Description

Dec. 8, 1931. i. A. BAUM COMBINED PLASTER TERMINAL AND MOLDING Filed Oct. 24, 1928 wcm.
Patented Dec. 8, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT-OFFICE ISAAC A. BAUM, k011" CHICAGO, ILLINOIS COMBINED BLASTER TERMINAL AND MOLDING Application filed ctober.24, 1928. Serial No. 314,703.
ing a plaster finishing element and a suitable decorative molding along the corners, difiiculty has been experienced in attaching the molding strip to the frame member. A number of devices have been utilized to meet the requirement, but all have been subject to certain objections arising from the inherent nature of the metal frame member.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a metal frame member having a plaster terminal and anchor secured thereto, and in addition, a suitable bent molding strip to properly finish the construction. The molding strip is welded to the plaster terminal and is not otherwise secured to the :trame member.
Another object of my invention is to provide a unitary meta-l frame member comprising side and end faces and with a combination plaster defining strip and anchor and a.
bent molding strip secured thereto, the strip having frictional contact with the side faces of the frame member thus avoiding the unsightly appearance of a welded or riveted joint at the intersection of the molding strip with the frame member.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which l? ig. l is a perspective elevation of a device constructed in accordance with my invention, and
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view thereof.
By reference to the drawings, rit will be seen that I have illustrated the metal frame member 10 which is suitably bent, and may include the door stop 11. The bowed plaster anchors 13 are formed in the side faces of the frame member.
The plaster defining strip and anchor of my invention is formed from a right angularly bent strip of metal having the contacting face 14 and the vertical flange 15 which serves as a plaster defining gauge. The flange 15 is rebent along its outer margin to provide the anchor 16.
The molding strip 17 herein contemplated is of suitably decorative appearance and is provided with a flange 18 adapted to be welded to the outer face of the flange 15. The opposite margin of the molding 17 is rebent as at 19 to insure a round single point contact with the side face of the frame member.
In construction, the margin 18 of the strip 17 is welded to the flange 15 of the plaster defining frame member at suitable 12 points thereon. To insure a tight and dustproof contact of the outer margin 19 of the strip with the side face of the frame member, the molding strip is welded to the flange 15 at a point that will bring the margin 19 slightly below the plane of the face 14 so that when the unit is to be welded to the face of the frame member a portion. The complete unit of two A pieces is then welded to the outer face of the force must be exerted against the plaster defining portion, thus creating a slight spring tension in the strip 17 and insuring a tight contact of the margin 17 with the side of the frame member.
It is obvious that the several parts in the invention contemplated may be joined in any suitable manner, and I have used the term welded7 merely for convenience. It is also obvious that the unit consisting of the plaster terminal and molding may be nailed or secured to a wood frame member and the same result secured as is contemplated herein.
Obviously modifications and variations may be made in the construction here illustrated and I do not Wish to be limited except as indicated in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A metal frame member of generally channel shape in cross section having a web and flanges adapted to encompass a masonry wall, a plaster terminal strip having a portion secured to the outer face of a flange and a portion projecting from the face of the flange, and a sheet metal molding strip welded to the projecting portion of the terminal strip and located in the angle between the flange and strip.
2. A metal frame member of generally channel shape in cross section having a web and lianges adapted to encompass a masonry wall, a plaster terminal strip having a portion secured to the outer face of a ange and a portion projecting from the face of the fla-nge, and a molding strip located in the angle between the flange and strip, one edge portion of the molding strip being fastened by Welding one Wall of the angular space Within which it is locatedend the other edge portion being unwttached and havingfrictional Contact with the other Wall of said angular space.
In testimony whereof I lll-ave aflixed my signature. y l l 'ISAAC A. BAUM.
