A principal'object of the invention is to provide a gondola car with new and improved means for supporting portions of the carfloor. Another object of the invention is to provide new and improved meansfor reinforcing the doors .em-
ployed for closing the lading discharge openings in the car floor.
A primary feature of the invention consists in providing means for supporting the portion of the car floorwhich is interposed'between'the side sill of the car andan adjacent edge of 1a lading discharge door, said means-involving a member having angularly disposed portions one of which is secured to the side sill and the other to the said portion of the floor.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, -1 indicatesthe centersillsand 2 the side-sills. .The .centersills may be of usual construction having .a ,web -3, oppositely projecting 'bottom .fla-nges -4 and an 2 inwardly projecting top fiange 5. As is customary thetop flanges of thercenter sill are connected by a top cover plate 6. The side sills are .of -well-known type having -anzinwardlyanddownwardly inclinedxweb 7 and'substantiallyvertical topandbottom flanges 8 and 9, respectively. The .top flanges 8 of the side sills .afford convenient means to which the side sheets 10 of the car maybe secured.
"The'lading discharge openings of the car are defined in part by crossbearers or diaphragms llwhichras'they'form nopart of the invention, may beof any suitable construction butv each is preferably f ormed'with a substantially horizontal 'top fiange 12. Extending longitudinally of the-car-and overlylng'thetopof the center sill is a wooden plank or the like 13 which divides the lading discharge opening on one side of the car from that on the other side. This plank may be advantageously suported in spaced relation to the center sill by a plurality of brackets 14 each of which involves a bottom plate member 15 which is preferably riveted. to the top cover plate 6 and the inwardly projecting flanges 5 of the center sill and a top plate portion 16 which is connected to the plank 13 by bolts 17. The top and bottom plate members 15 and 16 of each bracket are preferably connected by a pair of transversely extending web portions 18 and a longitudinally extending web 19. If desired the plank 13 may be provided with a protecting metal strip 20 which projects beyond the adjacent edges of the top flanges 12 of the adjoining cross bearers, overlying the latter and being preferably secured thereto by rivets 21. Moreover for a purpose which will hereinafter appear the side edges of the metal strip 20 project beyond opposite sides of the wooden plank 13.
Defining the outer edge of each lading discharge opening is a wooden plank 22 which extends longitudinally of the car and is disposed adjacent the inclined web '7 of the neighboring side sill. Each of the planks 22 is preferably supported by means which is rigid with the side sill, said means involving an angle portion having substantially horizontal and vertical members 23 and 24, respectively, and a substantially horizontal flange 25 which projects inwardly from adjacent the lower edge of the vertical member 24. The upper surface of the horizontal member 23 is substantially flush with the upper surface of the wooden plank 22 while the flange 25 underlies and affords a support for the plank. At spaced intervals the angle portion of the supporting means is provided with depressed or recessed portions 26 to afford downwardly and inwardly inclined portions 27 for receiving rivets 28 to rigidly connect the supporting means to the inclined web of the side sill. The plank 22 is preferably secured to the inwardly projecting flange 25 of the supporting means We plurality of bolts 29.
Each of the lading discharge openings is normally closed by a hinged door 30 which is formed by a plurality of planks 31. The planks of each door are rigidly connected by a pair of members 32 which extend from adjacent the hinged edge of the door to a point outwardly of the free edge thereof. Each of the members 32 is formed with a web portion 33 which is substantially normal to the plane of the door and top and bottom flanges 34 and 35, respectively. The inner ends of the stiffening members are fashioned to receive pins 36 which extend throughapertured lugs 37 formed integrally with the transverse webs 18 of the brackets 14 whereby the doors are hingedly mounted.
Adjacent their free edges each of the doors is preferably reinforced by an angle member which has a flange 39 secured to the underside of the door and a flange 40 projecting downwardly from the latter. The flange 39 extends beyond the free edge of the door and is adapted to underlie an adjacent portion of the plank 22 to prevent the escape of fine lading from the car. Moreover the side edges of the doors are adapted, to underlie the top flanges 12 of the crossbearers and the hinged or inner edge of the door is adapted to underlie the adjacent portion of the metal strip 20. In this manner each edge of the door is sealed against the escape of fine lading.
