Description

HS T EB r 8 PP .nw LP No. 196,358. Patented Oct. 23,1877.
N) PETERS. PNOT0 UTHOGRAPHEL WASHINGTON, Dv C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LORENZO P. HEATH, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, 'ASSIGNOR T POWERS PAPER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN PAPER BOXES.-
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,35 8, dated October 23, 1877; application filed May 31, 1877.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, LORENZO P. HEATH, of Springfield, county of Hampden, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Boxes, and in the manner of cutting, scoring, and folding the blanks therefor, which improvement is fully set forth in the annexed specification and in the accompanying drawings, which consist of four figures.
Figure 1 represents a blank cut to the form I employ, and shows the scored lines, which are all out so as to be on the outside of the box when the blank is folded. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a partially-formed box as two sides are being folded over. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the box, showing the sides completely folded over. Fig. 4 shows the shape of the corners of the box.
The object of my invention is to make a paper box from a form that requires to be scored only on one side of the paper, and being so scored and cut to a proper shape can be folded so as to form a box, the outer sides of which form two sides of a triangle, and in which the border portions of the blank are folded up,
over, and downward, so as to form the inner sides of the box and the base of the triangle. The blank is also so out that the triangular sides meet and form a miter-joint at the corners of the box.
In the drawing, in which like letters refer to like parts in the different figures, a, Fig. 1, are the flaps which fold up, over, and down, and form the inner vertical sides of the box or the base of the triangle. b b b 1) form the upper face of the triangle. (See Fig. 3.) d cl (1 (1- form the under face of the triangle, Fig. 3.
The dotted lines on Fig. 1 show the scoring plan, all of which is done on one side only of the sheet.
Blanks of a difierent form from mine have heretofore been made for the purpose of making therefrom boxes of similar form to the one which I describe herein; but those blanks required scoring on both sides of the sheet, and consequently were more expensive to make; also, the manner of making the box required the blank to be folded with the outer edge of the blank outside and at the bottom edge of v tioned blank, whereby a box is made of the form described and shown, by scoring all the folding-lines on the outside of the blank, and by folding all of the portions (1. a a a, b b b b, d d d d of the blank from the outer edge of same up over toward the center of the blank, and downward, so that the border-flaps a form the inner sides of the box, substantially as set forth.
LORENZO PRESCOTT HEATH.
