LIP STICK HOLDER Filed Jan. 29, 1932 Patented A r. 3, 1934 UNITED STATES LIP STICK HOLDER Winfred 'r. Parkln, Providence, B. 1., minor to Theodore W. Foster & Bro. 00., Providence, R.
Application January 29, 1932, Serial No. 589,577
4 Claims. (Cl. 206-56) of this type which can be easily and quickly operl ated in a clock-wise or counterclockwise direction to effect automatic opening of the holder cover and projection of the lipstick therebeyond and retraction of the lipstick into the holder and closing of the cover. v
A still further object of the invention is to provide means for automatically latching the cover or closure cap in open and closed position, so that accidental opening thereof is prevented.
The invention has still further and other objects which will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.
In the drawing:-
Figure 1 is a side'elevation of the invention;
Figure 2 is a section on line 2--2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a detail view in side elevation showing the cover or cap with a part of its operating mechanism;
Figure 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing the closure latched in open position.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention a preferably cylindrical casing 1 is em ployed, flared at its outer end 2 and terminating in a circular flange 3. A semi-spherical or dome like member 4 has its lower end projecting into the. flange 3 and is provided with an out-turned lug 5 frictionally engaged in a cut-out 6 formed in the flange 3, although obviously any other suitable means may be provided for securing the dome 4 to the casing 1. The crown of the dome is provided with a circular opening '7 which latter is controlled by a cover or cap 8. This cap is of circular dished form and is provided with a pair of diametrically depending arms 9, each of which arms has a pintle 10 extending through an opening provided therefor at diametrically opposite points on the dome 4 whereby to mount the cap for swinging movements. One of the arms 9 is provided with an ofi-set forked projection 11 and between the furcations there is received a finger 12 which is preferably struck-out froma sleeve 13. From Figure 3 it will be seen that the projection 11 is angularlyrelated to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve 13, consequently upon axial movement of the sleeve it will be apparent that the cap 8 through the medium of the angular projection 11 and the arms 9 will be swung into and out of register with the opening 7 of the dome 4 thereby to cover and uncover same. f
The sleeve 13 has a bead 14 therearound which in one position engages a ring 15 secured to the casing 1 in any suitable manner. The sleeve 13 is further formed with a longitudinally extending or axial slot 16 and is surrounded by a second sleeve 1'7 which latter has a spiral slot 18 into which projects a pin 19 secured to a sleeve 20 which latter is within the sleeve 13. A head 21 has a flange 22 which is rigidly secured to the sleeve 13, the head 21 being knurled as shown in order to afford a finger grip for rotating same and thereby the sleeve 13. A coil spring 23 bears against the bottom of the sleeve 20 for the purpose of tensioning same so as to facilitate the projection of the sleeve 13.
In operation, with the parts in the position of Figures 1 and 2, it will be seen that upon clock: wise movement of the head 21 the sleeve 13 will be initially turned thereby causing its finger 12 to rock the projection 11 and swing the cap 8 to open position, and continued rotation of the cap 89 21 causes the lipstick carrier 20 by virtue of the pin and slot connections 19 and 18 to move outwardly thereby projecting the l pstick out of the holder. When the finger 12 has swung the cap 8 completely open, the finger will pass out of the furcations of the arm 11 so that the sleeve 13. can
rotate without further movement of the cap.
When the head 21 is rotated counter clock-wise the carrier 20 will be retracted in the casing and when the finger 12 of the sleeve 13 again enters 90 the furcations of the arm 11 the cap will be swung in a reverse direction to close the opening 7.
For the purpose of latching the cover in open and closed position a split ring 23 is employed which is attached to the sleeve 13 with its split 'in register with the projection 11 of one of the arms 9 so that when the cover is open and the sleeve 13 is in its projected position the adjacent side edge of the projection 11 will be engaged by the upper side-of the ring 23 thereby latching the cover in open position.- Likewise and as shown in Fig. 3 when the closure is in closed position the arm is contacted by the split ring 23 thereby latching'the closure in its said closed position. It will further be noted that the ring 15 seats on top of the sleeve 1'7 and engages the periphery ofthe sleeve 13 so as to facilitate movement of the latter.
Having thus described my invention what I 110 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A lipstick holder including a container having an outlet, a closure for controlling the outlet pivoted to the container, a forked member connected to the closure to move therewith, a rotary sleeve in the container having a projection movable into and out of engagement with the forked member, and a member extending peripherally of the sleeve and engaging the forked member to latch the closure in closed position, said member upon rotation of the sleeve to open the closure also engaging the forked member to latch the closure in open position.
2. A lipstick holder including a container having an outlet, a closure for controlling the outlet pivoted to the container, rotary means within the container, means operable by said rotary means for operating the closure and which upon predetermined rotation of the rotary means is rendered inoperative, and means carried by the rotary means and engageable with the closure for latching same in closed position and also in open position upon said predetermined rotation of the rotary means.
3. A lipstick holder including a container having an outlet, a closure for the outlet pivoted to the container and having an arm, rotary means in the container having means engageable with said arm, means whereby upon predetermined rotation of the rotary means said means of the rotary means will be disengaged from said arm of the closure, and a member disposed peripherally of the rotary means for engagement with the said arm to latch the closure in both open and closed positions.
4. A lipstick holder having a head on one end thereof formed with an opening, a closure within the holder for controlling said opening and having opposed arms one of which is bifurcated, means to pivotally mount the arms of the closure within the head, a rotary member in the holder having a projection to engage in the furcations of said arm, a lipstick carrier in the holder, an element carried by the rotary member and engaging said arm in open position of the closure for latching the closure, and means to effect rotary movement of the rotary member thereby to initially swing the closure to open position and to disengage the projection from said arm and to subsequently project the lipstick out of the opening.
