My invention relates to improvements in gas stoves, the primary" object of which is to provide a means of lighting any of the burners automatically whenthe valve; which turns on the gas to the burner is operated.
My invention includes a particular cam means operabl with the gas valve having a nature to operatgand and to hold a lighter valve open for a pre etermined period of time in the operation of the gas valve, the purpose of which is to permit the gas to have time to flow to the burner before the lighter gas valve is shut off to insure lighting'of the burner automatically when the valve is opened.
It is also a feature of my invention to provide a simplified operating rod means which is removable in a manner to assemble or disassemble the same in conjunction with the standard parts of the ordinary gas stove and to permit the same to be adjusted. This includes an adjustable bracket member which is formed with bracket extension portions having slidable adjustments and a bifurcated portion for the operation of the lighting rod.
The lighting mechanism includes a strap having a cup adapted to set on the lighter button and carrying a tubular portion on the opposite end which is adapted to adjustably-and remdvably receive the lighter rod which is operated by the valve cams.
An important feature of my invention resides in the operation of the oven burner which includes a double cam means which operate in synchronism, one cam operating the lighter rod and the other cam operating a gas valve which directs a flow of gas adjacent the lighter and extending to the burner to carry a lighting flame to the oven burner, the lighting flame going out as the burner valve is opened and after the oven burner is lit. The lighting of the. oven may also be accomplished by the lighter gas valve cam operating in conjunction with an arm which is. attached to the valve stem and which operates the independent valve, directing the independent flow of gas to the lighter tube for the oven,

A further object of the invention resides in an air valve for the burner including tubular means extending through the air chamber of the burner tube arm which is adapted to direct the 1928, Serial No. 251,848 ly 20, 1931 flow of gas into the constricted portion of the burner tube arm, carrying the gas through a tube which shields the flow of the same through the air mixing portion of the burner arm tube.
. These features, together with other objects and details of my invention will be more clearly and fully set forth in the specification and claims which I will endeavor to more clearly define.

The oven burner E of my gas stove is illustrated in its relative position within the oven portion of the stove and this burner is adapted to be automatically lit by the lighting mechanism D in conjunction with an auxiliary lighting valve and tube mechanism F which will be more fully and clearly hereinafter described.
My gas stove A is provided with the ordinary gas feed pipe which extends along the front of the open shelf 11 which includes the burners B, all of which is of ordinary well known construction. The feed pipe 10 supportsthe ordinary gas burner valves 12 which are provided with operating handles 13.
I provide the automatic lighting mechanism D which is adapted to operate the pilot light C and this includes individual cam members 14 attached to the valve stem and operable therewith by each of the valves 12. i
The cams 14 are attached in a manner so that the camoperating surface 15 depends and is elongated with a straight portion 16. These cams are adapted to operate the lighter rod 17 of the mechanism D which extends along below the pipe 10 and the ends of which are guided by the adjustable brackets G which engage with the feed pipe 10.
The adjustable brackets G are formed with a bracket member 18 adapted to engage about the pipe 10 to which I adjustably secure a bracket member 19. A second bracket and guide member 20 is adjustably held to the bracket member 19 through the slot 21 in the member 19 and the screw 22 which extends through the slot. The bracket members G are adapted to be set in a manner so as to guide the ends 17' of the rod 18 so that it may be operated uniformly by the cams 14 of the valves 12. v
The lighting mechanism D includes a strap member 24 which is provided with a tubular portion 25 through which the rod 17 extends and by means of the set screw 26 the rod is held adjusted to the strap member 24. The strap member 24 has a cup portion 27 which fits over the pilot lighter button 28. The strap member 24 may be slotted at 29 to extend on either side of the pipe 30 of the pilot lighter C.
