y invention relates to hair waving devices.
It has for its obj ect to provide an improved hair waving-device, and more particularly such a device adapted to produce a Marcel Wave. A further object of myinvention is to provide such a device which is more convenient in use and adapted to be placed in position upon the hair with greater facility. 15 A still further object is to provide such a device embodying various features of improved and simplified structure. These and other objects and advantages of my improved construction will, however, hereinafter more :5 fully appear. I

In this illustrative construction, I have 85 shown a curler otthe type including a pivoted toothed member 1 of arched shape adapted to conform to the headand having a series of dependingteeth 2 at each side thereof and plan view of the struca slidably connected arched inner toothedmember 3 carrying a single series of depending .teeth l, the member 1 herein being pivotally connected, as at 5, to. an arched rongmember 6 having prongs receivable tween the teeth 4 and the two series of 45 teeth 2. j
Considering the member 1, it will be noted that it is provided wvith a narrow longitudinally extending slot 7 in its top, and that the member 3 is suitably'slidably connected below the edges of this slot, as at 3, while an ber 3 which extends upward through this slot in such manner as to be operable from the top of the member 1 and permit this actuating member and the member 3, to be shifted longitudinally relative to the slot and the member 1. More particularly, it will be noted that the member 8 is herein in the form of a clip having a curved outer end adapting it to be readily operated by a finger, and that its lower end is provided with a U-shaped extension 9, which is suitably attached, as by rivets 10, to the side walls oft-he member As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, this member 8 is located near the right-hand end of the member 8 but spaced from the extremity thereof and adapted to have its movement toward the right arrested by a stop 11 provided in the form of a slot in an attachment member 12 which is connected to the mem-, ber l and carries the pivot 5, as hereinafter described.
Referring to the member 3, it will be noted that this member is slightly longer than the member 1 and that it is adapted to have its right-hand end moved in under the plate 12 until a rear abutment 13 on the member 3 engages an abutment 14 carried by the member 6. In a preferred construction, this abutment 13 engages the abutment 14 when the member 8 engages the stop 11 on the plate 12. through providing for movement of the member 3 beneath the plate, it'is made possible to utilize this space not previously used 7 in such devices and to enable the member 8 in all ordinary use to be closely adjacent the pivot 5for a purpose hereinafter described.
Attentionis also directed to the member 6, which herein is ot'substantially U-shape and includes parallel arched prongs of narrow cross section and having smooth rounded inner edges 15 adaptedfto engage thehair along lines on opposite sides of the teeth 4 a and between the latter and the two sets of teeth 2, It will also be noted that this member 6 is provided with upstanding stops -16 projecting above the prongs and herein extending upward between the stopll and the pivot and laterally on opposite sides of a Thus, it'will be observed that reduced portion 17 on the plate 12, these stops 16 thus being enabled to act to limit the movement of the hair relative to the prongs in such manner as to prevent entanglement with the pivot means.
Referring more particularly to the pivot means connecting the members 1 and 6, it will be noted that these are so disposed as to be very convenient and quite close to the member 8. More particularly, the member 12 is provided on its right-hand end with a right-angle extension 18, in turn having laterally extending ears or lugs 19 thereon between its ends connected to the pivot 5, and also having an actuating portion carrying a push button 20 at an extremity spaced from the pivot. It will also be observed that the member 6 has a similar actuating portion 21 herein also carrying corresponding oppositely disposed lugs or ears 22 coimected with the ears 19 by the pivot pin, while an inclined extremity is provided in this instance carrying a push button 23 on the opposite face from the push but-ton 20. Here attention is also directed to the fact that this member 21 has on its lower end extensions 24 which are integrally united with the stops 16, these extensions 2 being attached at 25 to-the inner end of the prongs G and having the stops bent laterally above them, while the body of the member 21 is suitably attached, as at 26, to the U-shaped rod member 6. Herein a coiled spring 27 is also carried on the pivot pin 5, the spring preferably having an intermediate bowed end 28 abutting against the adjacent surface of the portion 18 and end coils on the pin 5 at each end of the same and free ends 29 acting against the inside surface of the member 21. 7
