IMPROVEMENT IN PAINTING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,62 8, dated September 25, 1877; application filed August 21, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J. SPENoER MILLs, of Strawberry Plains, in the county of J eflferson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Painting Houses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved painting apparatus, and Fig. 2 is a side view.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

My invention has reference to a machine for painting houses, in which the paint shall be continuously fed from a box or reservoir to the brush, which is cylindrical in shape, and is revolved by suitable means.

It consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings hereto annexed, A A are two uprights, secured in a small platform, B. Between uprights A A is arranged a pivoted rod, 01., upon which the pain t-box G is secured, it being supported and held in position by a supporting-rod, b. The box 0, which may be made of sheet metal, has a hinged cover, through which the paint, which is ready ground and mixed, is placed therein, and on the front side it has a slide, 0, of the length of the box, which may be raised so as to leave a narrow slot or opening, (1, through which the paint may escape at the bottom of the box.

D is the brush, which is cylindrical in shape, as shown. Its central handle or shaft 01 rests in bearings in two posts or uprights, A A, in

front of uprights A A, and its periphery, when in this position, grazes the edge of the box 0, having the slot or opening 01. Shaft d is provided at one end with a drive-pulley, e, which is connected by a belt with another suitablyarranged pulley, which maybe rotated by hand or other power, thus revolving the brush.

In operation, the platform B, with the uprights, brush, and paint-box, is moved by suitable tackle, secured in the hook E of a bail, F, the ends of which, ff and f f, are fastened in the ends of uprights A A and A A, respectively, over the wall of the house which is to be painted, either from one side to the other, or from the top downward. The brush being, meanwhile, rotated, takes the paint, which is fed in any desired quantity, through slot (1 in box 0, and deposits it evenly upon the wall. If the paint is fed too rapidly, the box may be tipped back a short distance from the brush, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2; and if it is desired to discontinue feeding, it may be thrown back completely, as in Fig. 1.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The painting apparatus herein shown and described, consisting of platform B, having uprights A A A A, bail F, having hook E and legs f f f f, tilting reservoir 0, and rotary brush D, having operating-pulley c, all constructed and combined to operate substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