Each of the valves 12-is provided with a cam 14 adapted to operate the rod 17 and in turn through the strap member 24 the pilot light C is operated simultaneously with the operation of the valves 12. The elongated straight surface 16 of the cams 14 on'the operating edge 15 hold the rod 1'7 depressed long enough to keep the button 28 open a sufiicient length of time to permit the gas to flow from the valve 12 to the respective burner B. Thus the burner B is automatically ignited by the pilot light C in the operation of the valve handle 13. It is important that the cams 14 have the long operating surface 16 to hold the 7 pilot light on long enough to permit the burner fined within an inclosure beneath the oven, I
provide an auxiliary gas feed tube 33 in the lighting mechanism F. This tube 33 is connected by the valve 34 with the main feed pipe 10 of my gas stove A and by means of a .cam 35 which is held on the upper portion of the stem of the valve 12, as illustrated in Figures 7 and 9, as the handle 13 of the burner gas valve 12 is operated, the valve 34 for the auxiliary feed 33 is operated, at the same time the cam 14 on the lower end of the stem of the valve 12 of the oven burner gas valve is operated, so that these two cams 14 and 35 are operated in synchronism, one operating the rod 17 of the mechanism D, while the other operates the valve 34. I

The auxiliary lighting mechanism F is provided with an adjustable extending lighting tube 36 which is held by the set screw 3'? adjustably and as an extension of the tube 33, and which is provided with lighting openings 38 extending to the burner E. The openings 38 are placed in aposition so that when the flame from the-pilot light C is extended they will light the gas from the auxiliary tube 33 through the openings 38 and direct a lighting flame which will run along the openings to the burner E, so that the burner E will be ignited from the auxiliary gas feed tube 33.
The auxiliary valve 34 may be in the form of the valve 40 having a ratchet operating arm 41 which is operated by the arm 42 projecting from the valve 12, as illustrated in Figure 10. The valve 40 is of such a nature as to be provided with a spring43 which isadapted to close the valve automatically after it has been opened in the operation of the arm 42 against the ratchet arm 41. The ratchet pawl 41 is held by a suitable spring 44 into the normal position illustrated in Figure 10 and is connected to the stem 45 of the valve 40 which operates the valve proper by rotating in a direction to open the valve 40 when the arm 42 engages against the pawl 41 in the opening movement of the valve 12, as indicated by the arrow in Figure 10. However, as the valve 12 is shut off and the arm 42 moves in closing position then the ratchet pawl 41 permits the arm 42 to slip back of the same into operative position, as illustrated in Figure 10, Without opening the valve 40. Thus by means of this ratchet valve 40 which automatically closes itself directly after it has been turned on by the arm 42, gas is directed to the auxiliary feed pipe 33 to direct gas only to the lighting openings 38 for the burner E in the opening operation of the burner valve 12.
The mechanism described heretofore such as in the valve 34 is such as to cause the gas to be directed to the auxiliary pipe, both in the opening and the closing operation. There are some cases where the valve 40 is preferred over the valve 34, however, the valve 34 is simple in operation and may be used equally well in carrying out the principles of my invention.
In place of the strap member 24 it may be preferred to use the yoke member I which is provided with a cup 47 similar in function to the cup 27 and strap arms 48 which extend in the form of a yoke to the tubular member 49 which is similar to the tubularmember 25. This yoke is adapted to support the operating rod 1'7 and functions in place of the strap member 24.
My gas stove is provided with an air chamber 2 J as illustrated in Figures 12 to 15 inclusive. This chamber is preferred in the operation of my automatic lighting means for the reason that it includes the essential elements to provide the proper mixture of the gas to direct the gas to the burners B in the proper manner. The chamber J is positioned in the burner arm 50 which extends to the burners B and E and includes a 1 distance into the burner arm tube 50, as illustrated in Figure 12. The tubular member 51 is formed with air inlet openings 54 staggeredly arranged in the tubular'member 51 and adapted to draw air from the mixing chamber 53 and in a short portion of the burner arm by means of the gas coming by force from the burner jet 55. i
* The chamber J is an important feature in carrying out my automatic lighting means as hereinbefore described because it is necessary to provide the burners B and E with such means of directing the gas to the small portion of the burner arm 50 without back-currents in the enlarged mixing chamber 53. The restricted tube 51 extending from the plate 52 permits the gas jet 55 which leads from the feed pipe 10 -to direct a fine stream of gas under pressure through the pipe 51, setting up an intensified vacuum, causing air to be drawn in through the openings 54 and forcing the mixture of the air with the gas from the tube 51. Thus more uniformly mixing thegas and air in the proper proportions 'and preventing the back-firing of E and provides a more eflicient mixing of thegas and air so that a smaller amount of gas is necessary in the operation of the burners B or E,thus giving a construction to my gas stove A wherein a more economical means of operation is provided.
