screw 19 to the left end of the slot 18, the flame of the wick 24 is extinguished, as a part of the plate, consisting of a flanged portion 29 extends over and covers the upper end of the fuel chamber 21 and also the flint 27 and wick 24 extending upwardly from thefuel chamber. Located within the flange 29 is a pair of spaced flanges 30 which cooperate with a portion of the flange 29 to form part of an enclosure for the upper end of the wick. As the cover is slid to its closed position, the flanges 30 cooperate with upwardly projecting wall 34 on the screw 23 to form an enclosure for the wick, thus shutting off the supply of air thereto and instantly snuffing out theflame.
The flint or pyrophoric substance 27 is normally held in contact with the abrasive strip 26 by means of a lengthy coil spring 31, contained within a tube 32 extending through the fuel chamber 21, and the tension of the spring and consequently the pressure of the flint 2''! is regulated by means of an adjusting screw 33 threaded intothe lower end of the tube 32.
It will be noted that the abrasive strip 26 is diagonally cut as clearly shown in Fig. 4, this diagonal cutting of the surface to produce serrations therein, acting to direct the spark angularly toward the wick and insure positive ignition of the same, when the cover plate 17 is slid to its open position.
The operation of the device is extremely simple, since the lighter is automatically ignited by the sliding movement of the cover necessary to open the package, and is extinguished by a closing movement, so that the lighting of the cigarette is performed without any additional effort on the partof the smoker.
