ANDREW H. FARMEB, OF OAK LEVEL, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT INCOLTER AND PLOW-STOCK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,665, dated August 28, 1877; application filed May 14, 1877.
are as follows:
In the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a side view of the colter and stock, showing also the manner of attaching the same to a beam. Fig. 2 is a side view of a shovel or share which may be used with the stock.
The colter A has a cutting-edge, a, nearly straight, and a curved back, b. The cuttingedge is serrated, the teeth thereof inclining downward, and horizontal grooves c extend backward from the several notches between the teeth.
This construction adapts the colter to easily sever large tough roots encountered in plowing, and the teeth are rendered self-sharpening, by reason of the notches and grooves between them, which wear back or deeper by friction with the furrow-slice.
The point d of the colter enters a recess in the point of the stock B, and the middle of its back 6 is held between ears f, which project from the stock at the bend or angle g of the same.
A right-angular arm, h, which is formed on the upper end of the colter, and projects forward of its cutting-edge, passes throughrthe beam 0, and is secured by a screw-nut, i. The stock B is also provided with a right angular arm, is, and straight stem or arm l, by which it is similarly attached to the beam.
The arm h of the colter, and the ears f formed on the stock, serve to prevent the colter being twisted or broken by torsional action.
The colter is, notwithstanding, light, and cheaply constructed.
Besides the function of the ears f in holding the back of the colter, as above stated, they serve to strengthen the stock .at its angle, without adding materially to its weight or cost.
I show in Fig. 2 a shovel or share adapted for use with the stock B, when it is desired to provide a light implement for furrowing or cultivating crops growing in rows.
What 1 claim is- In combination with the earsfat the angle having a convex back, and the right-angular arm projecting forward of the cutting-edge, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
. ANDREW FARMER.
