' FIGURE TOY Fiied July 27, 1928 z'sheet -sneet 2 gnmntoi Patented Aug. 18, 1931 UNETED STATES WILLIAM H. MORLEY, OF MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE FIGURE TOY Application filed July 27,
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in toys, and particularly to figure toys.
One object of the invention is to provide a figure toy, wherein the head is .arranged to rock sidewise, and is mounted for rearward swinging movement, upon being hit with a missle, such as a ball. 7
Another object is to provide a device of this character wherein the figure is provided with pivoted arms, and wherein said arms are adapted to be elevated upon the head being swung backward.
Another object resides in the provision of a device of this character which is adapted to be applied to sign-boards, for purpose of advertising.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a figure toy made in accordance with the present'invention, and embodying one form of the invention.
Figure 2 is a rear elevation of the same; Figure 3 is a side elevation of the same. Figure 4 is a rear elevation of a portion of a figure toy showing a modified form of head moving means, and means for moving the arms.
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional detail view on the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a front elevation of the connected portions of the members 16 and 18.
Figure 7 is a rear elevation of a further modification of the device wherein mechanical means are provided for rocking the head sidewise.
Figure 8 is a sideelevation of the same partly in section.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, and particularly to Figures 1, 2, and 3, 10 represents the body of the figure toy, which may be made of wood, metal, cardboard, or other suitable material, which has the forwardly and rearwardly extending supporting feet 11. Secured to the rear face of the body is the block 12, which has the upper 1928. Serial No. 295,745.
end kerfed, as at 13, to receive the lower end of the upwardly extending leaf spring 14. Suitable fastening means, such as the bolts 15, are disposed through the block and spring whereby to hold the end of the spring rigidly within the'kerf of the block. The upper end of the spring is secured, in a manner similar to the lower end, in the lower end of a block 16, and secured to the upper end of the said block 16 is one portion of a spring hinge 17. The other portion of the hinge 17 is secured to the neck portion of the head 18, of the figure, said head rising above the upper end of the body, and being adapted to rock sidewise by virtue of the flexibility of the leaf spring 1 1. In the forward face of the upper end of the block 16 are the two eyes 19,and in the lower end of the head, intermeoliate eyes 19, is a single eye 20. Pivotally mounted on the rear face of the body, at the shoulders thereof, are the normally depending arm members 21, and connected at its opposite ends to the pivotal portions of said arm members is a cord 22, the intermediate portion of which passes through the eyes 19 and 20. Thisarrangement permits the head to rock from side to side, without moving the arms, as the cord playsloosely through the eyes, but when the head is swung back, on the spring hinge '17, the eye 20 is moved upwardly, exerting a pulling action on the intermediate portion of the cord 22, with the result that the arm members will be swung upwardly and laterallyfrom the body. 7 In the modification shown in Figures 4 and 5, the block 23'is pivotally mounted on the back of the body '24., and depending from the block-is the weighted arm 25. The upper end ofthe block is connected with the head 26, by a spring hinge 27, similar to the hinge 17 Carried by the rear face of the head is a plate 28 having a laterally extending headed lug 29, said lug being disposed in the opening 30, of the upper end of the link 31. The lower end of the link is provided with an opening 32 in which plays the intermediate portion of the arm connecting cord 33. The head rocks sidewise in the manner of the first form, except that the pendulum arm 25 urges this movement. Upon the head being swung backward on its spring hinge 27, the link 31 will push downwardly on the cord, causing the arms 34 to swing upwardly, at the sides of the figure.
In the modification shown in Figures 7 and 8, the head 39 is connected to the body by means of the blocks 40 and 41,.and the leaf spring 42. To the rear of the head there is secured a plate 43, of the same construction as the before-mentioned plate 28, and engaged with the lug 4%, of said plate, is the apertured upper end of the link 45, the lower end of which is provided with a longitudinal slot 46, receiving the pin 47 carried by the disk as, and which disk is centrally pivoted on the back of the body of the figure. Any suitable means may be employed for rotating the disk as, whereby to cause the rocking of the head, sidewise. When the head is struck from the front, and is caused to swing backwardly, on its spring hinge 27, the link will be moved downwardly by reason of its connection with the head. In the intermediate portion of the link 45 there is formed an opening 49, through which passes a cord 50, connecting the arm members 51, of the figure.
In the forms shown in Figure l, a fin 52 may be attached to the rear of the head, against which the wind is adapted to strike to cause the head to swing sidewise.
What is claimed is:
1. A figure toy comprising a body, a head mounted on the body for lateral vibration with respect to the body, arm members mounted on the body, hinged connectionsbetween the head and the mounting thereof whereby to permit forward and rearward movement of the head, and connections be tween the said head and arm members whereby to cause said arm members to swing upwardly upon rearward swinging movement of the head. a
2. A figure toy comprising a body, a block mounted on the body for lateral rocking movement, a head hinged to the. block for forward and rearward movement, arm members on the body, anda flexible element'connecting the arm members and loosely engaged with the head whereby to cause the arm members, to swing upwardly upon rearward hinging movement of said head.
8. A figure toycompr-ising a body, a block mounted on the body for lateral movement, a head member, a spring hinge connecting the head member with the block, arm members pivotally carried by the body, a flexible element connecting the arm members and loosely engaged with the head member for upward swinging movement of said arm members upon rearward swlnging movement of the head member, andan arm movably connected with the head member and engagedwith said flexible element.
4:. A figure toy comprlsmg a body, a laterally vibrating head member connected with the body, means between the head and the body connections for permitting the head member to swing backwardly and forwardly, arm members pivotally supported on the body, a link movably connected with the head member, a cord connecting the arm members and engaged with said head, and means on the head and engaged with said link for causing the head to vibrate.
5. A figuretoy comprising a body, a block mounted on the body for lateral vibratory movement, a head member mounted on the block for forward and rearward vibratory movement, arm members on the body for upward and downward swinging movement, a link loosely carried by the head member and movable therewith, a cord connecting the arm members and engaged with the link whereby to produce unitary swinging movement of said arm members upon rearward and forward movements of the head memher, and means engaged with the link for causing the lateral vibratory movement of said head member.
6. A figure toy comprising a body, a head, a laterally vibratable element carried by the body, and connections between the head and the said element for permitting said head to vibrate forwardly and rearwardly independently of the vibratable element, said head being arranged to vibrate laterally with said vibratable element.
7. A. figure toy comprising a body, a head, a flexible element carried by the body for lateral vibration, spring means carried by the said element for forward and rearward vibration independently of said element, said head being mounted on said spring means,
and arm members mounted on said body and having connections with the spring member whereby to swing upon vibration of said element and said spring means.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
