Description

SLEEVE-FASTENER.
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 18,247, dated September 22, 1857.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, DAVID C. PEACOGK, of the city of Brooklyn, in the State of New York, have invented an Improvement in the Manufacture of Sleeve-Buttons of Gold or other Metal or Suitable Substance or Material.
Said invention and improvement is shown on the drawings hereunto annexed and forming part of this specification.
Figure l is a front view of the button. Fig. 2 is a back View. Fig. 3 is a sectional view lengthwise of the button when said button is open. Fig. 4 is a sectional view lengthwise of the button when closed or secured.
The mode of construction of said button as follows, viz: A plate or plates of metal or other suitable substance A A forming the front of the button is constructed of the form shown in the drawing or such other form as may be desired so that on the back thereof is a place for the hinge or clasp hereinafter mentioned. On the back of said plate and near the edge thereof is set a hinge B projecting at right angles from the back of the button; one oint or more of the said hinge being connected with and secured to a cylindrical bar extending across the back of the button. Said cylindrical bar C C is as aforesaid securedto and connected with the hinge B upon one end in such manner that when closed as hereinafter described the bar will be parallel to the back surface of the button and form a straight line across it at the back of the button and on the edge thereof opposite the hinge B as above described is a small pin D projecting from the back surface of the button, the end of said pin D is cut away at an angle so as to form an edge or point.
At a distance below the point of the pin D equal to two-thirds of the diameter of the cylindrical bar O C aforesaid is cut a notch E", the upper surface of which is at right angles with the pin D, the underside to be sloped.
The bar C O above mentioned is as before stated a hollow cylinder, on the inner side thereof and immediately opposite to the pin D above mentioned is a circular opening F sufliciently large to admit the pin D. In the end of said cylindrical bar C O is fitted a shorter cylinder J, H which projects beyond and out of the end of the cylinder C C, said inner cylinder J, H, has upon its projecting end I-I a solid head. In this inner or interior cylinder is cut an opening corresponding and similar to that already described in the cylinder C C and marked with the letter F as aforesaid.
IVithin the larger cylinder C C is a spring M M so adjusted as to press upon the J end of the inner cylinder J H so as to keep the end thereof H projecting beyond the outer cylinder C C a. distance equal to the diameter of the aforesaid pin D the said distance being regulated and adjusted by a slot in the exterior and a pin in the interior cylinder the opening in the inner cylinder being so disposed that when the said cylinder is acted upon by the above described spring the opening in the outer cylinder will become partially covered or closed and when the inner cylinder is pressed inward the two openings exactly coincide.
The mode of fastening said button is as follows: In the sleeve to be secured are made eyelet or button holes sufficient in size to admit the passage through them of the cylindrical bar C C as aforesaid. Said bar (the hinge being opened) is passed through the two eyelet or buttonholes going under the opposite edges of the sleeve, the button or front plate being outside, and then said bar is closed upon said back surface of the button; the pin D entering the opening or slot F presses the inner cylinder inward until the head of the pin being entirely within the cylinder is released by the notch E and by the spring M M is thrown or pressed outward. The edge resting in the notch E as aforesaid the bar is rmly secured by pressing upon the H end of the inner cylinder and then opening the bar upon the hinge it is readily disengaged and the button can then be removed from the sleeve by withdrawing the bar from the holes. The form given to -the front plate or plates may be Varied as may be desired, the novelty of the invention consisting in the mode of fastening the sleeve by passing the bar above described through the holes instead of having two buttons connected by a link or chain. The front plate may be so shaped as to represent a single button or a pair connected together as shown in the drawing hereto annexed; the button not having to pass through a buttonhole may be decorated or ornamented to any extent by chasing, engraving, enameling, figures in relief, set with stone or in any other mode without in any manner interfel-ing with the convenience or utility of the article. The bar may be hinged and secured in a Variety of modes.
What I claim as my invention, and desire 5 to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The construction of a sleeve button secured by a bar eiixed thereto et one end by a joint or hinge, passing through holes in the sleeve, and being secured or fastened at the end opposite to the affixed end in the 10 manner in the drawings set forth and herein above described.
