ADVERTISING DEVICE FOR LETTERHEADS, FOLDERS, AND THE LIKE Filed Dec. 18, 1950 DOEJ ca. FINA/75175 Wnsm/vam/v, ac.
Patented Dec. 22, 1931 UNITED STATES? "PATENT OFFIC GEORGE WARREN HIRsnsoN, or NEW IBEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR o GEORGE H. REYNOLDS, 01? new BEDFOBJDLMASSACHUSETTS 7 ADVERTISIIYG DEVICE FOR LETrEnnEAns, ronnnn's, AND Inn LIKE Application filed December 18, 19;;0. 'ser'iarno, 503,2?9. 1
object is to provide a device in which a smalli card or tab is movably attached to a main sheet such as a letterhead, folder or the like and which is connected thereto in such a man ner as to stand out from the body of the sheet and shake or move aboutwhen the 10 letterhead or folder is handled, thereby at- 1 tracting attention to the advertisement, picture or other matter that may be printed on the front surface of the tab.
The invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of a letterhead with the invention applied thereto;
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Figure 1 showing the tab pressed back toward the sheet;
Figure 3 is a side View showing the tab standing out from the sheet;
Figures 4, 5 and 6 illustrate different forms of cuts which may be made in the sheet to provide the arms to which the tab is secured; and
pasted or otherwise securedto the rear sur 40 face of the tab 11. .The arms 12 may be a formed by cutting out the sheet 10 in different ways as illustrated in Figures 4:, 5 and 6. The arms 12 serve to hold the tab in front of the sheet and cause it to stand out fromthe front surface thereof. These arms are out of such size as to be flexible and yieldablc so that the tab is more or less loosely connected to the sheet, with the result that as the sheet is handled or moved about the tab is cause to shake or move and thereby attract To attach attention. The arms 12 are sufficiently-flex -ible as to permit the tab to be pressed back against the front face of the sheetso that it will not interfere when the sheet ispassed into a typewriter or folded flat as for inser- ,55
vtion in an envelope. The; tab is preferably made of sufiicient size to cover and thereby conceal the arms 12 and the cut-out portion of the sheet from which the armsare formed.
Instead of cutting out the main sheet, the
flexiblearms may be formed as an integral part of the tab'and bent rearwardly thereof and secured tothemain sheet. Such an'arrangement is illustratedin Figure 7 in which the arms 120i are integral with the tablla, the arms being bent rearwardly and having their rear ends 14 pasted or otherwise secured to the main sheet.
In some cases it may be preferable to form the arms from a narrow strip of paper or other suitable material separate and distinct from the main sheet or the tab. Such an arrangement is shown in Figure 8 in'which the flexible arms 12?) are formed of a separate strip of material having the interme+ diate portion 15 thereof secured to either the sheet 10 or the tab 116 and the end portions 16 thereof secured to the other part. This arrangement produces flexible arms connecting the sheet and tab, as in the other forms described. The front surface of the tab is adapted to receive printed matter'such as an advertise ment, picture,'trade slogan, etc., and as the l tab is more or less loosely connected to the s5 sheet, it will shake or move about when the sheet is picked up or handled. thereby attracting attention to the advertisement or other matter thereon.
Having thus described the invention;- what is claimed as new and desired to be se cured by Letters Patent is:
,1. An advertising device comprising, in combination, a main sheet of paper or the like having portions thereof cut out and bent forwardly of the sheet to form flexible arms integral with the sheet,'and a flat tab arranged in front of said sheet, said tab being of larger size than said cut-out portion on the main sheet, said arms being secured to the rear surface of said tab at spaced points, said arms normally causing said tab to stand out from the main sheet but being suflicient- 1y flexible to bend and permit the tab to move relative to the sheet and to be pressed against the sheet, said arms being foldable into the cut-out portions of the sheet, whenv thetab is pressed toward the sheet, said tab having a fiat front surface for receiving printed or other matter. V r
2. An advertisingdevice eomprising, in combination, a main sheet of paper or the like having portions thereof cut out and bent forwardly of the sheet to form flexible arms integral with the sheet, said arms being ar- ,ranged to be folded back into the openings I from which they are cut, a flat tab arranged in front of said sheet and in frontof said cutout portions and covering the latter, 1 said arms being secured to the rear surface ,ofsa'id tab, at spaced;points, said armsjnorinally causingsaidtab to. stand out from the main sheet but being sufiiciently flexible to bend and permit the-tab to move relativetothe sheet and to be pressed against the sheet With the arms pressed into said openings, said tab having a fiat front surface thereon for rece1v1ng printed or other matter.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
GEORGE WARREN HIRSHSON.
