HEN S NEST Filed Oct. 16, 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 ATTORNEV hens and also to provide means whereby the Patented Dec. 15', 1931 ALEXANDER BEVERLY, or nnnninomm, wasn'me'ron .Application'filed October 1s..ia2 a*ser1a1 no.14oaoe9,
This invention relates to a nest, the general object of the invention being to provide means for closing the nest when a hen enters'the same so that she is not disturbed by other eggs will roll into a receiving compartment as the hen leaves the nest so that the eggs are kept clean and ma sanitary condition.
This invention also consists in certain other 7 features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denotelike or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the nest. V V
Figure 2 is a top plan view.
Figure 3 is a front view showing the door open.
Figure 4' is a bottom plan view with the door open. a
In these views, the numeral 1 indicates the body of the nest which isprovided with an opening 2 at its front which is adapted to be closed by a door 3 which is'hingedly connected at its upper edge with the top of the body, as shown at 4. A platform 5 is pivotally supported in the body in such amanner that gravity holds the front end of the platform lowered and its rear end raised, as shown in full lines in Figure 1. An upright member 6 of loop construction, is fastened to the front end of the platform and engages a curved depending arm 7' connected with the hinge of the door, these parts being so arranged that the door is normally held in open position when the platform is in normal position, as shown in full lines in Figure 1, but whena hen enters the nest, her weight will tilt the platform to the dotted line position in Figure l, and as the front end of the platform moves upwardly, the loop member, engaging the arm 7 having a bent end portion, will move away from said bent end of the arm, and the weight of the door will cause the same to move to closed position, as shown indo tted omca lines in-Figure1.,-Thus the hen cannot be disturbed or injured by-other hens and after laying the' hen naturally moves toward the door, sothat the platform willtilt to its nor;
mal position and thus cause the loop 6 to en gage thearmfi andraise the door.
-nepen-ing 8 is formed in the platform adjacent the front thereof through which the a,
egg will roll, as the platform moves downwardly and thus the egg will be deposited in a chamber 9 at the front lower part of the body and the bottom of this chamber is .formed of wire mesh 11 covered with fabric 12 or the like to form a cushion for the eggs. A depending flange-like member 13 is fastened to the bottom of'the platform adjacent the opening 8 and this member will prevent an eggpassing through the opening from striking other eggs in the chamber as it rolls into the chamber, but as the platform is raised by another hen entering the nest, the
member will move upwardly and thus permit the egg to pass into the front part of the chamber. An opening 14 is formed in the top of the nest to permit light and air to enter the same.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is V 1. A'nest of the class described comprising a body having an opening in its front, a gravity door for closing the opening, a tiltable platform is in normal postion, said upwardly extending member moving away from the bent end portion of the arm when the platform is tilted by a hen entering the nest, permitting the door to close by gravity.
2. A nest of the class described comprising a body ha-vinglan opening in its front, a door for closing t e opening, a tiltable latform in the nest normally held with its ront end lowermost by the action of gravity, means whereby the door is held in open position when the platform is in normal position, but 7 H such means permitting the door to close when the platform is tilted by a hen entering the nest, an egg chamber at the front lower part of the body and said platform having an opening therein through which an egg will pass into the chamber when the front end of the platform moves downwardly as the hen leaves the nest and a depending member on the platform in front of the opening therein for preventing an egg dropping into the chamber from rolling forwardly until the platform is again tilted. 1
In testimony whereof I afiix 111 Si nature.
ALEXANDER BE E LY.
