ADJUSTABLE NECKTIE Application filed July 19, 1930. Serial Ka 469,078.
The present invention has in view the provision of a necktie which is adjustable so that its length may be varied and which is so constructed that the metal slide common to neckties of this type is reduced in size and arranged on an auxiliary strip secured to the inner ply so that it cannot be seen in looking at the front ply.
The present invention is applicable to any 1 style of necktie but is particularly useful in bow ties where the tying ends should be of the right length to provide an attractive bow. Heretofore adjustable ties have been constructed with a sliding metal part arranged to slide on the neckband portion of. the tie. This construction requires a large metal buckle or slide which is objectionable in that it detracts from the appearance and good taste of the tie and furthermore such large 29 buckle or slide renders the neckband portion where the buckle is located bulky and the sliding of the buckle over the tie soon causes the tie to become frayed and worn.
In order to overcome these. objections and to produce a more attractive tie,-the present invention provides a necktie which is made adjustable by means of an auxiliary strip of less width than the width of the neckband portion of the tie which is secured at its ends to that part of the tie which constitutes the loop or bight and on which the metal buckle or part is arranged to slide in order to lengthen or shorten the loop or bight. This construction renders a much more attractive looking tie in that the metal part is substantially hidden from view and the thinness of the material on which the slide is arranged makes it possible to use an extremely small metal buckle or slide. At the same time the said slide is readily slidable on the auxiliary stri A iiother object in View is the provision of an adjustable tie in which the fabric strip on which the slide operates and the lining of the neckband portion of the tie is provided with a glazed or finished surface to permit the slide to be easily moved to adjusted position.
With this and other obj eats-in view the i-nvention resides in the novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described hereinafter. The invention is shown in the accompanymg drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bow tie constructed in accordance with the invent1on; v
Figure 2 is a view in elevation of the neckband portion of thetie, and
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of line 3/3 of Fig. n
For the purpose of illustrating one embodiment of the invention, a bow tie 10 is shown which is provided with a single loop 11 by which the said tie may be adjusted to various lengths. It is not intended, however, that the invention should be limited to 'bow ties nor to a tie provided with a single adjustable loop as its application is readily apparent to four-in-hand ties and to ties formed with double loops.
The tie 10 consists of the tying members 12 and 13, each of a multi-ply construction comprising inner and outer plies 14 and 15. The tying member 12 is longer than the member 13 and extends through a greater part of the neckband portion of the tie and is then doubled back to form the said loop 11. The end of the loop 11 is narrowed at 16 and the narrowed portion 17 looped around the middle bar 18 of a slide 19. This end portion is then sewed to the body of the tie member 12 at 20, thus securing the slide 19 to the one end of the said tie member. The slide 19 is mounted to slide longitudinally on a ribbon member 21 which is secured at its ends to the tie member 12, one end being inturned between the plies at the line of stitching 22 and secured by said stitching, the other end being secured to the end of the said tie member at 20 beneath the narrowed portion 17. The said ribbon member 21 is narrower than the neckband portion of the tie and permits the use of the relatively small slide member 19. Intermediate its ends the said ribbon member 21 and the loop 11 are engaged by a metal link 23 secured to the inner end of the tie member 13. It will be understood that by moving the slide 19 along the ribbon member 21 the loop 11 may be lengthened or shortened as desired, thus lengthening or shortening the tie.
In order that the slide 19 may be freely moved on the ribbon 21, this member is formed of thin material having smooth surfaces and to prevent fraying of the edges the edges are beaded as at 24.
The neckband portion of the tie member 12 has the body of the ply 15 cut away and in place thereof a thin flexible strip 25 of tafi'eta silk or other thin material is stitched at its one end to the ply 15 by the stitching 22 and the other end is extended around the middle bar 18 of the slide 19 and is secured by stitching at 20. The said strip 25 is stitched along its sides to the edges of the ply 14. This construction provides a relatively thin and flexible neckband portion and the surface of the flexible strip having a smooth finish permits the slide 19 to be readily moved on the ribbon member 21. a
The ribbon member 21 is provided with indication marks placed at intervals along its length, such, for instance, as the numeral 13 at the one end and equally distanced therefrom the numerals 14 to 18 inclusive. These marks permit the slide member 19 to beset at definite points along its length so that the tie may be readily adjusted to any desired length to suit different sizes of collars.
I claim:
1. A necktie including tying end portions, a neckband portion connecting the end portions, a flexible member secured at its ends to the neckband ortion and unsecured therebetween, the sai neckband portion and flexible member being folded to form an adjustable loop with the said flexible member on the inside of the loop and a link secured to one end of said neckband portion, said link encircling the said flexible member and being slidable thereon for varying the length of the said loop and thereby the length of the tie.
2. A necktie including tying end portions, an intermediate neckband portion, a thin flexible member secured at its ends to the neckband portion and unsecured therebetween, a loop formed in said neckband portion between the points of attachment of the said flexible member therewith, said loop having a link member secured thereto through which the flexible member is threaded, the said link member being slidable on the said flexible member between the said points of attachment of the flexible member with the neckband portion for varying the length of the said loop and thereby varying the length of the said necktie.
3. An adjustable necktie including tying end ortions, an intermediate neckband portion etween the said tying end portions, a loop formed in said neckband portion, an auxiliary strip of material secured at its ends to the neckband portion, said auxiliary strip being unsecured between its points of attachment with the necktie portion, a link afiixed to the end of the said loop, the said auxiliary strip being threaded through the said link whereby the said link is slidable on the said auxiliary strip for varying the length of the said loop and thereby varying the length of the tie and a second link member secured to the inner end of one of the'tying end portions and connecting the end portion to the said loop and through which the said neckband and auxiliary member slide when the loop is adjusted to vary the length of the tie, the said second link operating to hold the auxiliary strip in a loop formation against the inner face of the said neckband portion.
4. An adjustable necktie including tying end members, one of said members being formed into a loop having one end of the loop connected to the other tying member, the said loop being formed of flexible material arranged in two plies, one of said plies being of relatively thin material and having a smooth finish, a narrow strip of material secured at its ends to the first mentioned tying member adjacent the said ply of smooth material and a slide member secured at the other end of the said loop and arranged to slide on the said narrow strip, the said ply of smooth material presenting an anti-friction surface permitting the said slide to be readily adjusted on the said narrow stri for Varying the length of the said loop an thereby the length of the said tie.
