MEAT PACK Filed July 12, 1929' ATTORNEY preformed cakes or patties so Patented Dec. 22, 1931 UNITED STAT 155- PATENT OFFICE manna mmsiar, an. or 1mm, ifnw my -mn ZPAGK Application filed m 1a, 1929. Serial No. 317,122.
0 to cooking or other use thereof. The conrial, as paper, bent in zig-zag fashion and tained part' or filler of the improved pack is characterized by cakes or masses of the substance and a piece of flexible sheet matesuch cakes are airanged. This in. itself is not new. The noveltyin the presentinvention resides in providing the filler with a certain protective covering and the manner in which the filler is assembled with the carton or container.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the'improved pack, showing the container opened at one end and thepiece of sheet material partially Withdrawn in the act of withdrawing one of the cakes; lfFig. 2 is a right-hand end elevation there.- 0 vi Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the filler before c mpletion by application of a certain pro ing strip;
ed filler;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the filler and container after the fillerhas been introduced into the container;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view showing how the filler and container are interlocked; and
Fig. 7 is a-v'iew ofthe blank from which the said strip is formed.
Referring to Fig. 3, let 1 designate cakes or sections of the minced meat or other substance and 2 the piece of flexible sheet material, as paper, bent zig-zag fashion and having said cakes or sections contained in pockets or recessesB formed by such bending thereof. 'The pockets are each open, or have what I term mouths, opposite their respec- Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the complet-- I provide a strip tive bends, or in Fig. 3 at the top, and each isalso open at what I te'rm its sides (or in both directions lengthwise of the lines of the bending), so that the masses or cakes of said substance,'which if minced meat or the like Will: usually be sticky, are-exposed at such mouths andsides. In theexample only the alternate intervals between the walls of the material 2 formed by the zig-zag bending are formed'as said pockets, as shown, so that the pocket mouths exist only at one side (the upper side in Fig. 3) and not the opposite side of the body comprising-the said masses 1 and-bent sheet 2 and said masses are exposed thus forming pockets or recesses in which flle first side and not at said opposite sides;
this is not indispensable, but it is preferred in view of the manner to'be described in which the one-by-one delivery of the masses is referably effected. 1
so far described the masses 1 forming portions of the mentioned body are exposed at three sides thereof. I aim to protect said body against the handling incident to completing the packaging, with malformation of the masses and the adherence thereof to the hands especially if they consist of meat or the like sticky and/or plastic substance, and hence treat it asfollows:
The piece 2 is provided with an extension 4 (which may be an integral portion thereof), and this is made toreach over the mouths of the pockets, so as to cover the masses where they are exposed by them, being brought face to face with the masses so as to adhere thereto if they are sticky.
Further, to cover the sides of the pockets 5, the blank of which is shown in Fig. 7. This strip is bent around the said body so that its end portions cover said sides, being also brought face to face with themasses so as to adhere thereto if they are sticky and in that way preferably secured to said body; appear) bent around said body in suchmanner that its mid-portion opposes that one of. the end masses in the series or succession thereof from which the extension-4 of the 'piece2 reaches, p
The result of the foregoing is to produce. what I term a filler adapted to be readily it is (for a reason to entered into a carton or equivalent container 7 at what I term the mouth of the carton 10 and then drawing upon the said leading end of the piece 2 so that each mass or cake will be discharged in the manner illustrated by Fig. 1. (Said leadingend of piece 2 may be provided with a short extension 2a affording a convenient initial finger hold.) If only the alternate intervals between walls of the material 2 formed by the bending are utilized as pockets, each mass in discharging will do' so with its bottom side leading.
In order to prevent the filler from being withdrawn in this operation, due to adhesion between each cake or mass and the coverin here formed by the parts 2-4 and 6, the filler is secured in the carton by an interlock formed between them, say as follows:
The end-of the carton into which the filler is entered has a flap 8 (preferably two such flaps, opposite each other and also anotheror closing flap 9). The mid-portion of the strip has a lateral flap 10 (preferably two such flaps, opposite-each other). When the filler is fully entered the flaps 8 of the carton are first folded over the end-of the filler, then the flaps 1O ofthe filler are folded over the flaps 8, and finally the cover flap 9 is made to cover the flaps 8 and 10, it preferably havang a tab 9a to enter the carton between its opposite wall and the filler. Thus the filler will be securely locked against withdrawal and the withdrawal of the masses one by one may be effected without disturbing the parts 2-4 and 6 or more than the single mass intended. The piece of material 5 is preferably stifi', as rd-board. Thus its end portions form walls which adhere to the sides of the cakes, facilitate the entry of the filler into the carton and prevent malformation of the masses in the handling both incident to that operation and of the completed pack.
Having thus fully described my mventlon what I claim'isz' 1 p 1. An article of manufacture comprising a piece of sheet material bentzig-zag and thereby forming a succession of pockets, each pocket having an open nfouth opposite the corresponding bend in the piece and masses of adhesive substance to be packed occupying the'respective pockets, said piece having an extension reaching over said mouths and adhering to said masses, in combination with a container surrounding and closely embracing the succession of pockets from-end to end and having its end at the free end of said extension open, whereby said masses are sue cessively removable at said endof the container by drawing upon the end of the said piece adjoining the same.
2. An article of manufacture comprising bracing the article from end to end of the succession of pockets and having its end at the other end of said body open, whereby said masses are successively removable at said end of the container by drawing upon the end of said piece adjoining the same. n
3. In combination, a tubular carton and a filler therein comprising, with the substance to be packed adapted to be withdrawn from one end of the carton, a covering of sheet material for said substance adhering thereto and having an interlock with the carton opposing withdrawal from the latter of said covering with said substance. v
4. In combination, a tubular carton having a flap at one end and a filler in the carton comprising, with the substance to be packed adapted to be withdrawn from the other end of the carton, a covering of sheet material for said substance having a fia overlapping the first flap exteriorly thereof and thus opposing withdrawal from the carton of the coveringwith said substance.
5. An article of manufacture comprisin a piece of sheet material bent zig-zag an of sheet material adhering to the masses and including a piece of sheet material bent zigzag and. thereby forming a succession of ler comprising a succession of masses of adheslve substance-and a covering pockets occupied by said masses, in combination with a container surrounding and closely embracing the filler from end to end and having said covering attached thereto at one end of the filler and being open at the other end of the filler, whereby such masses are successively removable at the latter end of the container by drawing upon the adjoin ing end of the piece. A In testimony whereof I affix my signaturel HERBERT RUMSEY, JR.
