Description
A ril 10, 1934. w. I. BURNS FRUIT JAR HOLDER Filed June 1955 Patented Apr. 10, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 8 Claims.
This invention relates to fruit jar holders and more particularly to a holder constructed for use in connection with the filling of fruit jars closely adjacent a stove or the like.
An object of this invention is to provide a fruit jar holder which embodies means for mounting the device at the side of a stove where the articles are being cooked, the device including means for holding the jar after it has been filled so as to permit the tightening of the cap on the jar so as to seal the contents thereof.
Another object of this invention is to provide a holder of this type including clamping means for clamping the devices on a stove and also including means whereby fruit jars or the like of varying sizes may be releasably clamped in the holder in. a manner whereby to hold the jar against turning while the cap is being screwed or otherwise fastened on the top thereof.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present pre-. ferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:--
Figure 1 is a detail side elevation partly broken away of a device constructed according to the embodiment of this invention, showing the device in applied position on the side of a stove, the stove being shown in fragmentary sectional form.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary front elevation of the device.
Figure 3 is a top plan view partly in section and partly broken away.
Figure 4 is a sectional view partly in taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates generally a table or platform of desired size provided with upturned side portions 11 and 12. The inner ends of the sides 11 and 12 are each provided with elongated slots 13 through which a bolt 14 passes, and a clamping member 15 is disposed one on each side of the platform or base 10 and engages against each side 11 and 12. These clamping members 15 have inclined outer edge portions 16 which con front a vertical edge 17 provided on an upstanding lug 18 integral with each side 11 and 12. The upper end of the clamping member 15 is adapted to engage beneath the downturned edge portion of a stove so as to hold the base or pla form 10 against outward movement relative to the top of the stove.
detail A standard comprising a pair of bars 19 which have their upper ends secured as by bolts 20, depends from the base or platform 10 and is secured at a point outwardly from the inner end thereof. The lower portions of these bars 19 are bent inwardly, as at 21, and secured by rivets or other securing members 22 to a hollow or tubular standard 23. This tubular standard or leg has a telescoping member 24 extending upwardly thereinto provided with a foot 25, and this sliding member 24 is secured in adjusted position by means of a bolt or set screw 26. In this manner, the standard or support comprising the bars 19, 21, 23 and 24 coact with the clamping members 15 to hold the platform or base 10 in substantially horizontal position.
A bracing member 2'7 extends between the two bars 19 intermediate the ends thereof and is provided with a plurality of apertures 28 at substantially the central point thereof within one of which a hook 29 integral with an elongated bracing member 30 is adapted to engage. The opposite end of the bracing member 30 is secured as by an eye 30a to the base or platform 19 adjacent the forward end thereof and coacts with the standard and the clamping members 15 to hold the platform 10 substantially horizontal. The upturned side member 11 has an extension 31 intermediate the ends thereof which is provided with a slot 32. The opposite side portion 12 has an extension 33 having a plurality of relatively large openings 34 and a relatively small opening 35.
A pair of jar clamping members, generally designated as 36 and 37, are disposed between the sides 11 and 12. This clamping member 36 comprises a segmental member 38 which is held in vertical position between the sides 11 and 12 by an elongated bar having a pin 39 at one end thereof engaged in the aperture 35, and this bar is bent intermediate its ends about the outside of the clamping member 36 and is extended outwardly through the slot 32 so as to provide a handle40. The pin 39 is preferably bent inwardly or toward the inner end of the platform 10 and in the direction opposite from the clamping member 37. The clamping member 37 is constructed similar to the clamping member 36 and is mounted in opposed relation thereto so that these two clamping members 36 and 37 will engage the periphery of a jar or other round object. These members 36 and 3'7 may be constructed as arcuate members or any other desired shape to hold jars or articles which are either round or angular.
A handle 41 extends laterally of the clamping member 37 and engages about the outside thereof and is provided on the opposite end with a head 42 which is adapted to be disposed through a selected aperture 34. The side 11 has along the upper edge thereof a toothed rack 43 and the handle 41 has a pawl 44 which is adapted to engage between selected teeth of the rack 43 so as to hold the movable clamping member 37 in adjusted position relative to the fixed clamping member 36. Each clamping member 36 and 37 is provided on its inner face with a pad or cushioning member 45 which is secured to the inner face thereof by means of inwardly bent lugs 46. These cushioning members 45 have serrated confronting faces 4'7 so as to more firmly grip the outer surface of a jar disposed between the two clamping members 36 and 37.
In the use of this device, the platform or table 10 is secured to one side of the stove by adjusting the clamping members 15 beneath the rim or downturned flange of the stove. The supporting leg or standard can be adjusted as to height by means of the set screw 26 and the bracing member 30 then engaged in the desired aperture 28 of the horizontal bracing member 2'7. The fixed clamping member 36 is mounted in fixed position by disposing the reduced end portion 39 in the aperture 35 and the handle 40 engaged within the slot 32 of the side wall 11. The movable clamping member 37 may initially have the outer end 42 disposed in the selected aperture 34 and the handle 41 moved away from the handle 40 with the pawl 44 resting on the rack 43. The jar may be placed between the two clamping members 36 and 37 either before or after it has been filled, the device being so constructed that, if desired, the jar may be placed between the clamping members when it is empty and then filled, or where the articles being canned are initially placed in the jars and the jars then placed in a hot container and the articles cooked, the hot jar with the articles therein may be placed between the clamping members 36 and 37, whereupon the movable clamping member 37 may be swung toward the fixed clamping member 36, this being accomplished by moving the handle 41 toward the handle 40 with the pawl 44 riding over the teeth 43. The desired pressure can be applied to the clamping member 37 by pressing the two handles 40 and 41 together or toward each other and then the cover or seal for the jar can be tightened to the desired degree.
It will be obvious from the foregoing that the cover or seal for the jar may be tightened while the material in the jar is Very hot and that the person using the device herein described will not burn or otherwise injure the hands during the canning operation. The platform 10 may, of course, be disposed in a horizontal position or, if desired, may by means of the adjustable brace 30, be tilted downwardly toward its outer end so that any water or liquid disposed on this platform will fiow away from the stove.
The fixed clamping member 36 is provided with an L-shaped bracing member 48 which is adapted to engage against the inner side of the extension 31 and, if desired, a bolt or securing member may be placed through the bracing member 48 and through the extension 31 so as to firmly hold the a clamping member 36 against horizontal and vertical movement.
It is, of course, understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.
