6 Claims.
This invention relates to connection devices and more particularly to devices for use with high tension currents.
It is an object of this invention to provide a `connection device to which a cable can be more Aor less permanently attached and connection to which from electrical devices such as transformers,.secondary cables, power apparatus and the like may be made.
t is also an object of the invention to provide a novel contact and cover plate arrangement for devices of the above described character.
A further object is to provide a novel connection plug.
A still further object is to provide a connection device which shall be quickly operable and economically constructed, and which eliminates all necessity of Working on live lines, the device having plug receiving contacts to which connection may be made from the electrical apparatus.
Still further objects will readily occur to those skilled in the art upon reference to the following description and the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 shows the connection device with a portion of the cover plate removed.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of a detail.
Fig. 4 shows one type of connection plug in conjunction with the device.
Referring to the drawing, Fig. 1 shows. a cast iron box l0 having a plurality of buses 1l separated by partitions 12 of a suitable material. Connected to one end of each bus l1 is a conductor 13 projecting thru insulating members 14 and extending thru a pot head 15, the conductors 13 merging into a cable 16. The pot head 15 may be secured to the box by means of suitable bolts 17.
Disposed upon the box and connected thereto by means of bolts 19 is a cover plate 20 having a plurality of alternating arranged openings 21 therein, at each of which is secured by means of bolts 22, a threaded ring 23.
Bus bars 1l are insulated from the box 10 by means of the insulators 25 and have secured. thereto by means of bolts 26 a plurality of plug receiving contacts 27 surrounded by an insulating shell 28. Threaded upon the ring 23 is a coupling member 30 which is adapted to secure, in pipe coupling fashion, a dummy plate 31 or a plug 32 as may be desired, the coupling member 30 having eyes 34 which cooperate with eyes 35 on the dummy plate 31 and on the plug 32 to form padlock receiving means.
One of the features of this invention resides in the construction of plug 32 which, as shown in Fig. Il, comprises a two part insulating handle portion 36, a male contact member 37, a flange ring 38 secured to the lower portion of the insulating handleland a fuse 39, one of whose ends is 6 connected to the conductor 40 in a more or less conventional manner.
Tin the operation of the device, the dummy plates 31 are normally locked over the opening 21 so that access to the contacts 27 is prevented. 65 When connection to the box is desired, the padlock, not shown, is removed and a plug 32 is substituted for the dummy plate 31 whereupon contact 37 will engage 'contact 27 whereby electrical connection is made between conductor 13 and 70 conductor 40.
It will be understood that the pipe coupling shown is merely one form of convenient securing means and, if desired, a bayonet joint may be substituted therefor, without departing from the spirit of the invention. The same may be said of the plug member 32, since it is obvious that an unfused plug member may be connected to the device if desired.
It will also be noted that conductors 40 may 80 lead to electric apparatus such as transformers, power devices, etc., or it may form a part of a secondary cable, connection of which to cable 16 is desired.
It will be observed, therefore, that there has been provided a connection device of the character described which is simple of operation and economical of manufacture.
Now having described the invention and the preferred embodiment thereof, it is to be under.- stood that the said invention is to be limited, not to the specific details herein set forth, but only by the scope of the claims which follow:
1. In a connection box, a plurality of spaced, parallel, relatively insulated bus bars, a plurality of conductors entering said box at one end, each of which is connected to an end of a bus bar, a plurality of spaced upwardly projecting socket contacts on each bus bar arranged in staggered relation with respect to the contacts of adjacent bus bars, a cover secured to said box and having a plurality of openings therein each of which is aligned with one of said contacts, and a connector coupling means on said cover aligned with each opening.
2. In a connection box having relatively sealed walls, a plurality of spaced, parallel relatively insulated bus bars, a plurality of conductors entering said box at one end and connected to the bus bars, a plurality of spaced, upwardly project- 1,10
ing contacts on the bus bars, a cover secured and sealed to said box and having openings aligned with said contacts, an individual insulating shield member surrounding each contact and projects ing upwardly to the aligned cover opening, coupling means on said cover appurtenant each opening, and seals disposed over and normally closing said openings and removably maintained in closing position by the coupling means, the seals being removable and replaceable by connector plug members passed thru said openings and into electrical engagement with said contacts, and maintained in contact making position by said coupling means.

In an electrical connection box construction, in combination, a bus bar, a plurality of plug receiving electrical contacts thereon, an insulating shield for each of said contacts also carried by the bus bar, a Water tight container inclosing said bus bar and said contacts and having an opening aligned with each Contact, and coupling means appurtenant each opening enabling Water tight securing of desired members thereto While connection to each Contact may be made through its aligned opening if desired.
4. In an electrical connection box construction, Vin combination, a plurality of bus bars, a plug receiving electrical contact on each bar, an individual insulating shield for each of said contacts, a Water tight container' enclosing said bus bars and said contacts and having an opening aligned With the receiving portion of each of said contacts, said container being provided with a Water tight coupling appurtenant each opening.
5. Electrical connecting means including a connection box, a conductor thereWithin, contact clips carried by the conductor, said box having an opening in alignment With the clips, an insulating member carried by the conductor surrounding the contact clips and extending to the opening, the insulator also having an opening therein aligned with that in the box and with the contact clips, and having a portion partially blocking the opening in the box.
6. Electrical connecting means including a connection box, a conductor therewithin, contact clips carried by the conductor, said box having an opening in alignment with the clips, an insulating member surrounding the clips and spaced from the sides of the box, and extending to the opening in the box, said insulator having a portion partially blocking said opening, and also having an aperture in substantial alignment with said opening and with the contact clips, and extending to each. v
