PATENT QFFICE.
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BlLLlARD-BRIDGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,568, dated October 30, 1877 application filed August 24, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK E. DOUGHTY, of New York city, in the county and State of NewYork, have invented a new and Improved Billiard-Bridge, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a sectional end elevation of my improved billiard-bridge, and Fig. 2 a side elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The obj ect'of this invention is to furnish for billiard-players an improved bridge, by which the one may be supported in any desired position above the bridge with great facility by the mere turning of the handle of the bridge; and the invention consists of a billiard-bridge having a central vertically sliding and guided cue-rest, that is raised or lowered by a pinion connected to the end of the bridge-handle, and intermeshing with an interior rack of the sliding rest.
In the drawing, A represents a billiardbridge that is provided with a central vertically sliding and guided cue-rest, B, and with fixed side rests B. The cue-rest B slides, by
a slotted shank-piece, in a guide-recess of the bridge, and is adjusted to any suitable height above the same, as required by the player, by means of a pinion, O, that is attached by a screw-shaft to the end of the bridge-handle E, and arranged to intermesh with an internal rack, D, of the shank part of the cuerest.
The pinion O is revolved in either direction by merely turning the handle, and thereby the cue-rest is raised or lowered in the bridge until the one is in the position required by the player. The billiard-bridge serves, by this simple and conveniently-operated rest, for the nicer adjustment of the cue, and is thereby of greater utility to billiard-players than the present bridge.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a billiard-bridge, of a vertically-adjustable cue-rest, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a billiard-bridge, of a vertically sliding and guided cue-rest, adjusted by the turning of the bridge-handle, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination of the billiard-bridge with the guided and sliding cue-rest, and with adjusting-gear operated by the bridge-handle, substantially as specified.
4.. The combination of the billiard-bridge, having guide-recess, with adjustable cue-rest, having slotted shank with internal rack, and with intermeshing pinion at end of bridgehandle, to raise or lower cue-rest by turning of said handle, substantially as described.
FRANK E. DOUGHTY.
