COMBINED FOUNTAIN PEN HOLDER AND HUMIDOR Filed April 23, 1950 III/IIIIIIII/I llllllfilllflllllllllllfllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllz ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 22, 1931 UNITED STATES EARLE L. OVINGTON, OF SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA COMBINED FOUNTAIN PEN HOLDER AND HUMIDOR Application filed April 23, 1930. Serial No. 446,590.
This invention relates to a desk or table fountain pen holder and humidor.
The invention has for its object the provision of a new article of manufacture of the indicated character, whereby to humidify the air in the presence of the nib of a fountain pen, to thus reduce evaporation of the ink, and also to prevent the ink from drying in the writing end of the pen, when the pen is not in use and is in the holder.
The nature of the invention and its distinguishing features and advantages will appear when the following specification is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which The figure is a vertical sectional View of a fountain pen holder and humidor constructed in accordance with the invention, a fountain pen being shown inserted in its holder; the holder and pen being shown in one position in full lines and in another position in dot and dash lines.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawing, an article of the indicated character will include a hollow body 10 of any preferred design or shape, and made of any preferred material. The said body 10 is therefore in the form of a container adapted to hold a quantity of liquid, preferably water, indicated at 11. The body 10 has a filling opening 12 which is closed by a removable stopper or plug 13. The bottom of the body 10 is provided with a pad 14'made of rubber, felt or any other suitable material to prevent the article from slipping when placed on the top of a desk or table. A tubular member 15 of tapering formation is connected to the container body 10 by a ball and socket joint 20, in order that the holder 15 may be swung to differentangular positions. The tubular member 15 constitutes a holder or receptacle for the writing end of a fountain pen, designated 17 It will be apparent that the fountain pen may be inserted into the holder 15, and that the extremity of the pen barrel adjacent the nib of the pen makes a tight fit with the holder keeping the moisture confined below the end of the pen barrel.
The ball of the joint 20 is of hollow construction so that the lower end of the holder 15 will be in communication with the interior of the container body 10. If desired, use may be made of a wick 21 which projects through the ball of the joint 20 and which is immersed in the water in the container body 10, as shown. The use of the wick 21 brings the water closer to the nib of the pen and at the same time allows the holder 15 to be adjusted to any desired angle, to suit the user of the pen. It is to be understood, however, that the wick 21 may be omitted, in which case the article will still operate as a humidor for the pen. When a wick is used, a relatively small opening may be provided in the ball of the joint 20, which will afford a wider range of adjustment of the pen holder 15.
It will be apparent that the nib of the fountain pen will be kept in a humid atmosphere produced by the water in the container body 10, which may evaporate for this purpose, when the pen is not in use and is in the holder 15. It follows therefore that by reason of the fact the nib of the fountain pen is kept in a humid atmosphere, the ink in the pen will not dry out, consequently, the pen will always be ready for use for writing, even after it has remained in the holder for a com paratively long time.
Claims:
1. A new article of manufacture comprising the combination of a tubular holder, a fluid container suitably united with the lower end of the holder so that it isopen to the interior of the container, and also so that the holder may be adjusted to different angular positions with respect to the container, said holder being adapted to receive and grip the writing end of a fountain pen, to form an airtight seal above the nib of the pen, and means immersed in the fluid in the container and leading into the lower end of the holder,
for the purpose of humidifyingthe air at the nib of the pen to keep the latter moist.
2. A new article of manufacture comprising the combination of a tubular holder, and
a liquid container suitably united With the lower end of the holder so that it is open to the interior of the container, and also so that the holder may be adjusted to different angu- LO lar positions with respect to the container,
said holder being adapted to receive and grip the Writing end of a fountain pen, to form an airtight seal above the nib of the pen, and said liquid container serving to humidity the air 1 at the nib of the pen to keep the latter Moist.
