The mechanism for controlling the output of It is the principai object of the invention to the gasoline is contained within a receptacle in- '5 provide a vending machine-that will automatidicated in its entirety by the numeral 11 which is cally dispense a liquid upon the insertion of a Secured to the body of the gasoline pump and coin of the proper character. directly beneath the receptacle 11 is the coin box It is a further object of the invention to pro- 12 of the usual construction and provided with vide means whereby the quantity of liquid dislooking means to prevent the unauthorized 10l pensed will Vary according to the changes in obtainment of thel coins withinlthe receptacle. pricesof the liquid. It is to be within the member 23 for reciprocating the arm understood that the present device may be used 31 as the member 23 rotates. The reciprocafor vending liquids of all character, but for the tion of the arm 31 moves the segment-shaped purposes of illustration, the invention is to be gear 34 which opens the valve 29. It is to be 45 described for use with gasoline tanks. the cam-shaped member 19 to also rotate. The grooved member 23 is rotated through the medium of the gears 21 and 22 and the curved portion of the arm 31 moves within the groove 33 thereby opening the valve 29 within the discharge tube 30 of the pump. As soon as the member 19 has completed one revolution, or until it reaches the position disclosed in Figure 2, the brake arm 24 will be urged outwardly by means of the tension spring 25 for engagement with the out-out portion 23 in the member 19, thereby acting as a brake and stopping further rotation of the member 19 and its associated parts.
Since the price of gasoline often varies or is changed to meet economic conditions, it is important that means be provided to dispense the gasoline in accordance With the varying changes in prices. This is accomplished by a mechanism which retards the rotation or speeds up the rotation of the cam-shaped member 19. The adjusting mechanisrn is indicated in its ent'irety by the letter B.
Rotatably Secured to the shaft 36' of the small gear 17 is a toothed wheel 37 which is adapted to rotate upon the rotation of the gears 14, 16 and 17. -Closely associated with the toothed wheel 37 are a pair of arms 38 pivoted at their outer ends as at 39, to the shaft 40. Pivoted to the arms 38 and also to the shaft 40 are a second pair of arms 41 which have engagement with the spring pressed arms 42. It is to be noted that the arms 41 have a bayonet slot pivotal connection with the shaft 40 so that as they are urged outwardly they will assume a nearly horizontal position.
A means is provided for adjusting the tension of the springs 43 carried by the arms 42 which includes a pair of adjusting nuts 44 which urge the perpendicularly disposed member 45 either inwardly or outwardly. The member 45 is guided within the slot 46 positioned in the shaft 40. A second perpendicularly disposed member 47 is maintained parallel with said member 45 for retaining the tension springs 43 within their housing.
From the above description it will be noted that the adjusting nuts 44 may be moved to either increase or decrease the pressure on the springs 43 and since as above noted, the speed with which the member 19 rotates controls the length of time that the valve 29 remains open, it is the function of this mechanism to either increase or retard the rotation of the member 19. Upon the insertion of a coin of the proper character, the brake 24 is released and the gears are rotated thereby causing the rotation of the cam member 19. As the gears rotate the toothed Wheel 37 is also caused to rotate and the teeth of the wheel become engaged with the arms 38, thereby urging them outwardly toward the right and downwardly against the pivotal Connections. As the arms 33 and 41 move outwardly, they become engaged with the tension arms 42 and should the pressure on the springs 43 be increased, the member 19 will be forced to move at a slow rate of speed thereby allowing the valve 29 to remain open a great length of time. I-Iowever, should the pressure on the spring 43 be decreased, it will become apparent that there is less pressure upon the Wheel 31 and its associated gearing thereby causing the member 19 to rotate at a comparatively rapid rate of speed and assuring that the valve will remain open only a short period of time.
As the price of gasoline increases the attendant should loosen the adjusting nuts 44 so that the member 19 will rotate rapidly and like- Wise as the cost of gasoline decreases, tighten the adjusting nuts 44 so that the member 19 revolves slowly.
A means is provided for the rejeotion of fraudulent coins or coins not the equivalent of the weight of standard United States money. Referring to Figure 3 it Will be noted that the coin passes through the slot 43 and downwardly within this slot until it reaches the scales 49. The
scales 49 are Constructed with a weighted member -50 -beneath one side thereof and pivoted at 51. Should the coin be lighter than the standard weight of the coin of its character, it will pass downwardly over the scales into the slot 52, and then into another slot where it will be returned to the purchaser. Should the coin be of the standard type, it will cause the scales 49 to assume a nearly horizontal position and then pass down through the slot 53 and into the coin receptacle.
In the Operation of the above device a coin is deposited Within the slot 54 and passes over the scales whereupon it is either allowed to deposit in the coin receptacle or be rejected. The path of the coin is clearly disclosed in Figure 2 of the drawing and if it is desired a plurality of scales may be employed throughout the course of the travel of the coin. As the coin reaches the position denoted by the numeral 55 it is engaged with the handle 56. The turning of the handle 56 forces the coin against the arm 26 of the brake member 24 thereby causing the disengagement of the brake With the out-out portion 28 of the member 19 permitting the member 19 to rotate. The valve control arm 31 is then moved forwardly in a manner above described, Opening the valve 29 and permitting the fiow of the gasoline from the tank 5 into the tank 8 Where it is dispensed into the waiting vehicle. As soon as the member 19 has completed one revolution, the brake 26 operates to stop the rotation of the member 19, thereby closing the valve 29.
From the above description it has become apparent that there is provided a means for automatically dispensing a liquid upon the insertion of a copper coin and also a means for varying the quantity of the liquid dispensed.
It is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and it is desired to cover by the following claims all such modifications as may be included within their scope.
I claimz- 1. In a vending machine, the combination with a liquid container having a valve for controlling the discharge of its contents, a wheel having a gear rotatable therewith, a member having a groove formed therein, a gear fixed to the member adapted to mesh With said gear, an arm having a part engaged the groove and having a geared connection with the valve, means for normally holding the wheel against rotation, a motor for driving the Wheel, and means for releasing the wheel holding means to cause the mothe arm for Opening and closing the valve.
2. In a vending machine, the combination with a liquid container having a valve for controlling tor to drive the Wheel and member to actuate 3145 the discharge of its contents, a spring motor, a
wheel rotated by the motor, a member having a groove therein, said member having geared connection with the wheel, a brake member engaged With the wheel for normally holding the same against rotation, an arm having a part slidable in the groove of the member and having geared connection With the valve, coin controlled means for actuating the brake member to release the wheel to rotate the member to operate the arm to open and close the valve.
3. In a vending machine, the combination with a container having a valve for controlling the discharge of its contents, a motor, a wheel rotated by the motor, a shoulder carried by the MITSUTO TAKESHITA.
