Description

T. W. M'cKEE-VER. Odorless Gommodes.
No. 196,158. Patented Oct. 16, 1877.
'ww/ll 'Q/ZW/ Wkfi V UNITED STATES PATENT Orrron.
TIMOTHY W. MCKEEVEB, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOB TO BENHAMS & STOUTENBOROUGH, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN O DORLESS COMMODES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,158, dated October 16, 1877; application filed August 10, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TIMOTHY W. lVIGKEEVER, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Odorless Oommodes,'of which the following is a specification:
Sloppails have been made of a double conical form with a bail and cover; and in some instances a seat or rim has been provided, in order that it may be used as a stool in sickrooms, hospitals, &c. In these articles there is no provision for rendering the cover or the seat air-tight hence, when moved from place to place, an oflensive and sometimes deleterious odor passes from the contents and escapes.
My present invention is made to prevent the escape of vapors or noxious or injurious gases from the slop-pail or commode, and at the same time to provide for the use of the sloppail as a stool or commode without lessening its utility as a slop-pail.
In the drawing my improvement is illustrated by a vertical section.
The vessel, composed of the inverted conical body a and conical top I), supported by the conical skirt or base 0, is of usual character, and a handle or bail, f, is provided for transportation.
There is an inward flange, i, at the upper part of the conical top I), and. a vertical, or nearly vertical, rim or flange, o.
The seat his of any desired size and shape, with a central opening that accommodates the person; and the rim Z projects downwardly from the edges of. the seat h, and rests upon thefiange This seat is easily removed when not required for use, or when the pail is to be emptied, and the slop-pail can-be employed'in the ordinary manner.
The cover of the pail is made with an airtight elastic edge, to sit upon the conical portion I) of the pail. This cover is provided with a strip of india-rubber, s, that is drawn or stretched around the metal band 1', and these are inserted in and secured between the outer rim m of the cover and the inner rim n. The cover may be closed, as seen at t, and provided with a handle, u, so as to be used in the ordinary manner as a slop-pail; or the rims m n and rubber packing may be attached to the under surface of a larger seat, as shown by dotted lines, so as to make a tight joint between the seat and pail, and prevent the escape of gases when the seat is being made use of.
This seat can be removed from the slop-pail previous to the cover being placed onthe pail. The seat or cover is rendered tight enough for ordinary purposes by its own weight; but under heavier pressure the india-rubber is compressed, and the cover or seat more firmly secured upon the conical portion 1) of the pail.
I claim as my invention- 1. In combination with the slop-pail a b c, the india-rubber packing s between the rims m n, and resting upon the conical portion 1) of the pail, to form a tight joint, substantially as set forth.
2. The slop-pail a b 0, made with the inward flange 1 rim 0, and movable seat h, in combination with the cover I, having an elastic edge, 8, that rests upon the conical portion I) of the pail, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me this 6th day of August, A. D. 1877.
T. WV. MCKEEVER.