My gas stove includes the features set forth and I have found that each of these features eo-operate together in such a manner as to provide a gas stove of a very desirable nature, having the safety means of preventing the burners from being turned down without being lit, protecting children in the home and overcoming the back-firing of the burners or small explosions, particularly in lighting the oven which are so apparent where the gas is turned on and the burner is not lit at the proper time. Each burner is automatic and can be operated by one hand, the burner in the oven lighting just as readily as any of the burners B. The easily attached and adjusted members are also an im portant feature of my invention.
Inaccordance with the patent statutes I have described the principles and particular construction of the elements and combination of the parts of my gas stove and while I have illustrated a particular formation, I desire tohave it understood that the same are only illustrative of a therefor, a valve for said auxiliary gas feed tube,
and means for simultaneously operating said gas feed valve with the pilot light valve.
2. An automatic lighting. means for gas stoves comprising burners, valves for said burners, a pilot light,'a valve for said light, an operating rod extending adjacent the burner valves, cam means for engaging said rod carried by the burner valves, adjustable means connecting said rod with the pilot light valve, and means for holding the latter in relatively adjusted position,
said rod being entirely supported by said adjustable means.
3. An adjustable removable lighting means for a gas stove comprising burners, valves for said burners, a pilot light, a valve for said lightja sliding strap adapted to engage said valve, a rod adjustably supported by said strap adjacent the burner valves of the gas stove, cams carried by said burner valves including an extended operating surface of a uniform nature to operate said rod to hold said pilot light in operative position for an extended period during the operation of said burner valves to readily light the burners of the gas stove. f
4. A gas stove comprising a series of shelf burners, an oven burner, a pilot light, burner valves, adjustable means for automatically operating said pilot light by the operation of the burner valves, and an auxiliary gas feed tube for the lighting of the oven burner operable only during the operation of the-oven burner gas valve.
5. An automatic lighter for the oven of a gas stove including burners, an oven burner, burner valves, an auxiliary gas feed tube, a pilot light, and means for operating said auxiliary gas.,feed tube and pilot light simultaneously with the operation of the gas valve for said oven burner.
6. An automatic means for lighting an oven burner including an auxiliary gas feed tube'to said burner from the main gas feed pipe, a valve for said burner from the main gas feed pipe, an auxiliary valve in said auxiliary gas feed tube, a pilot'light, and means for operating said pilot light and said auxiliary gas valve simultaneously to direct a lighting fiame to the oven burner only during the lighting of the same.
' '7. Means for automatically lighting an oven burner of a gas stove including an oven burner valve, an auxiliary gas feed .tube having a valve, and automatic means for operating the latter in conjunction with a pilot light valve during the opening of the oven burner valve only.
8. A gas stove including burners, valves for said burners, a pilot light for lighting the burners, means for operating said pilot light including a strap member having a cup on one end for engaging the pilot light valve, a tubular member on the other end, a rod adjustably supported within said tubular member, and earns for operating said rod and carried by the burner valves to operate said pilot light to automatically light any of the burners by turning on the gas valve to the respective burners.
9. An automatic means for lighting the burners of a gas stove including burners, valves for said burners, a member adapted to be cupped over the valve of a pilot light, a rod adjustably carried by said member, cams for engaging said rod carried by each of the burner gas valves, and adjustable bracket membersfor the ends of said rod adapted to hold said rod in adjustment adjacent each of said cam members.
10. The combination of a'gasstove having a cooking top burner and an oven burner, the latter being in an enclosure beneath the oven, a gas supply line leading to the cooking top burner and to the oven burner, a valve in said, gas supply line for each burner, an igniting device remote from said burners, and means for automatically igniting any of said burners from said igniting device by the operation of its respective burner valve, including an auxiliary burner intermediate the oven burner and said igniting device charged with gas through anauxiliary feed tube direct from said gas supply line by operation of the oven burner valve, said auxiliary burner and its feed tube being disposed adjacent to the oven burner and when so charged being directly ignited from said igniting device and serving to ignite the oven burner.
