Description

J. GUTMANN Dec. 22, 1931.
BOURING LIP FOR CONTAINERS AND METHOD OF APPLYING SAME Filed July 26, 1950 mu I A Patented Dec. 22, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JESSE G'U'IMANN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO FERDINAND GUTMANN & O0 01 BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK POURHVG LIP FOR CONTAINERS AND METHOD OF APPLYING SAME 'Application filed July 88, 1980. ierlal l io. 470,862.
My invention relates to pouring lips for containers and a method of applying same to containers and it is my object to provide bottles, jars, cans and the like with a pouring lip which will control the flow and enable drops to be counted and which will prevent the contents running down the outside of the container after pouring so that the outside of the container will present a clean appearance and be sanitary. The invention is especially applicable to containers provided with screw caps as it keeps the threads clean and free from foreign matter so that the cap may be easily applied and removed. In practicing my invention the'pouring lip is assembled with the cap and aflixed to the container at the same time the cap is applied and as the cost of the pouring lip is very small the cost of packaging is not materially increased.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a view of a container with my pouring lip, slightly exaggerated for clearness of illustration; Fig. 2 a plan view of a pouring lip; Fig. 3 a sectional view of a cap with a pouring lip therein ready to be placed on a container; and Fig. 4 a side view of a container, the top edge partly broken away, ready to receive the pouring lip.
The invention comprises a thin washer 1, best shown in Fig. 2, which is adhered to the top surface of the container mouth 2. The washer is preferably made of a transparent material inert to the container contents and its outside diameter is slightly larger than the outside diameter of the container mouth so that when pouring the contents will run over a thin, sharp edge and'will not run down the outside of the container, the amount of the extension of the pouring lip beyond the container mouth may be varied as occasion requires. The diameter of the central opening in the washer is preferably approximately the same as the inside diameter of the container mouth.
In commerical ractice the cap 3 has a gask'et 4 inside to c ect the seal and the washer- 1 is placed inside the cap, over the gasket, but not necessarily adhering thereto as it may adhere slightly to prevent displacement during handling in the capping machine. After the containers are filled they pass un' der a gumming machine which a plies a layer of suitable adhesive, prefera ly one not affected by the container contents, to the top surface of the container mouth. The adhesive coated containers then pass to the capping machine where the caps are driven home to seal the containers. The washer 1 will then adhere to or unite with the top surface of the container so that when the cap is removed the pouring lip will remain on the container.
When the pouring lip is applied in this manner it is preferably composed of a springy material which will snap back into a flat, or nearly flat, shape after the distortion incident to inserting it into and removing it from the cap. I
Adhesion between the washer and the top surface of the container mouth may also be efiected by a suitable solvent instead of an adhesive, by coating the washer with an ad hesive material and applying moisture, by the application of heat, or by other means.
Instead of a large central opening the washer may have a. plurality of openings for use as a sprinkler top.
I claim 1. A pouringlip for containers comprising a thin washer with a central opening therein united to the top surface of a container mouth, with'its outside edge projecting beyond the outside periphery of the mouth.
2. A pouring lip for containers comprising a thin washer of transparent material, provided with a central opening therein, united to the top surface of a container '2 more mouth with its outer grojectitig beyond ou the outside periphery o I B. A pouring lip for con iners comprising 9 thin washer rovided with a oentrol 5 opemng unitedto t etopsurfaoe'of soon teiner mouth with its outside edge. projecting beyond the periphery of the mouth but not interfering with the application of a. cap to the container.
.- 10 4. A p ou lip for'oontainersoompriv v ing a. thin wa er provided with a central opening united by means of an adhesive to the to surface-of a-container mouth with its on 'de edge projecting beyond the pe- 15 ri buy of the mouth.
testimony whereof I have ofixed my signature. JESSE GUTMANN.
