I UNITED STATES EDWIN A.. oLLEY AND DANIEL B. WINTER; OF'SYRACUSE, NEWVYQRK, Ass'IGNoIs 'ro ATENT CROUSE-HINDS COMPANY, OFVSYRACUSE, NEW zonin a oonromron or NEW 'ron FASTENER FORLBOXES i I Application filed January 30,' '1929. Serial 1103336373..
This invention relates to fa'stening means for securing covers on boxes and the like and more particularly for securing the trm on a panel board cabinet or boxes. The fastening means is of the kind shown in Greaves Patent No. 1,287,000 issued December '10,:
' 1918. i i v i The invention consists in the novel features of Construction whereby the cost* of V m' manufacturing is greatly reduced. Other advantages will appearupon reading the following descriptipn. r
In describingthis invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which 13' like characters designate corresponding parts in all the Views. e I
Figure 1 is an inverted plan view show-- ing a portion of the trim with contiguous portion of the cabinetpartly in secton.
zo Figure 2 is a view in elevation of the clamping means shown in operative position securing a portion of the trim to the contiguous portion of the cabinet. F igure 3 is a view in elevation similar to F igure 2 with the fastening means in inoperative position. v
1 designates the side walls of the .panel board cabinet or boX and 2 a flange formed on the front of the box by the walls being turned inwardly, which flange provides a support for the trim 3. The trim in this instance corresponds to the cover of a box. 'The fastening 'means here shown is carried by the cover or trim which is secured in position after the box or cabinet is placed in operated position, generally in the wall-s or partitions of'buildings.` V j 4 designates an S-shaped support with a central elongated portion formed at right' 40 angles to'the parallel end portions. One end portion is Secured to'the under side oftthe trim, preferably'by spot weldng, while theother is drilled to receive the end of a screw 5. 6 is a jaw or clamping member for-med from a fiat piece of steel by bending over the e sides forming a channel with a back portion 7 and side railsB. r
The siderails are shaped similar to'a jack 'knife *blade with the heel portions drilled and threaded to receive the screw 5.
v wise direction; ;the jaWG iscausedto move in vided 'on the end portion of the rupper side In assembling the device; one endportion of the support 4 is .spot welded to thetrim in a predetermined position. {The screw 5 is then passed, through a hole in the trim, also at a predetermined position in relation to the support 4 so that the screw 5 will passf through the hole formed in .the opposite end portion` of the'support After the screw 5 is passed throughthe hole in the trim 3, it is threaded' through the heel ,portions of the jaws 6 and then' passed throughthe h'ole in the end portionof the support 4 and head; ed over, as shown at 9, sothat the screw-'cannot get` out of place and "cause trouble and delay whenthe trim is being Secured in position on :the lirontside. of the bOX or cabinet p 7 I :j
'Upon turning' of the screw 5 in, a clockr the` same direction as the screw until` the rear edge; portion 10` contacts with :the-"central portion of the support 4, at ,which time, vthe
outerend of the jaw assumes an operative pos'ition under the flangebf the 'boxor .cabinet. i a l i r v I ,'ontinuedturning of the screw causes 7 .the jaw (if tomove toward 'thetrim and' eventually engage with the fiange 2 ofthe boxzor cabinet, .th us clamping the, .trim 3 tightly on the front of the cabinet. Generally. the screw 5 will 'fitthe threaided por tion of theiside rails 8 of the jaw 6 tight' 'enoughfto causethe jaw to move with the screw until ?stopped by contact with the cen-` tral portion of the support 4. However,-to,
prevent' the jawfrom becoming loose, the screw 5 is provided with tension means as shown by spring'10 'which holdsthe' jaw in friction'al contact with the screw throughout' its entire length. Tocompensate for efiective, a boss 'or raised portion ll is pro:
jaw member 6 in the same direction the 'the thickness of the spring when compressed, i j and also to renderthe clamping means more rall ,of thejaw 6 whichraisedportion coactsis e 'I jaw assuming a position out from under the fiange 2. The trim is then placed upon the front of the box or cabinet and by merely turning the screw 5 in clockwise direction, the end of the 6 is swung under the fiange 2 and by continued movement of the screw, the jaw is caused to slidably engage with the central portion of the support 4 and eventually coact against thefiange 2 as here totore described NVhat we claim is:
1. A clamp comprising a support, a screw Secured to said support to prevent endwise movement of the screw, a jaw threaded on the screw, and means to limit the rotary movement of the jaw by contact with the support.
2. The conibnation of two parts to be clamped together, 'a clamp comprising a support carried by one part, a screw eXtending I through said part and into engagement with I p the support, and means for holding the screw i from endwise movement, a jaw threaded on the screw andi slidably. engaging the support and means for holding the jaw in sufiicient frictional contact with the screw whereby the jaw is rotated with the screw until stopped by contact with the support.
3. The combination of a boX and a cover to be clamped together, a support carried by the cover on the inner side thereof and depending into the box in a general direction parallel to a side wallof the box, a screw extending through the cover substantially parallel to the depending portion 'of the support and connected to the support at its inner end to hold the screw froni displa cement, a jaw threaded on the screw, the screw eXtend ing through, the jaw near one end thereof. and said end slidably engaging the support and having a shoulder to coact with thesupport 'when the jaw has been turned t'oiposi- %on in operative relaton to the wall of the ox.
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto signed our names at Syraeuse, in the county of Onondaga and. State of New York, ,this 25th day of January, 1929. i i i EDWIN A. OLLEY. DANIEL, B. WINTER'. i
