IMPROVEMENT INHARNESS-MOUNTINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,026, dated October 10, 1876; application filed September 17, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. SARGEANT, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in the Construction of Harness-Mountings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification Figure 1 being a side view of a terret constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2, an edge view of the same; Fig. 3, a side view of a single-harness check-hook constructed according to my invention; Fig. 4, an edge view of the same; Fig. 5, a side view of a doubleharness check-hook constructed according to my invention; Fig. 6, an edge view of the same; Figs. 7, 8, and 9, views, detached, of several parts composing the improved harnessmountings.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
My invention consists in an improved construction of harness mountings by making separate tips and bases of polishable metal, and the body of metal japanned, substantially as hereinafter specified.
In the accompanying drawings, the bodies or main parts AB C of the terrets and checkhooks are represented of suitable forms, being made of malleable castiron and finished by japanning. The bases at a at, including the necks b b b for these rings and hooks, are formed (preferably in a lathe) of separate "pieces of solid polishable metal, and finished with gold, silver, or nickel plate, or made in solid oroide, or equivalent alloy requiring no plating to make a good finish for some kinds of mountings. Then they are burnished or polished complete before affixing them to the previously-japanned bodies. They are attached to the bodies in any suitable or ordinary manner. The tips 61 d for the checkhooks are, in like manner, formed separately of polishable metal, and finished with gold, silver, or nickel plate, or in oroide, and they are applied to the previously-japanned bodies of the books by screwing thereon, or otherwise, as may be convenient or desired.
Harncssmountings thus constructed are cheaply and expeditiously made, and perfect of their kind, the ornamentation of the tips and bases by electro-platin g and polishing not interfering with the ornamentation of the bodies of the mountings byjapanning; whereas, if the parts were all constructed and thus finished as in one piece, the different processes of the ornamentation would interfere, and require several additional manipulations, with less perfect finish.
The mountings may be constructed without outer bandsffof polishable metal; but when they are applied on the outer peripheries or contours of the terrets and check-hooks they are made solid, separate bands of polishable metal, as shown in Fig. 9, and finished like the bases and tips of the mountings; and they are attached to the japanned bodies by soldering or other convenient means.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Harness-mountings composed of separate tips and bases of polishable metal, and the body of japanned metal, all substantially as herein described.
