ANTIGLARE ATTACHMENT FOR LAMP BULBS Filed Sept. 24. 1931 MHPEAZF Patented Apr. 10, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ANTIGLARE ATTACHMENT FOR LAMP BULBS 2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in antiglare attachments for lamp bulbs, such as those used on vehicle headlights.
An object of the invention is to provide an attachment which is of relatively simple and durable construction and which may be applied to a conventional lamp bulb within any preferred form of headlight construction which will shield direct rays from the filament so as to effectively reduce the glare of the headlight on observers facing the headlight.
The improved attachment is so designed as to effectively reflect such light against the top of the reflector causing the light to be thrown downwardly and forwardly onto the road to increase illumination.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be made manifest in the following detailed description, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference is had to the accompanying drawing for an illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a sectional view through a headlight construction on a vehicle illustrating the device embodying the invention as having been applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation of a headlight bulb illustrating the device as having been applied thereto and may be considered as having been taken upon the line 2-2 upon Figure 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a lamp bulb illustrating the device in applied position, the device being shown in horizontal section.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout, the headlight illustrated is shown as having a casing 10, within which there is a reflector 11, and having a lens 12. The lamp bulb illustrated is of any conventional form and is indicated by the reference character 13. The device embodying the invention comprises a hemispherical cap 14 which may be formed of metal or any equivalent material and this cap is so designed as to fit snugly over the forward end of the lamp bulb 13. As a means for holding the cap in applied position, there is provided a U shaped clamp 15 having rearwardly extending converging arms 16 and 1'7 which resiliently engage the sides of the lamp bulb. This clamp is positioned over the forward side of the cap at a point above the center of the cap, as clearly shown in Figure 1. It may be secured in place as by soldering or brazing 18. Any equivalent clamp may be employed if desired. The interior face of the cap is preferably polished so as to present (Cl. Mil-48.6)
a light reflecting surface and may be given a mirror finish if desired. It will be noted that when the clamp is positioned so that the arms 16 and 17 extend real-wardly in a horizontal direction on the sides of the bulb, that the cap is positioned over the forward end of the bulb with its major portion below center. The metal cap being opaque acts as a shield so that direct light rays emanating from the filament will be shielded thereby and will not be glaring to an observer. These rays are reflected by the cap against the top of the reflector 11 and are thrown downwardly and forwardly through lens 12 onto the road. Consequently by the improved construction the glaring rays are cut out, at the same time they are reflected in such a manner that they are not lost but are usefully employed to assist in illuminating the road. It will be appreciated that the improved construction is of very simple design and may be easily manufactured and installed. In the event that the lamp 13 becomes broken or burnt out, the attachment may be subsequently used on a replacement lamp bulb.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. An antiglare attachment for lamp bulbs comprising a substantially hemispherical metal 85 cap presenting a light reflecting surface on its interior, and a pair of rearwardly extending resilient converging arms secured to the cap, the plane of the arms being arranged above the center of the cap and being arranged at an angle to 90 the central radius of the cap whereby when the construction is applied to a lamp bulb the positioning of the arms horizontally with respect to the bulb will position the cap with its major portion below the extreme forward end of the bulb. 95

An antiglare attachment for lamp bulbs comprising a substantially hemispherical metal cap presenting a light reflecting surface on its interior, and a U shaped iron clamp secured over the outer side of the cap and providing rearwardly extending convergent resilient arms, the plane of the clamp being arranged above the center of the cap and being arranged at an angle to the central radius of the cap whereby when the construction is applied to a lamp bulb the positioning of the arms horizontally with respect to the bulb will position the cap with its major portion below the extreme forward end of the bulb.