The top flange 34 of each of the door stiffening members 32 has portions 41 and 42 which project on opposite sides of the Web portion 33. The portion 41 is of substantially uniform width from adjacent the hinge to adjacent the free edge of the door while the portion 42 increases in width from adjacent the hinge to the free edge of the door. Adjacent the free edge of the door each of the portions of the flange is substantially of the same width and is connected by bolts 43 to the adjacent portion of the door while the portion 41 of the flange is connected to each of the planks of the door by bolts 44. Immediately adjacent the free edge of the door each portion of the top flange is offset downwardly from the door as at 41a to extend beneath the flange 39 of the angle member 33 for attachment thereto by bolts 45. From the outer edge of the portion 41a the top flange extends downwardly in a substantially vertical direction as at 46 for attachment to the inner face of the flange 38 by rivets 47. From adjacent this point the member 32 inclines downwardly and outwardly as a whole 100 and projects beneath the adjacent side sill for cooperation with a hook 48 which forms a portion of the door supporting mechanism which is carried by the side sill. The portion 41 of the flange 39 terminates and merges into the web 33 inwardly of the point where the member 32 projects beneath the side sill while the portion 42 of the top flange continues to the end of the memher and affords means for cooperating with the supporting ledge 49 of the hook 48.
The bottom flange 35 of each of the members 32 passes from one side of the web portion 33 adjacent the hinged edge of the door to the other side of the web 33 adjacent the free edge of the door and adjacent the latter edge it is of the same width as the adjacent portion of the portion 42 of the top flange. At the end of the member 32 the bottom flange 35 and the portion 42 of the top flange are preferably integrally connected by an end wall 50.
From the foregoing it will be observed that simple and efiicient means has been provided for supporting portions of the car floor adjacent the free edge of the door thereby making it unnecessary to form these portions of the floor so as to conform to the inclined portions of the side sills. Moreover simple and efficient means has been devised for stiffening the doors and for preventing the escape of fine lading from the car.
I claim:
1. In a railway gondola car having a floor provided with a lading discharge opening, a hinged door for closing the opening, a member rigid with the door adjacent its free edge, said member having a portion secured to the under side of the door and a portion projecting downwardly therefrom, said first-named portion extending beyond the free edge of the door and being adapted when the door is in closed position to underlie an adjacent portion of the car floor, and stiffening means for the door disposed at an angle to the hinge axis thereof, said stiffening means being rigidly secured to each of said portions of said member and having a portion projecting beyond the free edge of the door for cooperating with mechanism to support the door in closed position.
2. In a railway gondola car having a floor provided with a lading discharge opening, a door for closing the opening, said door being provided adjacent its free edge with a downwardly projecting 150 flange, and a member rigid with the door having a portion projecting outwardly beyond the free edge thereof for cooperating with mechanism to support the door in closed position, said member having a web normal to the plane of the door and a flange projecting on opposite sides of said web, said flange overlapping the inner face of the downwardly projecting flange of the door and being rigidly secured to said flange and the main body portion of the door on opposite sides of said web.
8. In a railway gondola car having a floor provided with a lading discharge opening, a hinged door for closing the opening, an angle member rigid with the door adjacent the free edge thereof and having a plurality of flanges, and an arm rigid with the door having a portion projecting outwardly beyond the free edge thereof for cooperating with mechanism to support the door in closed position, said arm having a portion substantially normal to the plane of the door and a flange projecting on oppos'te sides of said portion, said flange having angularly disposed portions respectively secured to the flanges of said angle member.
4. In a railway gondola car having a floor provided with a lading discharge opening, the combination with a side sill extending below the plane of the floor, of a door for closing said lading discharge opening, an angle member rigid with the door adjacent the free edge thereof and having a plurality of flanges, and an arm secured to the door and having a substantially vertical portion and being provided adjacent the free edge of the door with a flange projecting on opposite sides of said vertical portion, said last-named flange being secured to the flanges of said angle member. 5. In a railway gondola car having a floor provided with a lading discharge opening, a hinged door for closing the opening, and a stiffening member extending from adjacent the hinged edge of the door to adjacent the free edge thereof, said member having a substantially vertical portion and a top flange provided with portions projecting on opposite sides of said vertical portion, one of said flange portions being of substantially uniform width from adjacent the hinged edge to adjacent the free edge of the door and the other of said flange portions increasing in width from adjacent said hinged edge to said free edge.
6. In a railway gondola car having a floor provided with a lading discharge opening, a door for closing the opening, and a stiffening member for the door extending from adjacent the hinged edge thereof to adjacent the free edge thereof, said stiffening member having a substantially vertical portion and a top flange having portions projecting on opposite sides of said vertical portion, one of said flange portions being of substantially uniform width throughout its length and the other of said flange portions progressively increasing in width from adjacent the hinged edge of the door to adjacent the free edge thereof, each of said portions of the top flange being rigidly secured to the door adjacent the free edge thereof.
