Description
May 22, 1934. w. A. GoERTz VANITY BOX Filed March 16, 1933 llll INVENTOR Waller A. Goa/"Z BY is thereby disfiguring the Patented May 22, 1934 UNITED STATES VANITY BOX Walter A. Goert August Goertz New Jersey Application March 16,
6 Claims.
This invention relates, generally, to vanity boxes or compacts for carrying cosmetic materials; and the invention has reference, more particularly, to improvements in vanity boxes or compacts carrying loose powder or the like.
' Vanity boxes for carrying loose powder, as
heretofore generally constructed, have been somewhat objectionable in use owing to the tendency of the powder to escape or sift out around the edges of the covers of the powder compartments when these covers are closed; such escaping powder not only covering objects within the vanity box, but also escaping from the box, especially when the same is opened, to fall upon objects,
same in addition to the wasting of the powder.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a vanity box having a novel construction of powder compartment, the said compartment being provided with means for sealing the joint between the compartment cover and the body of the compartment, thereby preventingthe escape or sifting of loose powder outwardly therefrom.
Another object of the present invention lies in the provision of a vanity box having a novel construction of powder compartment of the above character, which powder compartment, in its preferred form, is provided with a false bottom servmg to hold a felt disc or washer so that the peripheral edges thereof are adapted to engage the lower peripheral edge portions of the compartment cover in abutting relation when the cover is in closed position, to thereby prevent the escape of powder from the closed powder compartment.
'Other objects of this invention, not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the same.
' The invention is clearly illus companying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1,is a plan view of a vanity box embodying the improvements of the present invention, the body sections thereof being shown in open relation.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged part sectional view taken substantially along line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
m Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. l but illustrates the powder compartment cover in open position.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially along line 4-4 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view illustrating .the
trated in the acz, Newark, N. J., assignor to Inc., a corporation of 1933, Serial No. 661,037 (CL 132-83) manner of assembling the several parts of the powder compartment.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to said drawing, the reference character 6 indicates a lower body section of the vanity box and '7 an upper body section thereof. Said body sections are respectively provided along their meeting rear edges with hinge knuckles 8, which interfit one with another to receive a hinge pin 9, whereby said sections are hingedly connected together so as to close one upon another. The periphery of the upper section 7 is provided, at the point thereof opposite its hinge connection with thelower body section, with a hinge lip 10 which is adapted to cooperate with a catch 11 provided at a corresponding point on the periphery of the lower body section 6. The hinge lip 10 and the-catch 11 serve to interlock the sections 6 and 7 in closed relation.
A powder receptacle 12 is contained within the lower body section 6, the bottom 13 of this powder receptacle resting upon the inner wall surface of the lower body section. The powder receptacle 12 is illustrated as of cylindrical shape although this receptacle may have any other desired shape and has an upper outwardly extending transverse flange 14 of a shape conforming to the interior of the lower body section 6. The peripheral edge portion of the flange 14 is formed with a bead 15 terminating in a depending apron 16 that conforms closely to the upper inner side wall surface of the body section 6 and is retained within this body section as by friction or by the use of any suitable securing means. The body section 6 and the cover section 7 are illustrated as of octagonal shape in plan but it is to be understood that these sections may have any desired shape, such as round or square. The bead 15 by extending around the peripheral edge portion of the flange 14 and fitting snugly against the upper edge portion of the body section 6 produces a pleasing and attractive appearance.
carried by the flange 14 of the powder receptacle 12.
A spring catch 24 is attached to the lower surface of flange 14 at a point diametrically opposite the hinge knuckle 22 and extends upwardly through an opening provided in this flange 14. spring catch 2 1 has a catch projection 26 for engaging the upper surface of'flange 18-tothereby hold the cover 19 in closed position. Spring. catch 24 is provided with a releasing knob 25, which, when pressed radially outwardly with respect to the cover 19, serves to release this cover from projection 26, permitting the turning of this cover 19 about its hinged. connection 22-23 to open position. 7
Contained within the powder receptacle 12, in overlying relation to the bottom 13 thereof, is a disc or washer of felt 27 which has an annular upturned peripheral edge portion or flange 28 that extends upwardly adjoining the inner surfaces of the side walls of the receptacle 12, the upper edges of the flange 28 being positioned to engage the peripheral edge portion of the cover 19 in abutting relation when this cover is in closed position.
Above the false bottom 29 and under the cover 19, i. e. when this cover is in closed position, there is provided a powder compartment for receiving loose powder 32. Since the powder compartment is completely encircled by the upturned peripheral flange 28 of the felt, which felt flange is positioned to abut the peripheral edge portion of the cover 19 when this cover is in closed position, the felt flange 18 serves to seal the joint between the cover 19 and the powder receptacle 12, thereby preventing the escape or sifting of powder from the powder compartment so long as the powder compartment is closed. When it is desired to remove powder from the powder compartment, it is merely necessary to press upon 1 knob 25 of spring catch 24, thereby permitting the moving of cover 19 to open position, whereupon the powder puff 21 may be employed for removing the powder in the usual way.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, as defined by the following claims, it is intended that'all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
