Description

T. B.'FAGAN.
SULKY' GANG-PLOW,
No. 182,569. Patented. Sepp.` ze, me.
ATTUBHEN'S.
N. PEYERS, PHomunomPnin. WASHINGTON. D. Gy
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE THOMAS B. FAGAN, OF VAN WERT, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SULKY GANG-FLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Puatent No. 182,569, dated September 26, 1876; application filed l August 7, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS B. FAGAN, of Van Wert, in the county of Van Wert and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Sulky Gang-Plow, of which the following' is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a top view, and Fig. 2 a side View, of my improved sulky gang-plow.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention relates to an improved sulky gang-plow of simple and strong construction, and consists of a bent axle placed at an oblique angle to the tongue, and arranged with ixed slotted guide-arms for the plow-beams that are set to greater or less depth by a clevis and crank-screw connection. A lateral crank-bar is pivoted to the axle, and extended across below the plow-beams to raise or lower the same by a hand-lever and notched arcshaped rack. f
In the drawing, A represents the axle of my improved sulky gang-plow, which is rigidly attached and braced at an oblique angle to the tongue, the ends of the axle being tirst bent downward, and then outward at right angles to the axis of the gang-plow. The wheels B are applied to the ends of the axle, one wheel being larger than the other for the purpose of ruiming the plows level when at Work. Curved guide-bars O are rigidlyl attached to the axles, and extended back of the same in la direction parallel to the tongue. The guide-bars C are slotted from the ends upward for the beams D of the plows, as-
many guide-bars C being arranged as there are plows. The slotted guide-bars serve to retain the plow-beams at any depth in rigid position. rEhe plows are applied to the rear ends of the beams D, and may be provided with cutters that prevent the plows from catching on stones or roots While at work.
The plows are rigidly secured and braced to the beams, and operated jointly by means of a clevis, E, applied to the front endls of the beams, Which are bent to meet at the clevisjoint, and by a crank-screw, El, thatpasses through the tongue suitably to be readily turned by the driver. The plows are thereby set to greater or less depth, as required. 'Ihe clevis E is further connected by a pivot-link and hitch-rod, E2, to tongue to pull on the plows. The beams are so hinged to clevis that each may Work independently of the other for clearing obstructions, &c.
A lateral crank-bar, F, is pivoted to axle, and passed below the plow-beams from one side to the other. The crank-bar F is operated by a hand-lever, F', so as to raise the plows out of the ground or lower them.
The hand-lever F is set into notches of an arc-shaped rack or guide bar, and retains thereby the plows in position. The hand-lever is also conveniently operated by the driver, who controls by the same and the crankscrew the gang-plow with great facility from his seat.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent- In a sulky gang-plow, the combination of the axle secured obliquely to the tongue, and of curved and slotted gnidebars attached thereto, with the swinging plow-beams, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
THoMAs- B. EAGAN.
