8- Claims. (Cl. 24-205) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a safety removable fastener slide.
The invention has for an object the construction of an article as mentioned which is characterized by the fact that it is provided with an upper and lower spaced trapezoidal guide plates hingedly connected and an arrangement of a latch swivelly mounted on one of the guiding plates and adapted to latch the guide plates closed and itself operable by a handle used simultaneously for moving the slide and having a cam portion engageable in an opening in the guide plate preventing swiveling of thelatch except in a certain inclined position of the handle. When so arranged the possibility of accidental removal of a fastener slide is materially reduced.
As a still further object of this invention, it is proposed to project a prong from the cam and adapted'to engage through the opening the clamp the material between the guide plates so as to latch the fastener slide against moving thereon.
Still further it is proposed to provide an arrangement whereby the handle has a projection adaptedto pass the dead center so as to latch the handle in an inoperative position against free motion.
The invention still further proposes the construction of an article as mentioned which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The safety removable hook fastener'slide according to this invention comprises an upper trapezoidal guide plate 10 spaced from and hingedly connected at 11 with a lower trapezoidal guide plate 12. These guide plates have their longitudinal edges 13 bent towards each other for retaining their positions upon lines of hook fasteners as is general practice. A post is arranged between the guide plates 10 and 12 at the central portion of the larger ends of the guide plates and comprises a pair of slightly spaced post sections 14 upon the upper guide plate 10 and adapted to engage against the lower guide plate 12 acting as a stop to limit relative pivoting of these guide plates so as to form the space 15 between them, and a central post section 16 upon the lower guide plate 12 extending up between the post sections 14 above the upper face of the top guide plate 10 and said extended end being formed with an opening 1'7. The hinged connection between the upper and lower guide plates 10 and 12 is accomplished by a pintle pin 11 engaging through the post sections 14 and 16. In Fig. 5, the upper and lower guide plates are shown in the closed position while in Figs. 6-8 inclusive they are shown in the opened positions.
A latch 19 is swivelly mounted at 20 upon the upper guide plate 10 and is adapted to engage into the opening 17 for latching the guide plates in the closed position. A handle 21 is pivotally mounted upon the latch 19 and has a cam portion 22 in the vicinity of its pivot adapted to normally engage into an opening 23 formed in the upper guide plate 10 so as to prevent swiveling of the latch 19. It is only when the handle 21 is in a certain inclined position, the position shown in full lines in Fig. 5, that the cam 22 does not project into the opening 23 and consequently the latch may be swiveled. In any other position, as for example, the position indicated by the dot and dash lines in Fig. 5, and all other possible positions except the position shown by the full lines, the cam 22 extends into the opening 23.
A prong 24 projects from and is a continuation of the cam 22 and is so arranged as to be extendible through the opening 23 to engage the hook fasteners passing through the slide. When the handle 21 is in its closed positions as illus- 110 and dash lines illustrate the prong in its position extended between the guide plates. The handle 21has a portion 25 extending beneath a portion of the latch 19 to accomplish the pivotal mounting of the handle upon the latch. Furthermore, this portion 25 is provided with a projection 26 adapted to assume a position past the dead center when the handle 21 is inthe closed position shown in Fig. 1 so as to clamp the handle in said position. The projection 26 acts against the top surface of the guide plate 10 to accomplish pivoting.
In Fig. 10, a modified form of the invention has been disclosed which is substantially identical to the disclosure in the previous form except that there is no prong 24 projecting from the cam 22.
The operation of the device may be best understood by first considering it in the position shown in Fig. 1. This is the position it would assume y when locked or in a condition out of use upon the hook fasteners. The control slide may be moved back and forth by pivoting the handle 21 upwards to any convenient position. As is known when the slide is moved in onedirection it causes the engaging of the hooks and when moved in the other direction disengaging. If for any reason it is necessary to readjust the slide upon the hooks or when first engaging the slide on the hooks the slide must be opened. This is possible by pivoting the handle 21 into a position in which the cam 22 is free from the opening 23.
Then the latch 19 may be swiveled by moving the same around the point 20 as a pivot to disengage the latch from the opening 1'7. Now the upper and lower trapezoidal guide plates may be opened outwardly by pivoting around the pintle 11. The slide fastener may be closed by retracing the operations used in opening it.
While we have shown and described the preferred embodiment of our invention, it is to be understood that we do not limit ourselves to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modification coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:-
1. A safety removable hook fastenerslide, comprising upper and lower spaced trapezoidal guide plates hingedly connected at the central portion of the larger ends, a post between the guide plates at the central portion of the larger ends and comprising a pair of spaced post sections on the upper guide plate engageable against the lower guide plate to act as a stop for limiting closing movement of the guide plates and a central post section on the lower guide plate extending up between said spaced post sections and above the upper guide plate, an opening in the upper guide plate the extended end of the central post section being formed with an opening, a latch swiveled on the upper guide plate and adapted to ezigage in the opening in said central post section when the guide plates are in closed position, and a handle pivotally mounted on said latch and having a cam portion normally extending into the opening in the upper guide plate for limiting swiveling oi. the latch except in a certain inclination of the handle.
