Description

P. D. WRIGHT Dec'. l5,l 1931.
TUYERE Filed April 18, 1930 Patented Dec. 15, 1931 UNITED STATES PAT PAUL D. WRIGHT, DEcEAsED, LATE oF nnenwooi'),` PENNSYLVANIA, BY oLIviiE rAnniN WRIGHT, ExEcUTRIX, or EDGEWooD, PENNSYLVANIA TUYBE Application led April 18,
This invention relates to tuyres for blast furnaces of the uid or water cooled type having the nose of the tuyre protected by a covering of refractory material.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the improved tuyre.
Figure la is a view in end elevation thereof.
Figures 2 and 2a are views similar to Figures 1 and 1a of a slight modification in structure.
The reference character A generally designates the metal body of the tuyre having an outer wall 5, inner wall 6 and end walls 7 and 7a, a chamber 8 being thus provided for the circulation ofa cooling fluid, most generally water.
The inner wall 6 is extended, as at 6, beyond the forward end wall 7 f and at its extreme forward end said wall 6 is preferably formed with a peripheral flange 6b. This inner wall extension 6a is provided with annular reenforcing members 9 which maybe in the form of circumferential flanges, bosses or like projections, and the refractory material 10 is applied over said extension 6a and the members 9 which will thus become embedded therein.
These members 9 not only serve to reenforce the refractory material but transmit into the body thereof the cooling effect of the water, to thus lengthen the life of the tuyre nose by maintaining the refractory material at a reduced temperature when the tuyre is installed and in operation.
The forward extremity of the outer wall 5 is recessed as at 5, to provide a catch for the one extremity of a cap 11, preferably of sheet metal. It will be understood that the recessed portion 5a may be an annular recess or a series of recesses, as desired, and likewise the extremity of the metal cap may be formed with an annular flange or a series of inwardly rojecting bosses.
In the pre erred form of the tuyre, the
1930. Serial No. 445,401.
metal cap 11 has its forward extremity bent over the forward end of the refractory material, as at 11, to assist in protecting the said material particularly during handling and installation at the furnace.
In the modified form of the tuyre as shown in Figs. 2 and 2, the metal cap 11 is more simple in construction, the forward extremity t ereof being straight and not bent over the refractory material as in Figs. 1 and 1.
The end wall 7 is provided with a water inlet 12 and outlet 12, to provide for the introduction and circulation of cooling water in the chamber 8.
The simplicity in construction of the improved tuyre will be obvious. The metal body A may be cast in one piece and the refractory material applied over the extension 6 `and reenforcing and cooling members 9. The metal cap 11 may then be forcedv into position over the nose, and the tuyre is ready for installation.
What is claimed as new is:
1. A blast furnace tuyre comprising a metal body having outer, inner and end walls forming a water-circulation chamber therebetween, the inner wall having an integral extension beyond the forward end wall, said extension having a plurality of metal projections thereon, a refractory material applied over said extension so as to embed said projections, the outer wall of said body 4having a circumferential groove adjacent its forward end, and an outer sleeve-like cap covering saidv refractory material, the rear end of said cap being bent into said groove in the outer wall of said body and the forward end of said cap being bent over the forward end of said refractory material, to protectV said material during handling and installing.
2. A blast furnace tuyre comprising a metal body having outer, inner and end walls forming a water-circulation chambertherebetween, the inner wall having an integral cui extension beyond the forward end wall, said extension having a plurality of metal projections thereon, a refractory material applied over said extension so as to embed said projections, the outer wall of said body having a circumferential groove adjacent its forward end, and an outer sleeve-like cap covering said refractory material, the rear end of said cap being bent into the groove in the outer wall of said body.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.

Eecutrz' of the Estate of Paul D. Wright,
