Claims. (01. 131'5) The present invention relates to machines for making cigarettes.
An importantobject of the invention is the provision of a cigarette machine designed so that cigarettes may be made rapidly and without strenuous effort.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a cigarettemachine of the above character constructed so that cigarettes formed thereby will be of unusually uniform and desirable shape.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a cigarette machine of the above type constructed so that the density of the tobacco, that is, whether the cigarette is to be loosely or tightly packed, can be gauged during the cigarette forming operation.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a machine of the above character which will be relatively simple and durable in construction and reliable in operation. 7

Referring to the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 15 generally the form of a rectangular receptacle having a bottom arcuately curved in cross section to form a magazine chamber 16. At one side of the body forming receptacle is formed a longitudinally extending channel 17 having a rounded bottom and straight sides. As shown at Figure 4, the

As clearly illustrated at Figures 4, 5 and 6, the bottom of the channel 17 is pro-. vided with a relatively narrow longitudinally dis-. posed slot 19 extending approximately throughout the length of the body.
In'the front wall of the body is formed an annular flanged outlet 21 registering with the lower portion of the channel 17. ,Within the flange of the outlet 21 is securedjthe inner part. of a discharge tube 22.
Rotatably supported in bearings 24 and 25 depending from the front and rear portions of the body 15 is a helical operating screw 26 providedat the ends with journals 27 rotatably disposed in the bearings and secured against longitudinal displacement. As shown at Figures 4 and 5, the screw 26 is disposed horizontally below the slot 19 in the bottom of the packing channel 1'7. Upon the screw 26 is fitted a nut or follower 28 having GOIZ connection, through the medium of a vertical, A
Hingedlyconnected'with the body in the rear portion of the channel 1'7, so as to permit vertical swinging movement thereof, is a top or coverbariv 33 of such length as to extend'from the hinge connection 34 to the front wall of the receptacle when disposed in a downward channel covering position. This bar is also of arouate'curvature in cross section having sharply defined side edges spring structure of the bracket will force the pin 37 into, an perture 39 in a front wall of the receptacle so asto lock the bar in horizontal charge forming position. To release the bar and swing the same upwardly, it is merely necessary to engage and force the knob 38 rearwardly to disen gage the pin 37 from the aperture 39 in the receptacle.
In order to connect the body of the machine with a suitable supporting structure, a clamping bracket 41 provided with a clamping screw 42 is formed integral with the receptacle and depends therebelow enabling detachable connection with the edge portion of a table or supporting ledge.
At the front wall of the receptacle 15 is formed a slot provided with an arcuate outwardly projecting lip 44 forming a curved rest for the end portionof the cigarette. To the inner face of the front wall is pivotally connected a cutter blade 45 attached to the wall by pivot pin and frictional washer, indicated at 46, and formed with a handle 47. As shown at Figure 8, the bottom of the blade 45 is formed with an oblique bevel cutting edge 48 disposed for effective trimming of protruding tobacco of a formed cigarette.
A longitudinally extending transversely curved flange 49 is formed at the side of the body 15 to provide a side covering for the screw 26.
' During operation a supply of tobacco suitable for making a number of cigarettes is maintained in the magazine chamber 16 of a body receptacle. In preparation for the forming of the charge the cover bar 33 is swungto an elevated rearward position, as shown at Figure 6, and the plunger 30 disposed in a retracted position in the channel 17. A quantity of tobacco is there after brushed from the magazine chamber over the ridge 18 into thechannel, the height ,of the charge-deposited in the channel with respect to the ridge being regulated in accordance with the requirement for a loosely or'a tightly packed cigarette, a few practical operations enabling theattainment of suflicient skill to'determine the gauging of tobacco in this regard.
When the predetermined charge of tobacco is thus d'epositedin the channel, the cover bar 33 is swung downwardly to its closed position, as shownin dotted lines at Figure 6, wherein the cover co-acts with the bottom bar 31 to form an approximately cylindrical charge compressing bore. I'he sides of the cover bar 33 are formed so as to form cutting edges designed to cut shre'ads of tobacco intercepting the bar during this downward movement in co-operation with the straight sides of the forming channel 17, preventing obstruction to the downward movement of the bar during the charge compressing operation.
A crank 50, attached to the rear journal of' the screw 26, is then manually rotated in a clockwise direction causing similar rotation of the screw and forward sliding movement of the nut 28, as well as the bottom bar 31 and plunger 30 connected therewith. This movement of the plunger and bottom'bar' ejects the charge of tobacco through the forward outlet and delivery tube 22 from whence the tobacco is forced into acigarette' wrapper tube 51 fitted to the discharge tube 22. Upon completion of the wrapper filling operation, the crank 50 is rotated in a reverse or counter clockwise direction to restore the plunger and bottom bar to their initial retracted positions,the coverbar' 33 is elevated and the or bottom face of the cover bar 33 is also to be preferablypolished to provide a smooth surface for efficient ejection of the charge.
When thecigarette wrapper has been filled the tobacco projecting from the end thereof is efficiently trimmed by disposing the cigarette in the arcuate lip 44 formed at the front wall and cutting the protruding tobacco with the cutter blade 45 forming a finished cigarette.
It is to be understood that the form of our invention herein shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes as to the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without depar't-' ing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.-
Having thus described our claim:
1. In a cigarette making device a receptacle having a longitudinally extendingchannel formed at one side thereof, a channel cover pivotally" connected with the body and operable to a bore invention, we
forming position in the channel, a tobacco eject ing plunger slidably fitted in the bottom portion of the channel, and a rotatable member sup-' ported adjacent the channel having connection: with the plunger for sliding the latter in reverse directions in the channel.
2. In a cigarette making device a receptacle having a longitudinally extending channelform'ed at one side thereof, a channel cover pivotally" connected with the body and operable to a bore forming position in the channel, a tobacco ejecting plunger slidably fitted in the bottom portion of the channel, and a screw rotat'ably' supported the bar in co-operation with the sides of the channel, a plunger slidable longitudinally inthe channel, and means for reversely sliding the plunger in the channel.
4. In a cigarette making device, a body, an elongated ridge projecting vertically in the body dividing the body to form a magazine chamber and a charge forming channel at one side of" the chamber, the said ridge being adapted to provide a gauge during filling of the channel, a movable cover for covering the channel when charged, and meansfor ejecting: the tobacco from the channel.
5. In a cigarette making device, areceptacle having a charge forming channel, amovable cover bar having a concave inner face movable to 'acharge compressing position in thechannel, the said cover having cutting edges cooperative with the sides of thechannel tocut tobacco inter cepting the bar, and slidable'means operable in. the channel for'ejecting the charge therefrom.