2. A safety removable hook fastener slide, comprising upper and lower spaced trapezoidal guide plates hingedly connected at the central portion of the larger ends, a post between the guide plates at the central portion 01' the larger ends and comprising a pair of spaced post sections on the upper guide plate engageable against the lower guide plate to act as a stop for limiting closing movement oi the guide plates and a central post section on the lower guide plate extending up between said spaced post sections and above the upper guide plate, an opening in the upper guide plate the extended end of the central post section being formed with an opening, a latch swiveled on the upper guide plate and adapted to engage in the opening in said central post section when the guide plates are in closed position, and a handle pivotally mounted on said latch and having a cam portion normally extending into the opening in the upper guide plate for limiting swiveling of the latch except in a certain inclination of the handle, the hinged connection between the guide plates being accomplished with a pintle pin extended through said post sections.
3. A safely removable hook fastener slide, comprising upper and lower spaced trapezoidal guide plates hingedly connected at the central portion of the larger ends, a post between the guide plates at the central portion of the larger ends and comprising a pair of spaced post sections on the upper guide plate engageable against the lower guide plate to act as a stop for limiting closing movement of the guide plates and a central post section on the lower guide plate extending up between said spaced post sections and above the upper guide plate, an opening in the upper guide plate the extended end of the central post section being formed with an opening, a latch swiveled on the upper guide plate and adapted to engage in the opening in said central post section when the guide plates are in closed position, and a handle pivotally mounted on said latch and having a cam portion normally extending into the opening in the upper guide plate for limiting swiveling 0f the latch except in a certain inclination of the handle, said handle having a section engaging beneath a portion of said latch and constituting the pivotal mounting of the handle.
4. A safety removable hook fastener slide, comprising upper and lower spaced trapezoidal guide plates hingedly connected at the central portion of the larger ends, a post between the guide plates at the central portion of the larger ends and comprising a pair of spaced post sections on the upper guide plate engageable against the lower guide plate to act as a stop for limiting closing movement of the guide plates and a central post section on the lower guide plate extending up between said spaced post sections and above the upper guide plate, an opening in the upper guide plate the extended end of the central post section being formed with an opening, a latch swiveled on the upper guide plate and adapted to engage in the opening in said central post section when the guide plates are in closed position, and a handle pivotally mounted on said latch and having a cam portion normally extending into the opening in the upper guide plate for limiting swiveling oi. the latch except in a certain inclination of the handle, said handle having a section engaging beneath a portion of said latch and constituting the pivotal mounting of the handle, and a projection from said portion of the handle adapted to assume a position past the dead center with lower guide plate to act as a stop for limiting closing movement of the guide plates and a central post section on the lower guide plate extending up between said spaced post sections and above the upper guide plate, an opening in the upper guide plate the extended end of the central post section being formed with an opening, a latch swiveled on the upper guide plate and adapted to engage in the opening in said central post section when the guide plates are in closed position, and a handle pivotally mounted on said latch and having a cam portion normally extending into the opening in the upper guide plate for limiting swiveling of the latch except in a certain inclination of the handle, said handle having a section engaging beneath a portion of said latch and constituting the pivotal mounting of the handle, and a projection from said portion of the handle adapted to assume a position past the dead center with the handle in its closed position so as to latch the handle thus, said projection being adapted to act against the upper face of the upper guide plate.
6. A safety removable hook fastener slide, comprising upper and lower spaced trapezoidal guide plates hingedly connected at the central portion of the larger ends, a post between the guide plates at the central portion of the larger ends and comprising a pair of spaced post sections on the upper guide plate engageable against the lower guide plate to act as a stop for limiting closing movement of the guide plates and a central post section on the lower guide plate extending up between said spaced post sections and above the upper guide plate, an opening in the upper guide plate the extended end of the central post section being formed with an openin a latch swiveled on the upper guide plate and adapted to engage in the opening in said central post section when the guide plates are in closed position, and a handle pivotally mounted on said latch and having a cam portion normally extending into the opening in the upper guide plate for limiting swiveling of the latch except in a certain inclination of the handle, and a prong projecting from said cam portion for engaging the hook fasteners passing through said slide.

A safety removable hook fastener slide, comprising upper and lower spaced trapezoidal guide plates hingedly connected at the central portion of the larger ends, a post between the guide plates at the central portion of the larger ends and comprising a pair of spaced post sections on the upper guide plate engageable against the lower guide plate to act as a stop for limiting closing movement of the guide plates and a central post section on the lower guide plate extending between said spaced post sections and above the upper guide plate, an opening in the upper guide plate, the extended end of the central post section being formed with an opening, a latch swiveled on the upper guide plate and adapted to engage in the opening in said central post section when the guide plates are in closed position, and a handle pivotally mounted on said latch and having a cam portion normally extending into the opening in the upper guide plate for limiting swiveling of the latch except in a certain inclination of the handle, said latch being located upon the narrow end of the upper trapezoidal guide plate.

A safety removable hook fastener slide, comprising upper and lower spaced trapezoidal guide plates hingedly connected at the central portion of the larger ends, a post between the guide plates at the central portion of the larger ends and comprising a pair of spaced post sections on the upper guide plate engageable against the lower guide plate to act as a stop for limiting closing movement of the guide plates and a central post section on the lower guide plate extending up between said spaced post sections and above the upper guide plate, an opening in the upper guide plate, the extended end of the central post section being formed with an opening, a latch swiveled on the upper guide plate and adapted to
