Description
A. JONES Cultivator.
" N0.I96,670. Patented Oct. 30, I877.
' lTN SE INVENTOR M am ATTORN EYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ASA JONES, OF SNOW HILL, NORTH CAROLINA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO JOHN H. DAIL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATO RS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,670, dated October 30, 1877; application filed September 8, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASA JONES, of Snow Hill, in the county of Greene and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Cultivators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact-description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal vertical sectional view of my cultivator, and Fig. 2 a plan view of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a cultivator, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
A represents an ordinary plow-beam, with handles B B, said handles being braced by a bar, (3, connecting the rear end of the beam with a round between the handles.
D represents aboard or plate, of rectangular or other suitable form, held to the under side of the beam A by means of two bolts, a a, passing through beam, through curved slots 1) b in the board, and through a plate or bar, 0!, on the under side of the board.
In each end of the board D is a curved slot,
- e, said two slots running in opposite directions-one near the front edge and the other near the rear edge, as shown. Under each end of the board D is fastened a plow, which is fastened by a single bolt, f, forming the center of the circle of which the curved slot c is an arc. Each plow is then held at any angle, according to the angle at which the board D is placed, and held by a bolt, h, passing through the slot 0. The bolts f and h also pass through a plate or bar, d, on top of the board.
The plows used are each composed of a frame, E, with shovel-plow G in front and wings H in rear. The board may be adjusted and held at any angle under the plow-beam, according to the work intended to be done, the plows being then adjusted to correspond. The board may be held at right angles to the beam, in which case a turning-plow may be worked on each end of the beam, for the purpose of bedding or listing land for corn or cotton. A third plow may then be worked in front of the board, and the end plows, being turn-plows, making a list or bed on the center furrow; or it may be worked in rear of the board, cleaning out the balk or middle left by the plows worked on the ends of the board, which may be turning-plows or shovel or cotton plows.
When the board is set at an angle of fortyfive degrees three plows may be worked on the board-one in the center and one at each end-the distances between the furrows being regulated by the curved slots and bolts. Sweeps with points may be worked when the other plows are removed.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the plow-beam A, of the adjustable board D, slotted at each end at c, and in the center at b, with the adjustingplows G E fastened thereto by means of the bolts f h, and operating in the manner as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ASA JONES.
