The present invention relates to the manufacture of wrapped boxes and more particularly to the type having a hinged cover or lid. An object of the invention is to manufacture a box of this type with fewer operations. Another object of the invention is to provide an improved manner of attaching the lid or cover.

To these and other ends, he invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described: the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

In the illustrated embodiment of the invention it is shown as applied to the manufacture of cigar boxes. The box body 1 and 35 the lid 2 are formed separately. The box body is wrapped in any suitable manner as by a single piece wrap 3 which covers the outer faces of the box body and may also have extensions passing about the upper edges- 49 of the side walls and downwardly on the inner faces to line the latter, as shown in Fig. 5.

The lid 2 may be of any suitable material as paper board or wood. The hinging means is attached to the lid while it is separate from the box body and preferably before wrapping the outside face of the lid. In this instance, two strips 4: and 5 of textile material or tough paper are adhesively secured respectively to the inner and outer faces of the lid adjacent the rear edge thereof so as'to project beyond the rear edge, the strip 5 being adhesively secured to the rear edge and both strips being adhesively secured together from the lower corner of the rear edge so as to provide a projecting hinging piece.

The lid or cover 2 isnow provided with an outside wrapper 6 which has flaps or extensions 7 turned about the front and side edges and onto and adhesively secured to the inner face of the lid-or cover. An extension 8 is provided at the rear edge of the lid wrap and this extension is adhesively secured to the rear edge of the lid and extends onto and is adhesively secured to one side of the hing ing strip. The latter being thin will fold closely on the inner face of the lid and the covering thereof by the extension 8 may be effected during the operation of wrapping the-lid bya wrapping machine such as is now in common use."

After the wrapping of the outer face of the lid, the hingingpiece is secured to the upper edge of the rear wall of the box by nails' 9 or otherfastening means so that, when the lid is swung to closed position, the. hinging piece will lie between the lid and the upper edge of the rear wall of the box body. A liner or label 10-may be adhesively secured to the inner face of the lid and may have an extension 11 which passes over and is adhesively secured. to the hinging strip, its lower portion extending onto and being adhesively secured to the inner face of the rear wallof the box body.

When the box is closed, the rear wall and lid have substantially the same appearance as the front wall adjacentthe lid. The lid and the box body may be wrapped on the outside by wrapping machines now in common use. .The hinging'strip is thin so that the front and the rear wall of the'box may be made of substantially the same height while the hinging strip lies between the lid and the rear wall of the box body. The hinging strip may be made of textile material or kraft paper, giving a durable structure. The operations of. making the box are reduced as compared with prior methods of manufacturing covered boxes with hinged lids. 10o

The form of hinge herein shown has greater flexibility and does not have any strain thereon produced by the label as is the case when a hinging strip is secured to the outer 5 face of the cover and the outer face of the rear wall. I

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In combination with a box body, a lid, a

m hinging piece formed by two strips adhesively secured to the outer and inner face of the lid adjacent the hinging edge,-both strips having overlapping projecting portions secured to the upper edge of the rear wall of 15 the box body and lying between the upper edge of the rear wall and the under face of the lid while the latter is in closed position.

2. In combination with a box body, a lid, a hinging piece formed by two strips ad- 2o hesively secured to the outer and inner face of the lid adjacent the hinging edge, both strips having overlapping projecting portions secured to the upper edge of the rear wall of the box body and lying between the upper edge of the rear wall and the under face of the lid while the latter is in closed position, and a wrap for the outer face of the lid having an extension passing over the rear edge of the lid and on the under face of the hinging piece.

In combination with a box body, a lid, a hinging piece attached to the lid and secured to the upper edge of the rear wall of the box, and a wrap for the outside face of 15 the lid having an extension passing over the rear edge of the lid and secured to that face of the hinging piece that is opposed to the upper surface of the rear wall of the box body.

The combination with a box body having an outside wrap with portions extending over the upper surface of the rear wall and down on the inner face of such wall, of a lid having a hinging piece thereon secured to the upper edge of the rear wall between the lid and the rear wall, and a cover for the outer face of the lid having a portion covering the rear edge of the lid and extending between the upper edge of the rear wall and 59 the under side of the hinging piece.

'5. The combination with a box lid of a hinging piece comprising strips adhesively secured respectively to the inner and outer faces of the lid adjacent the hinging edge thereof and having overlapping portions projecting beyond said hinging edge and adhesively secured together, for attachment as a unit to the box body.
