' CANADA AWNING SAVER Application filed October 9, 1930. Serial No. 487,460.
This invention relates to awnings and has asits principal object a means for encasing an awning after the same has been rolled up.
A further object is to provide means for raising and lowering an awning, which means will retain the awning in various predetermined positions.
A further object is to provide a means whereby the gable portions of the awning are formed integral with the body portion and may be rolled up flat Withthe body portion of the awning into a casing;
With the foregoingand other objects in View as will appear as the description pro ceeds, the invention consists of the novel construction,'combination and arrangement of co-operating elements as hereinafter more specifically set-forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which:

It has been the custom for merchants or other persons to dismantle their awning and store them away during the winter months. This dismantling and storing away of the same necessitated considerable labour and inconvenience. Also while the awning is in use, it is customary to rollit up on its roller during inclement weather, leaving certain portions of the same exposed to rain, sleet, snow or the like, which would damage the awning to a great extent. These disadvantagesare overcome by the present invention,
I as the awning, when rolled up, is completely encased and non-exposed to such weather conditions.
5 is a cylindrical casing supported from the face 6 of a building by means of brackets 7 and 8. 9' is a longitudinal hinged portion of the casing adapted to be swung outwardly as at ca (Fig. 2) to provide an opening through'which the awning 10 may extend. 11 are circular discs which provide the end closure members for the casing. The brackets 7 are each provided at their outer end with a bearing 12, in which the rod 14 is rotatably supported. 15 are lever arms fixedly supported at one end on the rod 14, which arms extend outwardly over the hinged portion 9. 16 are brackets fixedly connected to the hinged portion '9. Connected at one end to 65 the outer ends of the respective lever arms 15 and their opposite end to the respective brackets 16, we provide connecting links 17. 18 are suitable hinges connecting the hinged portion 9 to the casing 5. Referring to Fig. 3, it will be noted that the upper edge of the hinged portion 9 extends under the forward edge of the casing 5 while the lower edge of the hinged portion 9 extends under the lower forward edge of the casing 5. This arrangement of parts eliminates the possibility of rain, sleet, snow or the like gaining access to the interior of the casing. v
One end of the rod 14 is provided with a fixedly'connected forked head 19. 20 is a gear box in which a worm gear 21 and a worm pinion 22 are disposedin intermeshing relation. 23 is a vertical shaft the lower end of which extends into the shank portion 24 of the worm gear 21 and is held in fixed relation thereto by means of the pin 25 which extends through the slot 26 across the lower end of the shaft 23. The upper end of the shaft 23 is forked as at 27. 28 is a connecting link between the shaft-23 and the rod 14. The ends of this connecting link are universally connected to the respective forked ends of the shaft 23 and the head 19. 29 is a roller within the casing 5 upon which the awning 10 is adapted to be rolled. The roller 29 is supported between the circular discs 11 and one end extends outwardly through the casing as at 29a. 30 is a bevel gear fixedly supported on the extended end 29a. 31 is a worm gear provided with a bore 32, which fits over the 100 the operator will insert the squared portion collar 35, which bevel gear meshes with the bevel gear on the extended portion 29a ofthe roller29 37 is a worm pinion meshing with the worm gear 31. The worm pinionsv 22 and 37 are each provided with a square socket 38 and 39 respectively. 40 is a crank provided with a square block 41 adapted to be fitted into the square socket 38 or 39.
, 42' is a supporting frame adapted to reinforce the outer edge of the awning 10 and which frame is provided with supporting legs 43, the ends of'which are hingedlyconnected to brackets 44, supported from the face 6 of the building. The casing 5 is provided with notches 45' into which the supporting frame 42 will enter when the awning is being rolled to encased position.
Referring to Fig. 4, we disclose a means whereby the gable portions 10a of the awning 10 may be folded in, flat against the awning 10, when it is desirous of rolling the awning into the casing 5. The free points of the gable portions 10 are provided with rings 46' while the awning 10 is provided with rings 47. 48
is a cord, the ends of which are trained through the rings 47 and connected to the rings 46. Upon pulling the central portion of the'cord' 48', the" gable portions 10a will be I drawn into flat position against the under face of the awning 10 and the cord 48 may then be suitably tied to the frame 42 as disclosed in Fig. 4. This will retain the gable portions 10a in flat contact with the body portion of the awning 10 and upon rotation of theroller 29, the gable portion 10a will be rolled upwith the body portion of the awning 10.

The turning of the crank will cause rotation of the rod 14, through the medium of the worm pinion 22, worm gear 21, pin 25, shaft 23 and the universal connecting link 28. Upon rotation of the rod 14 in the desired direction, the lever arms 15 and connecting links 17, the hinged portion 9 will be swung upwardly to open position as shown in Fig. 2. The
operator will then withdraw the squared portion 4l of the crank 40 out of the socket 38 from the roller 29. After the awning 10 has I gainingentrance to the casing 5.
' When it is desired to lower the gable portions 10a, the cord 48 will be untied from the frame 42 and the gable portions 10a of the awning 10 allowed to drop perpendicular. The rings'46 may then be engaged over the hooks 49 extending from the face 6 of. the building as shown in Fig; 2.
The foregoing specification and annexed drawings disclose the preferred embodiment of our invention, but it is to be understood that minor changes may be resorted'to in the commercial adaptation of our invention without departing from the scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
