This invention relates to a holder for sandpaper, polishing cloths, or the like, and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a holder of such class by means of which sandpaper or the like may be used expeditiously and economically without likelihood of injury to the hands or fingers in such use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a holder of the character aforesaid including a pair of sections between which sandpaper or the like may be quickly and firmly gripped, the sections being secured together in such a manner that the material gripped therebetween may be l5 readily replaced when its efficiency has become impaired.
A further object of the invention is tc provide a sectional holder of the character aforesaid which is of extremely simple construction and which may be manufactured at a nominal cost for each holder.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more particularly described, and shown in the accompanying drawing, but it is to be understood that the drawing is to be considered as illustrative rather than limitative.
In the accompanying drawing in which like 3G numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the holder.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional View.
Figure 3 is a central longitudinal sectional View.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the lower section of the holder.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the numerals 38 and 40 respectively designate the uplG per and lower sections of the holder. The upper section 38 is formed centrally thereof with a circular opening 3 extending therethrough, and is further formed throughout the entire length of its lower face with a longitudinally extending recess 4 of rectangular cross section, the side edges of which terminate between the sides of the sections and the side extremities of the opening 3 as shown in Figure 2. Disposed within the recess 4 is a metal plate 39 which extends transj versely of the section 38 with its end faces in abutment with the side walls of the recess 4. The plate 39 is secured to the section 1 by means of suitable holdfast devices '7. Formed in the plate 39 is an opening 8 which is located midway 55.; between the ends of the plate. The wall of opening 8 is threaded. The plate 39 is so arranged with respect to the length of the section 38 that the opening 8 will be concentrically arranged with respect to the opening 3.
The lower section 4i) is formed with a recess 50 2'? similar to and oppositely disposedwith respect to recess 4. Midway between the side extremities ci the section 40, the recess 27 therein is formed in its bottom wail with a groove 41 which extends throughout the length of the section and 05 whichI is ci arcuate contour in cross section. Extending transversely ci the section 40 is a metallic plate 42 having its end faces in abutment with the side walls of the recess 2*?. The plate 42 is ci the same length and of greater width than 'I0v plate 39. The side edges of plate 42 are offset with respect to the side edges of plate 39 and plate 42 is formed in a side edge face thereof a notch 43, an inner portion of which is adapted to be brought into registry with the opening through the plate 39 when the secticns 38 and 40 are assembled. The plate 42 is anchored to section 40 by the holdiast devices 7l. 'The sections 40 and 38 are detachably secured together by means of an element 43 having left 80 hand threads which is in threaded engagement with the threaded wall of the opening in the plate 39 and which extends through the notch 43 in the plate 42. The element 43 is provided at its lower end with a head 44 for abutment against 85 the lower face oi the plate 42, and Ais provided at its upper end with a knurled gripping element 45. Owing to the left hand threads of the element 43', the same may be tightened by rotating it in a clockwise direction, and loosened by rotating it in a counter-clockwise direction.
The plates 39 and 42 are iiush respectively with the inner faces oi the sections 38, 40 and the thickness thereof corresponds to the depth of said recesses.
Suitably secured to and extending throughout the lower ci outer face of the section 40 is a cushion element 13 formed from some suitable material such as cork, against which a portion of sandpaper or the like, indicated at 14 is adapt- 100 ed to be positioned. In the use of the holder the section 40 is seated on the material 14 centrally with respect to the side edges ci the latter. The portions of the material 14 which project from the section 4C are then extended upwardly along 105 the side faces of section 40, thence inwardly along the upper or inner face of section 40 and upon the end portions of plate 42, as clearly shown in Figure 2. The section 38 is then positioned in engagement with the portions of the material 110 which is extended upon the inner face of the section 40. The section 38 is then moved longitudinally of the section 40 to bring the notch 43 into engagement with the threaded element 43. When section 38 is superimposed with re spect to section 40 and element 43 extended into notch 43, the end portions of the plate 39 will seat upon the portions of the material 14 which are arranged in plate 42. The sections 38 and 40 are tightly clamped together by the headed element 43 engaging with the wall of the opening 8 and with the head of such element abutting the lower face of plate 42. This arrangement provides substantially throughout the inturned portions of the material 14 a direct wood grip therefor, because the plates do not extend to the sides of the sections of the holder.
What I claim is:-
A holder for an abrading element comprising a pair of superposed sections for clamping therebetween opposite inturned portions of said element, each section having concentrically of its inner face a lengthwise extending recess of rectangular cross section opening at the ends thereof, the side walls of one recess aligning with the side walls of the other recess, the upper of said sections being formed centrally thereof with an opening extending from its outer face to and communicating with the recess in its inner face, an upper metallic plate disposed in alignmentI with the dialnetric center of said opening, extending transversely of, anchored in and having its ends abutting the side walls of the recess in the upper section, said plate being formed centrally thereof with an opening arranged in concentric relation to said other opening and having its wall threaded, a lower metallic plate extending transversely of, anchored in and having its ends abutting the side walls of the recess in the lower of said sections, said plates opposing each other and ilush with the inner faces of said sections, said lower plate provided at a side edge thereof with a notch adapted to have a part of the wall thereof align with the opening in said upper plate, the bottom wall of the recess in the lower section provided centrally thereof and from end to end with a lengthwise extending groove, and means carried by said upper section and coacting with said threaded wall, notch, lower plate and groove for detachably locking said sections in clamping position whereby uninterrupted portions of and extending from one end to the other end of said inner faces will be clamped directly against said inturned portions of said element.