Here attention is also directed to the fact that the members carrying the push buttons are longitudinally ribbed, as shown at 30, in such manner as to give them the desired strength while enabling them to be made of very light material. It will also be noted that the member 12 is very securely attached to the member 1, overlylng the latter and being provided wlth extensions 31 seated under raised portions 32 on opposite sides of the latter, while extensions 33 on the end of the member .1 are extended through slots 34 in the member 12 and bent over as shown, these extensions and slots also being on opposite sides of the member 12. Through the use of a U- shaped prong member 6 and its connections to the member 21, a light yet strong construction is also provided.
In the use of my improved construction, it is possible to apply the device to the hair by compressing the push buttons 20 and 23'with the fingers of one hand and inserting the'then opened prongs 6 in the hair so that the hair lies above the prongs and beneath the members 1 and 3 and passes transversely across the various toothed members, the member 3 then being, as usual, in an extended position shown for example in Fig. 2. When the prongs 6 have been released, i. e. permitted to engage the hair, it is then possible by using a finger of the same hand holding the device, to engage the actuating member 8 of the memher 3 and pull it toward the pivot in such manner as to insert the desired degree of wave. Here it will of course be understood that the member 3, being capable of sliding as desired longitudinally of themember 2, may be initially located farther to the left or right relative to the member 1 than shown in Fig. 2, depending upon the amount of wave required, but that, due to the location of the member 8 and push buttons 20 and23, the actuating member 8 will remain Within ready range of the operators hand holding the :device, in such manner as to enable it to be readily adjusted by one of the fingers of that hand. Attention here is also directed to the function of the stops 16,'which prevent the hair from passing too far along the prongs when the same are in the open position i1- lustratcd in Fig. .2, and thereby obviate difiic-u-l-ty arising from entanglement with the pivot mechanism or parts. It will also be observed that the narrow prongs function effectively in conjunction with the teeth'on the members 1 and 3 tohold the hair in the desired position relative to the latter while permitting movement of the member 3, and that the edges of the same engaging the hair are so rounded as not to be in any way injurious to the hair. a
- As a result of my improvement, it is made possible to use a Marcel waving device of this type with greatly increased facility. For example, it is possible to grip the push buttons 20 and 23 between the thumb and second finger of the hand and with the forefinger reach the actuating member 8 and thereby slide the member 3 readily and quickly with the same hand holding the device, as distinguished from the previous necessity of holding the device with one hand and with the other 11 and reaching up and moving a longitudinally adjustable member. Attention is also directed to the fact that in this construction I am enabled to use an adjustable inside member having only one series of teeth engaging the hair, as distinguished from an outside member and such a member having two series of teeth engaging the hair, and thus able not only to utilize the outside member as one of the pivoted members and provide a stronger and better construction, but also to adjust the inner member with, great facility, as hereinabove brought out. Attention is also directed to the extremely simple, light, yet strong and inexpensive character of the device. These and other advantages of my improvements will, however, be clearly apparcnt to those skilled in the art.
While I have in this application specifically described one form'which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that the same is shown herein for purposes of illustration only, and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
IVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A Marcel waving device comprising pivoted prong means and cooperating relatively adjustable toothed members, one slidable within the other toothed member and having an actuating member projecting through said other member, and finger operative projecting actuating means on said pron means and said other toothed member.
2. A Marcel waving device comprising pi voted prong means and cooperating toothed elements, the latter including a longitudinally slidable element slidably mounted within the other and having an actuating member projecting through the other toothed element and adjustable from the top thereof, and finger operative resiliently connected actuating means 011 said prong means and said other toothed element likewise projecting above the top of the latter element.
3. A Marcel waving device comprising pivoted prong means and cooperating toothed elements, the latter including an elementhaving a longitudinal slot therein and another co-operating element slidably mounted in the other beneath the same and having an actuating member extending outward through said slot and finger operative resiliently connected and normally spaced actuating means on said prong means andfsaid toothed member compressible together to open said prong means.
4. In a Marcel waving device, pivoted prong and toothed elements, the latter including relatively adjustable toothed members, one of which has its end adjacent the pivot movable under the pivot.