11. The combination set forth in claim 10, in which the oven burner has a mixing tube and the oven burner valve is located between the gas supply line and'said mixing tube, and in which the auxiliary burner is supplied with gas by an auxiliary gas feed tube receiving gas from the supply line at the supply side of the oven burner mixing tube.
12. In a gas stove, the combination of an oven burner in an enclosure beneath the oven, a gas through a line supply line, an oven burner valve for admitting gas from said line to the oven burner, a pilot light remote from the oven and said enclosure, and means for automatically igniting the oven burner from said pilot light upon operation of the oven b rner valve including flame-transmitting means mending from a point outside said enclosure but remote from said pilot-light to a point within said enclosure and adjacent to the oven burner, adapted to be ignited by said pilot light and serving to ignite the oven burner, said flametransmitting means being charged with gas from an auxiliary gas feed tube controlled by the oven burner valve.
13. In a gas stove, the combination of an oven burner in an enclosure beneath the oven, a gas supply line leading to the oven burner, an igniting device remote from the oven and said enclosure, flame-transmitting means extending from a point outside said enclosure but remote from said igniting device to a point inside said enclosure and adjacent to the oven burner adaptedto be ignited by said igniting device and serving to ignite the oven burner, said flametr'ansmitting means being supplied with gas through an auxil'ary gas feed tube, and an oven burner valve controlling the delivery of gas from said supply line to the oven burner and also to the auxiliary gas eed tube, whereby the flametransmitting means is directly charged with gas auxiliary to the: oven burner.
14. In a gas stove, in combination, cooking top burners, an oven burner in an enclosure beneath the oven, a gassupply line leading to the cooking top burners and the oven burner and having a valve for each burner, an igniting device in the 000 ing top area for igniting the cooking top burners, and flame-transmitting means extending from a point outside said enclosure but remote from said igniting device to a point inside said enclosure and adjacent to the oven burner, supplied with gas by an auxiliary line connecting to said gas supply line, said flame-transmitting means, when charged with gas, being adapted to be ignited by said igniting device and serving to -ignite the oven burner.
15. In a gas stove, in combination, an oven burner in an enclosure beneath the oven, a gas supply line or manifold, an oven burner valve controlling the delivery of gas from said supply line to the oven burner, a pilot light remote from the oven and said enclosure, an auxiliary pilot burnerbextending from a point outside said enclosure but remote from said pilot light to apoint insidesaid enclosure and adjacent to the oven burner, adapted to be ignited by flame from said pilot light traversing the intervening space to said auxiliary pilot burner and serving to igpipe from said gas supply line to-said intermediate burner in-which the passage of gas to the intermediate burner is controlled by the oven burner valve. I
16. In a gas stove, in" combination, cooking top burners, an oven burner in an enclosure beneath the oven, a gas supply line connecting with said burners and having a valve for each burner, a constantly burning pilot light in the cooking top area, and means operated by any of said valves for automatically igniting the burner of such valve from the pilot light, including flame-transmitting means extending from the oven burner within said enclosure to a point outside of said enclosure but remote from said pilot light and adapted to be ignited by flame from said pilot nite the oven burner, and an auxiliary gas feed light traversing the intervening space to said I fiame-transmitting means, said flame-transmitting means being charged with gas by an auxiliary gas feed tube connecting to said gas supply line.
17. In a gas stove, in combination, an oven burner in an enclosure beneath the oven, a gas supply line outside the oven, the oven burner having a mixing tube receiving its gas from said supply line, a pilot light remote from the oven and sa d enclosure, flame-transmitting means extending from a point outside said enclosure but remote irom said pilot light to a point inside said enclosure and adjacent to the oven burner adapted to be ignited by flame from said pilotlight traversing the intervening space to said flame-transmitting means for igniting the oven burner, said flame-transmitting means being charged with gas through an auxiliary line conin claim 17, including means whereby gas will be automatically admitted to said auxiliary line by operation of the oven burner valve.
