8 Claims. (Cl. 161-1) The present invention relates to time operated and operating mechanism and embodies, more specifically, an improved time switch operating mechanism, wherein an effective actuating mechanism is provided for operating the switching mechanism by a suitable timing mechanism.
While the field of time operated switching mechanism and kindred mechanisms has been highly developed and a great number of time switch mechanisms provided, the present invention relates to certain details of construction which render the foregoing mechanisms more easily adjusted. More particularly the invention embodies the provision of a rotating rim and mounting device therefor upon the clock structure in combination with the clock dial whereby manipulation of the adjusting mechanism may be readily efiected.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved actuating means for the device or devices to be actuated by the timing mechanism, such means being provided with an efiective adjusting and clamping means whereby the setting of the on and off clamps may be readily effected.
Further objects, not specifically enumerated above, will be apparent as the invention is described in greater detail in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:

With reference to the above drawing, a mounting plate is shown at 10 upon which an electric motor 11 and a suitable gear train 12 are mounted. The motor and gear train may be of any standard form and are adapted to drive the hands 13 and 14 of the clock mechanism which move over a dial 15.
Also mounted upon the plate 10 is an auxiliary plate 16 which serves as a cooperating mounting plate for the time operated mechanism which may be controlled by a link 1'1. This link is connected to a manually operated lever 18 to enable the device to be manually actuated and lever 18 is provided with a pin 19 which is adapted to be engaged by on and of! clamps described hereinafter.
, A spring 20 may be provided to maintain the levers 1'7 and 18 in either position indicated in solid and dot and dash lines in Figure 1. The foregoing mechanism constitutes no part of the present invention and may be selected from any of a number of well known devices now avail able.
Driven by the gear train 12 is a gear 21 which. is journaled at 22 upon the mounting plate and associated mounting structure. The teeth of gear 21 are adapted to engage with teeth 23 upon a rotating rim 24. Rim 24 is formed with a cylindrical shoulder 25 and an annular disc or dial portion 26 which terminates in a peripheral cylindrical flange 27.
A plurality of rollers 28 are journaled upon the supporting structure rearwardly of the dial 15 and are formed with peripheral grooves 29 within which the toothed portion 23 of the rotating rim 24 is received.- The peripheries of the rollers engage the shouldered portion 25 of the rim and thus rotatably mount it about the dial 15. The offset portion formed by the shoulder 25 causes the surface of the annular dial 26 to lie substantially in the same plane as the dial 15 and thus adds materially to the appearance of the mechanism. While three rollers 28 have been shown in the present instance, it will be apparent that any number may be provided without altering the construction materially.
Upon the cylindrical portion 27 of the rim 24, on and oil clamps 30 and 31 are mounted, these clamps each being formed of a plate 32 having an L-shaped arm 33 which is adapted to receive the flange 2'1 and dial 26. The extremities of the arms 33 receive set screws 34 which may be advanced into or retracted from the dial 26. Clamping blocks 35 are formed with tapered recesses 36 to receive'the tapered extremities of the set screws 34 and the axis of the recesses is more distant from the edges of the blocks adjacent the flanges, 2'? than the axes of the set screws 34are from such member. As a result, therefore, when a set screw 34 is advanced into the recess 36, the edge of the recess adjacent the flange 27 is first engaged and the block 35 urged against the inner suriace of. the flange 27. This afi'ords aneffective clamping action which secures the clamps to the rim without marring the face of the dial.
The on clamp 30 is provided with a cam 37 which is adapted to engage pin 19 to force the same downwardly into the dot and dash position shown in Figure 1. The off clamp 31 is provided with a cam face 38 which is adapted to engage the pin 19 to urge the same in the opposite direction, into the position shown in solid lines in Figure 1.
It will thus be seen that a time operated switching mechanism has been provided which affords a means for conveniently setting the mechanism. The clamps provided thereby are readily and efiectively actuated and the mechanism thus conveniently adjusted. The rotating rim is of such construction as to cooperate effectively with the clock dial and is effectively supported upon the supporting structure of the timing mechanism.
While the invention has been described with specific reference to the accompanying drawing, it is not to be limited, save as defined in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In combination with a time operated mechanism and means to be operated thereby, a dial for the mechanism, a rotatable ring mounted concentrically with the dial, an ofl'set cylindrical portion formed on the ring having an inwardly extending toothed annular flange, means actuated by the time operated mechanism to engage the toothed flange and a plurality of grooved rollers on the mechanism adapted to engage the ofiset portion and receive the toothed portion in the grooves therein.
2. In combination with a time operated mech-- anism and means to be operated thereby, a dial for themechanism, a rotatable ring mounted concentrically with the dial, an ofiset cylindrical portion formed on the ring having an inwardly extending toothed annular flange, means actuated by the time operated mechanism to engage the toothed flange and a cylindrical clamp receiving rim formed at the outer periphery of the ring.
3. In combination with a time operated mechanism, an actuating clamp adapted to be secured to the time operated mechanism comprising a plate, means on the plate to actuate a desired mechanism upon movement of the said means by the time operated mechanism, an arm on the plate having an extension parallel to the plate, a block, and means on the arm to move the block parallel to the plate, whereby the plate and actuating means thereon may be clamped to the time operated mechanism by the extension, block, and last named cooperating means.
4. In combination with a time operated mechanism, an actuating clamp adapted to be 5. 6. In combination with a time operated mechanism, an actuating clamp adapted to engage an edge of the time operated mechanism of predetermined thickness comprising a plate, means on the plate to actuate a desired mechanism upon movement of the said means by the time operated mechanism, an arm on the plate having an extension parallel to the plate, a set screw in the extension movable toward the plate, and a block having a clamping edge and recess, the axis of which is a greater distance from the clamping edge of the block than the distance of the axis of the screw from the adjacent edge of the time operated mechanism to which the block may be clamped, whereby the plate and actuating means thereon may be clamped to'the time operated mechanism by the extension, block, and last named cooperating means.
7. In combination with a time operated mechanism, a ring having a cylindrical clamping flange, an actuating clamp including a plate having means thereon to actuate a desired mechanism upon movement of the said means by the time operated mechanism, an arm on the plate having an extension parallel to the plate and adapted to overlie the flange, a set screw in the extension and a block having a clamping edge and recess, the axis of which is a greater distance from the clamping edge thereof than the distance of the axis of the set screw from the adjacent edge of the cylindrical clamping flange, whereby the plate and actuating means thereon may be clamped to the time operated mechanism by the extension, block and last named cooperating means.
8. In combination with a time operated mechanism, a ring having a cylindrical clamping flange, an actuating clamp including a plate having means thereon to actuate a desired mechanism upon movement of the said-means by the time operated mechanism, an arm on the plate having an extension parallel to the plate and adapted to overlie the flange, a set screw in the extension having a tapered point, and a block having a clamping edge and a tapering recess, the axis of which is of greater distance from the clamping edge thereof than the distance of the axis of the set screw from the adjacent edge of the cylindrical clamping flange, whereby the plate and actuating means thereon may be clamped to the time operated mechanism by the extension, block, and last nam cooperating means.
