My invention relates to improvements in extension tables and an important feature of the invention resides in means whereby the two main leaves of the table are operably a connected to simultaneously slide in opposite directions, so that one person grasping either of said leaves may cause both to move outwardly to extend the table, or inwardly to contract the table without assistance from another person. i
Other features reside in means for guiding and supporting the'main leavesand for locking them in different positions, and in order that the invention may be fully understood reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 9 is an enlarged'broken section on line 9 ofFig. 1. In carrying out the invention I employ a frame consisting of apair of longitudinal members 2 andtransversemembers 4 and 5,
which latter are mounted up'on suitable legs 3 and secured to the ends of said longitudinal members 2.
6 and 7 designate two main leaves slidably mounted upon the longitudinal frame members 2, which latter are provided at their ends with antifriction rollers 8 for reducing the friction between said members 2 and the leaves 6 and 7 during the operation of the latter. '5 5 -9 designates a plurality of supplemental leaves which, when not in use, are stored in pockets 13 formed in the table frame.
10 and 11 designate a pair of parallel guide bars firmly secured to the under sides of the no main leaves 6 and 7 respectively, for the purpose of guiding the latter and coacting with the table frame in providing a substantial support for said leaves when in their outward positions. The guide bars 10 and 11 extend in 05 opposite directions to each other as best shown by Fig. 1, and are provided at their adj acent ends with inverted U-bolts 14 and 16 projecting downwardlv through slots 18 and 20, respectively, extending longitudinally of '70 a guide member 22 secured at its ends to the central portions of the transverse frame members 4 and 5. Nuts 24 and-washers 26 are applied to the lower portions of the bolts 14 and 16 to prevent them from moving upwardly in the slots 18 and 20, respectively, and letting the adjacent ends of the guide bars 10 and 11 tip upwardly when downward pressure is applied to the outer ends of the main leaves 6 and 7 d When lifting stresses are applied to the main leaves Gand 7 the adjacent ends of the guide bars 10 and 11 are prevented from tipping downwardly by L-shaped members 30 secured to the respective guide bars by bolts 28, which latter also reinforce and prevent the adjacent ends of the guide bars from splitting. Washers 31 are mounted on the respective U-bolts 14 and 16 and interposed between the horizontal portions of the L-shaped members30 and the top of the longitudinal guide member 22. The washers 26 and 31 consist preferably of well-known fiber employed in insulating electrical devices of various kinds as it is found that the surface becomes hard and. smooth from use so that very little friction is developed when it has a sliding contact with another member such as the longitudinal guide member 22. Each bolt 28 passes through a vertical 199 a handle 86 and operably slot 33 in each member 30 so that the latter may be adjusted towards or away from the guide member 20 to leave the necessary clearance for efficient operation.
The guide bars 10 and 11 are also prevented from tipping upwardly or downwardly by means of guide members 32 and 34 provided with laterally extending tongues and 42 which project into grooves 44 and 46 extending longitudinally of said guide bars 10 and 11, respectively. The guide members 32 and 34 are secured to looks 36 and 38 by means of bolts and 47 and have vertical slots 49 and 50 so that they may be adjusted upwardly or downwardly to bring their tongues 41 and 42 into proper relation with the grooves 44 and 46, respectively.
The blocks 36 and 38 are secured upon the frame members 4 and 5 and have transverse grooves 48 and 51 in which the. respective guide bars 10 and 11 slide and are held from lateral movement, and as said guide bars cannot tip up or down as hereinbefore pointed out, it is apparent that they must move in a straight line and coaot with the table frame in providing a substantial support for the main leaves 6 and 7 Referring now to the means for causing the main leaves 6 and 7 to simultaneously move inwardly or outwardly in opposite directions, 54 designates apair of sheaves mounted in brackets 56 disposed between the guide bars 10 and 11 and secured to the longitudinal guide member 22 near the ends thereof as shown by Figs. 1 and 2. 58 designates a cable extending around the sheaves 54 and having one end secured to a bracket 60 and its opposite end secured to a tensioning member 62- adjustably secured to said bracket 60 by suitable means such as nuts 64.
The bracket 60 is secured to the upper portion of the guide bar 10 while the intermediate portion of the cable 58 is connected to the lower portion of the guide bar 11 by clamp means 66 consisting of an L-shaped member 68 and a movable jaw 70 between which the cable is clamped. The movable jaw 76 is drawn towards the fixed jaw or horizontal portion of the L-shaped member 68 by suitable means such as bolts 7 2. By connecting the upper strand of the cable to the guide bar 10 and the lower strano of said cable to the guide bar 11 through the intermediary of the bracket 60 and the clamp means66, respectively, it will be understood that when either of the leaves 6 or 7 is grasped and moved inwardly or outwardly that the companion leaf p ill be caused to travel in an opposite direcion.
The main leaf 6 is provided at its under side with a plurality of keepers 80 spaced equal distances apart and any of which is adapted to be engaged by the upturned ter minal .82 of a lock member 84 provided with mounted in bear- 7 properly fall within slotted guide member in ings 88 secured to the frame member 4 and the block 36.
In practice, when it is desired to extend the top of the table the main leaves 6 and 7 are pulled outwardly to the position disclosed by Fig. 1, where they are checked by the U- bolts 14 and 16 striking the outer ends of the slots 18 and 20, respectively. Any desired number of supplemental leaves 9 are then placed in position upon the frame members Qafter which the main leaves are pushed inwardly against the nearest edges of said supplemental leaves. The main leaf 6 is then secured from outward movement by engaging the lock member 84 with the nearest keeper 80 while the main leaf 7 is held from outward movement through the intermediary of its connections with the cable 58 and the clamp means 66, The main leaves 6 and 7 may likeise be locked against each other after the supplemental leaves have been removed.
From the foregoing description it is apparent that 'I have provided an extension table possessing the advantages above pointed out, and while I have shown and described one form of the invention I reserve all right to such other changes and modifications as the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a table of the character described, a frame, two main leaves slidably mounted on said frame, guide bars secured to said main leaves and extending towards each other, a longitudinally slotted guide member arranged beneath said guide bars and secured to theframe, elements depending from the adjacent ends of the guide bars and extendinc: through the slots in said guide member, and means on said elements for coacting with the slotted guide member in preventing vertical movement of the guide bars.
2. In a table of the character described, a frame. two main leaves slidably mounted on said frame. lon itudinally grooved guide bars secured to said main leaves and extending towards each other. members mounted on the frame and provided with tongues which project into the grooves in said guide bars. a longitudinally slotted guide member arranged beneath said guide bars and secured to the frame, elements depending from the adjacent ends of the guide bars and extending' through the slots in said guide member. and means on said elements for coacting with the preventing vertical movement of the guide bars.
8. In a table of the character described, a frame. two main leaves slidably mounted on said frame. longitudinally grooved guide bars secured to said main leaves and extendwork on the building; and further, to provided with tongues which project into the grooves of said guide bars, means extending through said slotted members for adjustably securing the latter to the frame, members mounted on the frame and provided with tongues which project into the grooves in said guide bars, a longitudinally slotted guide member arranged beneath said guide bars and secured to the frame, elements depending from the adjacent ends of the guide bars and extending through the slots in said guide member, and means on said elements for coacting with the slotted guide member in preventing vertical movement of the guide bars.