6. In a Marcel waving device, pivoted elements including relatively slidable toothed members and swinging prong members cooperating therewlth to grasp the hair, and stop means for the adjustable toothed member carried by said prong members acent the pivot thereof.
7. In a Marcel waving device, pivoted elements including relatively slidable'toothed members and swinging prong members, and stop members carried by said prong members adjacent the pivot thereof, said stop members being so disposed as to permit movement members being so disposed as topermit move-- ment of one of said toothed membersbetween said stop members and said movable toothed member having actuating means projecting through the top of its fellow.
9. In "a Marcel waving device, pivotally connected elements, one comprising relative-' ly adjustabletoothed members and the other cooperating prong means, finger operative, actuating portions for said elements on the opposite side of the pivot from said toothed members, and means for adjusting the movable toothed member independently of said actuating portions to form a wave and dis-1 posed'within reach of another finger of the hand en aging said actuating portions.
10. In a Marcel waving device, pivotally connected elements, one comprising a prong member and the other comprising a toothed member carrying an adjustable toothed mem'-' her, and separate upwardly extending actuating means for said pivoted elements and for said adjustable toothed member adjacent one another and operable by the same hand.

In a Marcel waving device, cooperating toothed members including an inner longitudinally adjustable toothed member carrying an upstanding manually engageable actuating projection spaced from one end thereof and a cooperating outer toothedmember having guiding'means for said adjustablemem; her and through which said projection extends, co operating prong means pivotally connected to said outer member, and finger operative actuating means on said prong means and outer member at one endof the same operable from the same side of thelatter member as said projection, said inner toothed member being adjustableindependently of said actuating means to form a wave. i
13. In a Marcel waving device, cooperate ing toothed members including an inner l rying a projectionspaced from one end thereof and a cooperating outer toothed member havin' a slot through which said projection extends, and a prong member pivotally connected to said outer toothed member and carrying prongs receivable between the teeth of said toothed members, both said prong members and outer toothed member having actuating projections adjacent said first mentioned projection.

In a Marcel Waving device, elements comprising a prong member and cooperating relatively adjustable toothed members, said prong memberand the non-adjustable toothed member each having extensionssubstantially at right angles to their ends and carrying pivot means operatively connecting the elements, and spring means normally pressing the elements together.

In a Marcel waving device, elements comprising a prong member and cooperating relatively adjustable toothed members, said prong member and the non-adjustable toothed member each having extensions substantially at right angles. to their ends and carrying pivot means opera-tively connecting the elements and said adjustable toothed member also having a projection extending through the top of its fellow.
16. In a Marcel waving device, elements comprising a prong member and cooperating relatively adjustable toothed members, said prong member and the non-adj ustable toothed member each having extensions substantially at rightangles to their ends and carrying pivot means intermediatethe ends of said extensions operatively connecting the elements, and said adjustable member also having one extremity movable under the pivot means and a projection projecting through the top of its fellow and spaced longitudinally from said'extremity, and spring means normally pressing the elements together.
17. In :1 Marcel waving device, elements comprising a prong member and cooperating relatively adjustable toothed members, said prong member carrying stop means adjacent the pivot thereof and the adjacent end of the non-adjustable toothed member, and said prong member and the-non-adj ustable toothed member each having extensions substantially at right angles to their ends and carrying pivot means intermediate the ends of said extensions operatively connecting the elements, while the adjustable member has a projection extending through its fellow adj acent said pivot means, and spring means normally pressing the elements together.
18. In a Marcel waving device, pivotally connected prong and toothed members, the latter having an adjustable toothed member and the pivot being displaced laterally and having said adjustable member movable beneath the same, stop means on said prong member limiting the movement of the hair relative to the pivot, and projecting means on the adj ustabletoothedmember projecting above its cooperating toothed member and movable relative to said pivot means with said adjustable member. 7
