H. Sv ALLISON EXAMINING TABLE LEG REST Original Filed April 30. 1927 w WM 50 21 QU- N W W Patented Sept. 15,. 1931 UNITED-STATES PATENT ()FFICIE HARRY S. ALLISON, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR T W. D. ALLISGN COM- PANY, 0F INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, A CORPORATION 3F INDIANA IEXAIMIN'ING TABLE LEG Original applicationfiled April 30, 1927, Serial No. 185,132. Divided and this application filed February 24, 1930. Serial 110.430,?88.
This invention is a division from my application for patent filed April 30, 1927, Serial N 0. 185,132, and relates to an adjustable leg restcadapted to be employed in conjunction with examining tables and the like.
'An' object of the invention resides in the provision of a mechanism providing for the rocking of a foot rest attached tothe leg rest from an angular position with the leg rest to a position in substantially the same plane therewith and extended therefrom automatically' upon swinging the leg rest toward a horizontal position.
Other objects reside in the particular method of mounting the leg rest and in the mechanism permitting the maintenance 0 the leg rest at selective positions.
These and other objects will become apparent in the following description of the inven-- 1 tionas illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which.
Fig. 1 is aside elevation of an end of a table with my invention appliedthereto; and
Fig. 2, a vertical section on the .line 2-2 in Fig. 1; I V I 'Like characters of reference indicate like parts in the two views in the drawings.
To the end of a table 10,1 hingedly attach aleg rest 11 by means of the hinge brackets 12 and 13 secured in spaced apart relation along the under or back side of the rest 11 so that the rest may normally hang downward and be swung around to a horizontal plane.
A' foot rest 14 ishingejd to the leg rest 11' at its lower end, and a pair of arms 15 and 16 extend rearwardly from the under SlflG' of the foot' rest to have their rear ends pivotally engage the lower ends of the bars 17 and 18 which, in turn, are pivotally secured by their upper ends to the table at points spaced below the hinge brackets 12 and 13. The spacing of the pivoted upper ends of the bars and the length of the arms and 16 are made such that, upon swinging the leg rest 11 out away from its vertical depending position toward'the horizontal position, thebars 17 and 18 will pull on the arms 15 and 16 to rock the foot rest 14 around to extend from the leg rest and approach a position in the same plane with the leg rest.
Now, to hold the leg rest 11 out from the table at the horizontal or intermediate positions as may be desired, I rockably attach the rack bars 19 and 20 by their upper ends to the table end on the same pins 21 and 22 as.
hold the bars 17 and 18 and pass the rack bars down slidingly through the brackets 23 and 24 which are secured to the back side of the leg rest at points spaced downwardly from the upper hinged end. These rack bars 19 and 20 have their lower ends curved rearwardly and are notched on their forward sides to provide a plurality of projecting teeth 25. The two brackets 23 and 24, being in the same horizontal plane, support thereacross therock shaft 26 which is provided with convenient handles 27 and 28 on its ends to project along the sides of the leg rest 11. The rock shaft 26 carries the pawls 29 and 30 over each bracket 23 and 24 and in front of the respective rack bars 19 and 20 to engage against the lower faces of 'the teeth 25. Preferably, springs 31 bear against the for- Ward sides of the pawls to hold them yield- 1 ingly against the rack bars.
When the leg rest 11 is swung away from the vertical position, the rack bars 19 and 20 slip through the brackets 23 and 24 and the pawls 29 and 30 pressing thereagainst drop consecutively behind each of the teeth as may travel therepast until the leg rest is released whereupon the pawls, contacting the teeth, prevent downward and backward swing of the rest 11 until the pawls are rocked out of engagement with the teeth by rocking either handle 27 or 28 as may be convenient. c
The hinge brackets 12 and 13 are preferably hinged on plates 32 which carry the pins 21 and 22 so that the leg-rest and its attendant parts may be assembled as a unit before attaching to the table.
I claim:
1; The combination with a table, of a leg rest hinged to the table, a foot rest hinged to the leg rest, an arm fixed to the foot rest and extending toward the table, a bar pivotally attached to the arm and to the table, a rack bar hinged by its upper end to the table and slidably attached to the leg rest and otherwise unattached, a pawl automatically engaging the rackbar to maintain the leg rest at selective positions andmanually operated'means for releasing the bar from the pawl.
2. The combination with a table of a leg rest hinged to the table, a foot rest hinged to the leg rest, an arm fixed to the foot rest, a bar pivotally attached to the arm and to the table,
a rack bar hinged at its upper end to the table and having its lower end curved away from the leg rest and having teeth on its edge I toward the leg rest, a bracket on theleg rest having an opening through which the curved end of the rack bar passes, a pawl normally contacting the bar in the path of the teeth,
and means for manually disengaging the pawl from the bar teeth. I
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
HARRY s. ALLISON.
