'J. H. RUBICAM- LIFTING -J'ACKS. v "No. 195,172. Patented Sept.1 1,1877."
I WITNESSES v I EN'FOR 4 ATTORN EY N.PETERS. PHOTO-LITHIJGRAPH'ER, WASHINGYQN, 04
UNITED STATES FFIGE.
JOHN H. RUBIOAM, OF WINCHESTER, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO WILLIAM'H. F. LENFESTEY AND JACOB S. HIXSON.
IMPROVEMENT IN LlFTlNG-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,172, dated September 11, 1877; application filed July 28, 1877.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. RUBICAM, of Winchester, in the county of Guernsey and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Lifting-Jacks; and I do hereby declare that the followingisa full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side view, in part sectional, of my jack and Fig. 2 is a top view thereof.
This invention has relation to improvements in lifting-jacks.
The nature of the invention will be understood from the following description, and is fully set forth in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, the letterA designates the base, and B a vertical standard erected thereon and supported thereby. This standard is immovable relative to the base, and is provided at its upper end with a slot, a, with a beveled lower end, I), for a purpose hereinafter more fully set forth.
0 designates the extensible section of my improved jack, having free endwise movement in relation to the standard B, to which it is confined by means of guide-loops D D, secured the one at or near the middle of the length of the said standard, and the other at its upper end. This standard and its extension are rectangular in cross-section, and the guideloops D D are of corresponding form, so that when it is extended the section 0 is at all times in contact with the standard.
The movable section, at the middle of its length, or thereabout, is provided with a lon-' gitudinal slot, 1), at the upper end of which is pivoted, by means of a pin or bolt, 0, a short arm, d. This bolt extends through the extension 0, and the arm aforesaid is suspended therefrom, and has free vertical vibration on said bolt.
F represents a vertically-vibrating lever,-
having its fulcrum on a pin, 6, extending through the slotted end of the standard B, and pivoted to the lower end of the arm 01 by means of a rule or other suitable joint, 6. When the extension 0 is at or near its lowest point of depression, the lever is at right angles to the arm, or nearly so; but when the power end of this lever is thrust down, thereby raising the said extension, the arm and lever are nearly on a line with each other, forming, the one with the other, a species of dead-center point, which prevents the casual flexing thereof, whereby the said extension is prevented from having casual endwise movement relative to the standard without other lock or stay.
Where a great weight is to be supported the power end of this lever may be engaged with a suitable stop or stay but usually this feature will be dispensed with.
The extension 0 will be provided with a rest or support, H, having an arm, h, upon which the axle of a wagon or any other object will be supported. This rest has a body-loop, i, of rectangular form, fitting loosely upon the said extension. The support will be vertically movable on the extension but when its prong h is placed under the object to be lifted--as, for instance, the axle of a vehiclethe loop t' will be slightly inclined from the horizontal plane, and will bind upon the extension, thereby holding it stationary.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in a lifting-jack, with the standard B having spaced loops D D and a verticallyvibrating lever, F, of the extensible section 0, provided with a looped step or support, H, having body-loop t' and arm h, said section 0 vertically movable in said loops D D, the slot 1) in said standard, and the vertically-vibrating arm d pivoted in said slot, and connected with said lever bya pivot-stop joint a, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. RUBIOAM.
