This invention relates to an improved clip, primarily intended for use in fastening business papers, etc., together, but available for use 'in a wide variety of situations. i
:The main object of this invention is to produce a convenient, effective and capacious clip, having provision for the display of advertisingl matter, etc., and constructed with particular reference to reliability and low cost for manufacture.
With the above andyother objects in view as will appear from the following,'my in'- vention consists ina clip made of resilient sheet metal and consisting of a face-plate having an integrall resilientshank originating at the'edge thereof and vbent reversely to 'extend' behind the same; and an integral gripping-arm originating at another point upon the edge of the said face-plate and bent reversely there'from to extend between the: same and the said 'shank and co-operating with the latter to provide yielding gripping-means.
z My invention further consists in aV clip characterized as above and having certain other details of construction as will be hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims. l i
In theaccompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 isa view in front elevation of one form which a clip embodying my invention mayassume; T
' Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof;
, Fig. 3 `is a view thereof in Vertical central section taken on the line 8-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a corresponding view but showing the clip applied to aV relatively-thick piece of fabric; r
' Fig. 5 is a face view of a partly-formed Vblank from Vwhich the clip shown in` Vthe `preceding figuresis made; and
Fig. 6 Visan edge view thereof. The particular Aclip chosen herein for'the lillustration of `my invention consists of a face-plate V10, preferably'circul'ar and of concavo-convex form, as' shown, and designed to have directly imprinted upon Vits front face such advertising or other matter as may be desired, orif'prefer'red, a secondary plate of celluloid or other suitable material may bear the advertising matter and in turn be secured to the face-plate in accordance with the well-known practice in the art,
Connected to the upper edge of the faceplate 10, by means of a bowed'reach 11, and extending downward behind the same, is an integral fiexible shank 12, the lower end of which extends as shown well below the lower eclge of the said face-plate. The shank 12, just referred to, has struck forwardly from its longitudinal center an integral grippingfinger 13 having its upper end 14 bowed rearwardly to prevent the Cutting of the papers or other material when the clip is removed therefrom. z The gripping-finger 13 of the shank 12 is adapted to lie between and to act in conjunctionV with a pair of 'complementary spacedapart gripping- fingers 15 and 16 to yieldingly grip the object upon which the clip may be mounted. The said gripping- fingers 15 and 16 have their respective ` upper ends 17 and 18 bowed forwardly and constitute the bi- Vfurcated upper end of a resilient grippingarm19 bent upwardly from the lower edge of the face-plate 10 and extending between the rear face of the same and the front face of the shank 12.
The lower end of the gripping-arm 19 is sharply' bent reversely-and slopes 'slightly forward, .as shown, to provide a guide-lip 20 to facilitate the entry; of the 'article upon which it is desired to mount the clip between the'rear face of the gripping-arm 19 and the forward face of the shank 12; t
As shown in Fig. 4, the clip is applied to the edge of a piece of fabric 21 and it will be noted that the latter is gripped between 'the forward face of the gripping-finger 13 of the shank 12 and the rear faces of the complementary spaced-apart gripping- fingers 17 and 18 of the gripping-arm 19, so as to be i slightly defiected into the space`` between the two latter fingers to increase the grip. The fabric 21 is also gripped betweenthe'forward face of the shank 12' and the rear face of the said ripping-arm 19 near the lower edge thereo adjacent the guide-lip 20, al-
ready referred to.
. By forming the shank 12 and the grippingfioo arm 19 integral with the face-plate 1G and folding them from diflierent points upon the edge of the said plate so as to bring them into co-operative relationship for gripping an article, the resultant clip is not only more effective and durable, but it enables the said face-plate 10` to be left imperforateso that, if desired, advertising matter, etc., may be applied Vthereto,byprinting or by decalco-l mania, etc., or bylapplying celluloid or a' thin plate over the face thereof in accordance with the well-known practice in the art to which my invention relates. Furthermore,
the resiliency obtained byitherel'atively-,long
the same and the said shank and (zo-Operating withl the' latterl to provide yielding grippingmeans, the said-arm being 'pinched upon itself at such bend to form a forwardly-inclined guide-lip and finger-piece. w
