Clearly, extra gears in the gear driven roll as compared with the gearless drive, give added o ortunities for repairs and other recognize disadvantages including the stoppage of the machine for the re airs to the gear drive.
The main obJects of the present invention are to avoid this and other recognized difficulties met with in the gear driven roll.

In the gear driven construction, in general use, the blocks or heads for supporting the ends of the suction box are both carried by frames, brackets or other supports, entirely exterior to the shell. In the gearless drive of this invention that` is not possible at the driven or drive end of the shell, as will be evident.
The inner ordrive end 44 of the shell hasl having an inner race 8a positioned on said `head and an outer race 9a positioned on said ring. A set of rollerV or other anti-friction bearings 9 are disposed between said races. Both said ring 45 and the head 3 are suitably formed to provide seats 46 and 47 for said races.
At the opposite oi' frontend 10a, the suction box is supported entirely exterior of the shell 41. The usual elbow connection 60 is provided for the reduced end of the suction box. It ma be made detachable in any of the usual an well known ways, as by a notched'collar, ange and co-operating eye bolts, or the like.
At the drive end 44 a disc or circular head ro'vided as the driving connection. Said disc has a peripheral flange whichis securely fixed to the ang'e of ring 45 in any suitable and well known manner. From the 4center of the disc extends the indrive shaft 26 which may be driven direct from a motor or any usual driving machinery (not shown). It is obvious, likewise, that it may be driven indirectly through a clutch or similar connection. At a point nearthe disc or driving head 24 the shaft 26 is. journaled in suitable A antifriction bearings 27 positioned in the standard 28. The -member or element which immediatel connects the shell to the drive shaft has n shown and described as a flanged disc or plate 24 and as fixed to the shell. Clearly, this disc may be cut away to ractically any desired extent as until only a ork of two opposite arms remains, the free ends of these arms being secured to the ring in the same manner as stated for the disc flange. Of course, any other number of arms may similarly be provided. The disc construction described is a strong, eiicient, c ompact, economicalform and one readily and quickly made. In some cases, especially with small diameter rolls'it may be referable to have a detachable instead of a ed connection. T his may be done in many ways' as by of which is seated on a relatively wide.

It is the intention, of course, to include in this application and to cover by the appended claims both the fixed and detachable connections'.
A readily accessible deckle ad 'ustment ini. dicated generally by the numera 30a is proj vided at the fr ont end 10a of the machine and is made as compact as practicable to adapt it to the least possible space.' In the preferred form two separate and independent shafts 30 and 31 are employed, each shaft being threaded into and through a deckle block or lliead 31a. Said heads 31a are longitudinally slidable between the side walls of the suc` or any other suitable means 32 for operatingV E the same. Said shafts are oppositely threaded to cause the deckle blocks 31a to travel in-` wardly from the shell ends toward the center.
