Description

April 24, 1934. s. D. ORSER PISTON EXPANDER Filed Aug. 1, 1933 ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 24, 1934 NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PISTON EXPANDER Application August 1, 1933, Serial No. 683,215
4 Claims.
This invention relates to piston expanders and has for the primary object the provision of a device which may be manufactured at a low cost and may be easily and quickly installed to a piston and adjusted to expand the skirt of a piston to render the latter with a proper fit to a cylinder for preventing piston slaps and loss of compression in the respective cylinder.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following descrip- 5 tion and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view illustrating a piston with an expander applied thereto and constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view showing the application of the expander to the piston.
Figure 3 is a perspective view illustrating the expander.
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view illustrating the means for adjusting the expander.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a conventional type of piston having the usual split skirt 2 provided with an internal flange 3 to which my invention is applied for the purpose of expanding or adjusting the skirt to fit a cylinder for the purpose of obviating piston slaps and loss of compression.
The expander consists of a substantially annular band or body 4 provided with separable ends 5 and 6. The body or band intermediate the ends 5 and 6 is offset to form a tension portion 7, normally having a tendency to expand the body or band. The end 5 of the band or body is beveled and has secured thereto a cuif 8 which slidably receives the end 6 and the cuff is provided with oppositely arranged slots 9 to receive a wedgeshaped key 10, one edge of which is provided with serrations 11 while the other edge is disposed substantially straight to contact with the end 6 of the band or body. The smallest end of the key is bent or offset to form a projection 12 for the purpose of contacting with the cuff to prevent the entire withdrawal of the key from the cuff. The body or band flts against the internal flange 3 of the skirt 2 of the piston, as shown in Figure 1, and is provided with upper and lower tongues 13 adapted to engage over the upper and lower faces of the flange 3 for retaining the expander in position on the piston.
It is to be understood that the expander may be applied to the piston while the latter is installed in the cylinder and after the expander has been adjusted to the flange 3, key is pushed or driven upwardly causing the separation of the ends of the band or body. This acts against the walls of the skirt or flange 3 of the piston to expand the skirt to properly fill the cylinder. The teeth of the key engage over a wall of the upper slot of the cuff and hold the key in various adjusted positions.
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A piston expander comprising a band-like body having separable ends, said body engageable with the internal face of a skirt of a piston, a cuff carried by one of the ends of the body and slidably receiving the other end, and means 00- acting with the cuff to separate the ends and bring about an expansion of the body.
2. A piston expander comprising a band-like body having separable ends, said body engageable with the internal face of a skirt of a piston, a cuff carried by one of the ends of the body and slidably receiving the other end, said cuff having oppositely arranged slots, and a wedge-shaped key received by the slots and acting to separate the ends of the body.
3. A piston expander comprising a band-like body having separable ends, said body engageable with the internal face of a skirt of a piston, a cuff carried by one of the ends of the body and slidably receiving the other end, said cuff having oppositely arranged slots, a wedge-shaped key received by the slots and located between the ends of the body with said ends having frictional contact with opposite edges of the key, teeth formed on one edge of the key to engage one wall of one of the slots to hold the key in adjusted position.
4. A piston expander comprising a band-like body having separable ends and. provided with a portion offset to tension the body, said body adapted to engage an internal flange of a skirt of a piston, upper and lower tongues on the body and engaging the flange of the piston, a cuff carried by one end of the body and receiving the other end, and a wedge adjustably connected to the cuff and engagingthe ends of the body.
