Description

Sept. 29, 1931. R. c. GLENN ET AL CIGARETIE PACKAGE Filed Jue 10, 1929 10 the package.
Patented Spt. 29, 1931 ,WILLIAM w. FEBGUSON, 01? mon HILL, MISSOUBI V i Our invention relates to cigarette packages, and more particularly t Incans. for openingf containers such' as cigarette packages, the principal objects of the invention 'being to facilitatefthe opening of a package of cigarettes, to assureoperation of opening means,to seal an :opening member in the package,.and,to efect opening with :1 minimum amouiit of rupture and ,dist0rti0n of In accomplishing these and other objects of the invention, we have provided improved details of, structure, the, ,preferred forms of Whih, areillustratcd in the accompany- 1 in;; dra wings,: whereinz Fig.l is a perspective view of a sealed package, as ;of cigarettes, equipped with our improvedppening means, and adapted for .beingopened in accordance with our inven- Fig, 2; is a' similar gVieW illustrating .th e first ,steps in opening.;the paCkage.

Eig. 4.,s a perspectiveview of an inner container in }processgofjsmanufacture, illustratihg the location of, the Opening member, partsof container; walls being broken away to show the relation of its members.
"" Fig. 5 is a perspective viewtof the package. illustratingjtheilier container in completed condition, and an outer jacket in process of installation.
' Fig. 6 is a,fragmentary perspective view "(if the package, illustrating a sealing stamp in process of installation to seal the inner container flap and the opening member to the package.
,Referring in detail to the drawings:
designates an inner jacket or container comprising a sheet of foil 2 provided with a Iining 3 of relatively light weight paper, and adapted to be folded to form a wrapper including a back member 4, side walls 5.
Verlapping front flaps or longitudinal coveringedge portions 6 and 7 having edges substantially equally spaced from the longitudinal median line of the package, and end flaps 8 and 9.
The ends of the side walls are folded infoil and paper.
' CIGARETTE PACKAGE Application filed June 10, 1929. Serial No. 369,820.
, wardly over a bundle of cigarettes 10, and the flap 8 comprises a composite upper or inner end flap formed by the separable overlapping ends of the front edge portions of the The flap 9 comprises folded portion: of
the end of the back, and is theref0re integral,
and is scored as at 11 on the median line oi the back to define a severing line and to pro- ,vide a weakened or perforated connection whereby the halves of the flap may be easily separated, as later described. V The package further comprises an outer jacket or cover 12, inclu ding a portion having overlapping ends 13 and 14 secured together as by glue to form a tube for encircling the container and retaining its separable. front fiaps in engaged position.- The jacket fur-- ther is preferably open -at its upper end adjacent the scored flap 9 of the container, and is elonguted to provide end portions such; as 15 adapted to be folded inwardl and attached to each other to form aclosederid or bottom. The jacket is scored on the median line of its front overlapping attached 7 members to provide a Weakened portion having a separation line in aligriment withthe weakened lineof the-container flap, Mounted in thepackage, With its inner end adjacent the base of the flap 9, is an open- "80" ing member 16 preferably comprising a thread or cord, extndihgbetween the flaps' 8 and 9 to a position on the-outer face of the jacket, in -registrywiththe score lines of the flap 9 and the jacket. The crd isinstalled.f5 in the.pr0cess =of: assmbling and ';forming the package, and prefer ably hasit &ngrend attached l5y a t btl8 to theinnfifa-e 013 9. ;.e,stanPgthhs sals andicloses thescbi ing in the flap 9, and latches the free outer 10 end of the cord to the package. A-portion of the cord extends beyond the front end of' cation of relatively slight force will cause it to rupture the end flap 9 along its weakened line, the relatively fragile stamp being coincidently eut.
Attention is called to the fact that the side edges of the stamp, adhering to .the flaps 8 and 9 and to the jacket, form arelatively secure binding connection between the Several elements, Which must be removed or broken to permit displace'ment of the container flaps for opening the end of the package.
Operation of the cord, in an improved package, tends to-displace the flap 9, and tear the stamp from the flaps and jacket.- The longitudinal edgcs of the stamp Will, bowever, ordinarily be retainedin engagement with the flaps and jacket, and the flap 9 and stamp will be divided by the'cord.
The user Will then grasp opposite sides of the package, and break the same on the median line of the jacket, the scoring of the jacket permitting fracture thereof, and the unattached overlapping edges of the container slidably moving away from each other to permit opening of thepackage on its median line, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
Attention is called to the preferred mounting of the free end of the cordoutside of the jacket, and the provision of perforations in the outer flap 9, whereby the cord is enabled to operate only on the median line of the stamp, and splits the stamp, thus avoiding tearing of the same away from the jacket and end flaps. The two half portions'of the package are therefore retained in integral condition, hihged on the median line of the back,
and may"be Separated and brought together in use for securely holding the contents until the same is exhasted. v
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a cigarette package including a container having separable overlapping inner and outer end flaps, and a cover pr0vided pvith a longitudinalscore line on themedin line of the ackage, an opener comprising a thread-li e member having one end anchored in the package adjacent the baseof the outer end flap and extending betWeen said flaps and 'over the cover.
2. In a cigarette package including an inner jacket having overlapping inner and outer upper end flaps, and an outer jacket comprising a tubular cover having an open upper end and provided With a weakened l1ne, an opener comprising a thread-like member having one end anchored in the package ad- -outer upper end flaps, and anouter jacket comprising a tubular cover having an open upper end and provided with a weakened portion, an opener comprising a thread-like member having one end anchored in the package adjacent the base of said outer end flap and extending; between said flaps and over the outer jacket in registry with the weakened portion thereof. r
4. In a cigarette package including an inner container having an upper flap at one end, a lower flap at said end adapted to underlie the upper flap, and overlapping side flaps, a tubular cover provided with a longitudinal score line overlying the overlapping flaps of the inner container, and a separating member mounted on the inner container and extending between said upper and lower fiaps in alignment with said score line.
5. In a cigarette package, an inner jacket comprising an integral back and overlapping front edge portions having ends adapted to be folded over an end of the package to form an upper flap, the back having an end adapted to be folded over the upper flap to form an exterior upper end flap and scored on the median line of the package, an outer jacket com prising an integral sheet having longitudinal edges secured together to form a tube and perforated on the1nedian line of the package, and a thread-like opening 1nember having one end anchored to the back of the inner jacket and extending on the median line of the package between the upper flap and the lower flap.
In testimon Where0f we afiix our signaturcs.
